foundation which win make possible the appearance of abba eban at the university this fall has sponsored many noted speakers in the series the single annual expenditure of 5,000 is one of the largest single grants of its kind in the united states the gift provides funds for lecturers through the year 1974 the previous three lecturers have been sir denis borogan of england in 1965 gen maxwell 0 taylor in 1966 and paul henri speak of belgium last year dr blausteln benefactor of the series is president and a member of the board of directors of the american trading and production corp in 1910 he and his father the late louis blausteln founded the american oil co he is also president and director of several other industrial corporations he was recently appointed by president johnson to serve as a commissioner on the commission on marine science engineering and resources he has also served his nation of missions to the un and many foreign countries st the request of the past five ujs presidents blausteln is a trustee of many organiza tions and has received numerous awards and decorations he holds seven honorary doctorates he attended the university as a member of the class of 1913 and faculty members speaking at the monthly meeting of omicron delta kappa the national leader ship honorary lewis discussed the university s tentative development objectives for its second century and later answered student questions about the value of fraternities approval of a coffee house in the basement of the chapel and the relationship between students and the board of trustees in formulating the university's objectives which are still subject to final revision lewis emphasized the need to decide what we want to develop into he quoted asa packer's original aim to give young people a sound basis for successful living lewis outlined the considerations in deciding to seek expansion of the graduate school " ' til recently he said " lehigh has been primarily an undergraduate institution in the last decade however we have begun to face a lot of com petition for the human resources of the university we have had to try harder to get the faculty we want in particular there is the competition of industry for engineering faculty industry can offer inducements that a university can't we can no longer teach engineering out of a handbook like they did 50 years ago the whole task of running a university is more complex than it was in the pest lewis pointed to iwo main reasons for expansion of the graduate school — to attract top faculty members and to provide more spaces for undergraduates who wish to pursue their education for these reasons it was decided to triple the number of doctorates and double the number of students in the graduate school we don't talk so much about the graduate school because we think it is more important than the undergraduate school asserted lewis but because that's where we're weak and must improve it will be the aim of the graduate school to develop peaks of excellence rather than across t he-board improvements and to try to increase the selectivity of graduate students lewis emphasized the necessity of discovering the needs of society and government so as to attract research grants on the undergraduate level the university's objectives are to maintain a balanced undergraduate program recognizing the importance of a broad based education while the number of students in the graduate school will be doubled the undergraduate enrollment will be maintained at its present level so that an eventual ratio 02 two under graduates to one graduate student will be attained lewis explained the reason for deciding warren report ridiculous by marty marasco " the warren commission report is really ridiculous at this point concluded joslah thompson during a lecture last night before an overflowing crowd in packard lab auditorium dr thompson author of " six seconds in dallas and a philosophy professor at haverford college claims that not one but three assassins were involved in the shooting november 22 1963 in dealey plaza dallas in his lecture last night thompson summarized his book and repeated most of the inf or mation published last december in an exerpt from that book appearing in " the saturday evening post with the use of supporting films and slides the author attempted to prove . that the
