director of admissions have taken important positions re cently in the solicitation program of the community chest campaign kirkpatrick is head of the schools sub-division in the drive smiley is head of the lehigh uni versity sub-division under that of kirkpatrick by gilbert j barrenborg a shadowy figure slipped through the darkness wednesday night among the cars parked in front of drown hall campus cop harry glace approached the character stealthily and confronted him as he was opening a car door after a short exchange of words and a smiling so long the cop returned to drown hall and the mysterious person continued his car-opening all this was part of an investigation conducted by a reporter to de termine how many lehigh men value their cars in the past few weeks several cars have been broken into and stripped of all movable parts in addition two cars have been stolen of 87 cars found on the cam pus at 10:30 p m 28 were found unlocked or easily accessible to theft one might presume from these figures that 32 per cent of le high car-owners either don't value their cars or cannot spare a few minutes a day in protecting their interests faculty protects cars least oddly enough cars with no identification tags and evidently from off the campus were the best protected seven of these cars were locked securely only one be ing open faculty cars were least protected with seven locked and seven unlocked twenty out of 45 student cars were open officially nine faculty cars were locked but two of these were eas ily entered the owners of these cars carefully locked every average of all of these sections but one lehigh engineers averaged 16 points higher than the mean aver age in the biology exam the members of the curriculum of engineering physics averaged 506 for the highest curriculum score chem students were second with 502 mining engineers aver aged 488 tau beta pi national honorary engineering society was the high est ranking society its members compiled a score of 485 brown is high man high scores in the individual exams go to brown who captured four he scored 750 in mathemat ics 760 in physics 710 in chemistry and 650 in verbal facts hammond also scored 710 on the chemistry exam and a high score of 720 in biology weber was high man with 550 in literature and clark equal ed brown with 750 in the math division the purpose of the examination is fourfold 1 to enable a stu dent to judge his accomplishments at the end of his college course 2 to enable a student to com pare his general and special know ledge with that of students of other colleges 3 to give the graduate schools additional evidence as to the preparation of candidates for the graduate school 4 to give the colleges an opportunity to compare their work with that of the whole group kenneth e smiley director of admissions was elected vice-presi dent of the bethlehem rotary club thursday at the weekly meeting glen w harmeson is no longer head coach of football announcement of his withdrawal from the coaching post was made today and as a result extensive reorganization of lehigh's coaching and athletic department personnel is in the offing simultaneous with the announ cement of harmeson's change in status came official confirmation that freshmen will be permitted to compete on lehigh varsity teams next year freshman teams as such will be temporarily discon tinued during the war a num ber of junior varsity teams will be organized in the principal sports and champion intramural teams will compete with similar teams from other colleges seek new coach with lehigh now without a coach for the 1942 football team efforts are being made to line up a suitable candidate a committee to find a man has been appointed by president clement c williams it hoban are for mer lehigh football players and are now well-known football offi cials no indication has been given of the further organization of le high's athletic department after harmeson resigns as the athletic personnel an overall physical fitness program to meet the needs of the war conditions although freshman varsity eligi bility will eliminate the yearling schedules and j v sports will be comje much more important it is planned to continue intercolle giate athletics in a modified form to follow existing schedules so fax as practicable contact sports will be emphasized and summer games comprising chiefly tennis baseball and swimming will be arranged the faculty has already reduced the number of football games per year from nine to eight in announcing the overall phy sical fitness program lehigh's ans wer to current emphasis on per sonal development president will iams states lehigh university will modify its athletics in keeping with the needs revealed by the war emergency and will develop so far as available resources will permit a comprehensive physical fitness program with which sports and normal physical education will be integrated the program will be aimed at robustness endurance and quick reactions it will involve student living habits recreation athletic activity health preservation and a psychologic will to strength and agility the natural youthful comje much more important it is planned to continue intercolle giate athletics in a modified form to follow existing schedules so fax as practicable contact sports will be emphasized and summer games comprising chiefly tennis baseball and swimming will be arranged the faculty has already reduced the number of football games per year from nine to eight in announcing the overall phy sical fitness program lehigh's ans wer to current emphasis on per sonal development president will iams states lehigh university will modify its athletics in keeping with the needs revealed by the war emergency and will develop so far as available resources will permit a comprehensive physical fitness program with which sports and normal physical education will be integrated the program will be aimed at robustness endurance and quick reactions it will involve student living habits recreation athletic activity health preservation and a psychologic will to strength and agility the natural youthful ideal of manly strength which charac terized earlier american life and which has been displaced too much by an attitude of lackadaisical in dolence in college students will again be given the
