by marty marasco the lehigh valley student government association lvsga was founded in the late 1950*s to promote lnterschool relationships among the students of the colleges and universities located in the lehigh valley last month the organization was dissolved the organization's demise has gone unnoticed its accomplishments forgotten and the possibilities of such an organization foregone yet lvsga did exist and serve the students of the lehigh valley for over eight years what it was why it was and why it failed can only be answered in retrospect however if these questions are not asked the hope of the organization's revival or the start of a similar organization must also be foregone along with lehigh the o£her area schools that were associated with lvsgatw^re cedar crest lafayette moravian and muhlenberg the organization was formed primarily to sponsor the summer flights to europe during the first years of its existence the flights were the only services performed later the possibilities of expanding the organization were explored and in 1963 a jazz-folk festival was sponsored the festival presented in grace hall featured nina slmone the hervie mann sextet steve depass and the modern folk quartet the concert but were too few was termed successful and was well attended after this first success common problems and solutions that had worked at the other schools were discussed among the five student government presidents at the monthly meetings in 1964 the member schools decided to incorporate the organization primarily to further accommodate the needs of the charter flights in december of that year the act of incorporation was signed and approved by northampton county the charter states as the purpose of the organization to provide a forum in order to promote inter school relation ships among the students of the 10 colleges and universities located in the lehigh valley to collect ideas for the solution of common problems and to stimulate student government as an active force on the college campus that charter and the constitution adopted under it were never ratified by all five of the area schools both cedar crest and lafayette objected to several provisions in the constitution the administration at the two schools and at moravian were opposed to certain provisions in ths constitution that might be interpreted as meaning the groups activities had administrative sanction from all the member schools despite the failure of three of the schools to ratify tha constitution the organization was reorganised and restructured after its incorporation the schools that had failed to ratify the constitution continued to parti cipate as if they were members the members of lvsga included the student government presidents and one additional member from each school in the 1966-67 academic year the organization decided to sponsor a lecture series the first in the series held at muhlenberg college was a debate between timothy leary and dr donald louria the event held in december was very successful but ths remainder of the series never developed the debate itself was sponsored by only four of the area schools lafayette's administration did not permit its student government to participate the leary-lourta debate was the last event sponsored by the group other than tha annual charter flights to europe it was after the debate that the member school began questioning why the organisation had not been successful believing that the group was worthwhile an attempt at reform was mads in the spring of 1907 throughout ths history of ths organisation only lehigh students had served as president almost all ths organi zational work had been done here it was decided that if the responsibility was shifted to another school maybe the bleak future of the organisation would change for the better the newly elected president was chosen from muhlen berg and the responsibility for organizing meetings fell into the hands of students there however this past fall the meetings of the organiza tion became further apart and wars not wall attended further controversy over the summer flights to europe developed then at the end
