lehigh university brown and white vol 7f - no 41 ethlehem pa tuesday april 1968 866-0331 environmental plan withheld by neal arluck francis j wuest head of the environment study committee and chair man of the psychology department announced friday that the committee will not present a plan of action to president w oeming lewis this semester instead the environmental study will be presented this summer at the annual conference of the danforth foundation in colorado springs each year 25 liberal arts schools are invited by the danforth foundation to present a problem which is then discussed by leading educators and social scientists from across the country lehlgh s team at the two-week confer ence will include w ross yates dean of the arts college john p vickrey assis tant professor of english robert g jones assistant professor of social relations and francis wuest wuest has invited dr lewis to attend part of the conference in any case the environmental study committee will report to lewis in the fall on what was learned at the conference v/uest said that by january a report must be made to the oanforth foundation explaining how the conference helped to solve or began to solve the problem which was presented although the committee's report to lewis did not place value judgments upon its findings wuest said the report would be used at the conference because a problem dots exist i can't define the boundaries but the university is simply not attuned to the present expectations of the student body other interpretations of the report have ranged from urgent concern to cool cautiousness according to robert jones who headed the studies upon which the committee's report was based in a complex social system like lehigh's many decisions at many points will have to be made to alter the present environment and give lehlgh a more vital and involved atmosphere at a high level we have to agree that we have a real problem it's largely a of here tend to arcadia plans study of values what are the values of american life if these values can be defined how real a part do they play in our lives as members of our society these questions wiii be discussed at the forthcoming student-faculty c olloquium " the american dream . the experimental venture backed by arcadia will be held wednesday evening april 24 according to the chairman michael h shapiro 70 the evening will provider a unique out-of-classroom educational experience . . which is regarded by some to be lacking at the university the program will include dinner a brief introduction and a general dis cussion which will be led by several faculty members students who plan to participate are asked to sign up at the student activities desk on or before monday april 15 king memorial set tomorrow an lnterfaith memorial service for the late dr martin luther king will be held in packer memorial church at stls pun tomorrow the public is invited to attend later wednesday james farmer former executive director of the congress of racial equality core is scheduled to speak at grace hall at b:ii p.m a professor of social welfare at lincoln university farmer's appear ance is being sponsored by the lehlgh forum for visiting lecturers and the interfraternity council lecture committee in ims he helped form the first chapter of core at the university of chicago this group was intended to adopt the techniques of passive resistance used by ghandi of india currently teaching course at new york university on the civil rights revolution farmer will speak at the university on the civil rights revo lution whose problem is it 7 dr king's memorial service will be co-sponsored by the bethlehem branch of the national association for the advancement of colored people naacp greater bethlehem area council of churches community civic league of bethlehem and two student groups at the university the lnterfaith council and the civil rights or ganlmtton besides the rt rev fredrick j warnecke bishop of the bethlehem episcopal diocese who will speak at the service rev francis j sullivan chaplain to roman catholic students at the university and rev raymond e fuajmu university chaplain win also be among the several area religious leaders present other religious leaders taking part in the service will be rabbi max wasssr of brith sholm synagogue rev edwin h prey executive secretary of the greater bethlehem area council of churches and rev jerry hargrove pastor of the second baptist church here ib the wake of king's murder jack bannon 68 former president of mcciintin-marshall distributed black armbands from a desk in the lobby in the university center during most of friday bannon said that ha gave oat about 150 armbands which was a lot more then i expected he was aided by heal meglathery 69 and tony taylor 69 b * w photo by mccaffrey jack bannon 68 hands out black armbands for mourners of the death of dr martm luther king bannon also contacted dean preston parr and requested that the flag on the university flagpole be lowered to half mast last friday gold water to speak at u barry m goldwater 1964 republican nominee for president and former united states senator from arisona will speak at the university monday evening april 15 at 8:19 p.m in grace hall the lecture sponsored by the residence halls council will be entitled the world today 1 and will be followed by a question and answer period goldwater elected to the senate in 1953 was the ranking republican on the labor and public welfare committee and a member of the armed services committee and its prepared ness subcommittee born in phoenix he attended arizona public schools and staunton military academy in va bat was forced to leave doe to the death of his father at the age of 27 he became manager of bis family department store a veteran of world war 11 goldwater is now a major general in the usaf reserve ret his political career began after the war when he was elected to the city council of phoenix in 1949 on a reform ticket in 1962 he defeated the senate majority leader in what was termed an upset decision he was re-elected in 1958 goldwater has also served as chairman of the republican senatorial campaign committee he is the author of three books the latest of which is where i sumt hu column concerning politics is carried by 100 newspapers doors will open at 7:30 p.m and admission
