the civilian defense of the city of bethlehem and the base of their operations is the cellar of the building in which the state liquor store is located the service consists of playing cards or doing homework there the sacrifice lies in the fact that this has to be from six to ten o'clock in the morning colonel coyle head of the beth lehem branch of the office of civ ilian defense had issued a call for volunteers to man the four phones in the office which is located in said cellar volunteers for the more convenient times of the day were easily secured however the phones have to be manned 24 hours a day a special appeal to le high netted the 16 volunteers some of these are merely kept as a reserve force while the rest will work once a week from six to ten in the morning although if necessary they will be released for classes to take emergency calls in case of a real situation it is the duty of these men to take em ergency calls and to communicate them to the proper services thus it is evident that seniors are being sought more eagerly this year by business and industry morgan said that the number of ' interviews to date has been very large and that representatives of 62 found articles that are collected in drown hall the auction will take place about april 20 the fencing team submitted a petition for funds but the matter was tabled until the results of the inter-collegiate fencing matches that are to be held at lehigh this week-end by edgar a frankley tis a great service they are doing for their country tis a great sacrifice they are making yes lehigh now has 16 men enrolled in the civilian defense of the city of bethlehem and the base of their operations is the cellar of the building in which the state liquor store is located the service consists of playing cards or doing homework there the sacrifice lies in the fact that this has to be from six to ten o'clock in the morning colonel coyle head of the beth lehem branch of the office of civ ilian defense had issued a call for volunteers to man the four phones in the office which is located in said cellar volunteers for the more convenient times of the day were easily secured however the phones have to be manned 24 hours a day a special appeal to le high netted the 16 volunteers some of these are merely kept as a reserve force while the rest will work once a week from six to ten in the morning although if necessary they will be released for classes to take emergency calls in case of a real situation it is the duty of these men to take em ergency calls and to communicate them to of the possible five these two students were the only ones to turn in a complete set of answers c alfonso fernandez arts spl of chile and isodoro r benavides e.e 45 of cuba spoke at a social meeting of the cosmopolitan club last tuesday evening fernandez described the atrocities of the spanish civil war which he wit nessed as a student he left spain on a british destroyer after being there for more than r a year of fighting cuba was the topic of bena vides talk he stated that cuba is predominately agricultural and that the united states plays a large part in cuban economics but that the cubans are proud of their independence by john f hannan with nearly 42 years of service with the university howard eck feldt professor of mining engineering intends to retire at the end of the present semester professor eckfeldt came to lehigh as a student in 1891 and enrolled in the curriculum of metallurgy during his student days he was a member of alpha tau omega social fraternity tau beta pi honorary engineering society scabbard and blade honorary military so ciety and omicron delta kappa honorary activities society he graduated in june 1895 and re turned the following year to con tinue studies in mining engineer ing surveyed in mexico soon young eckfeldt accept ed a position as mining engineer and surveyor with the mazapil copper company ltd concep cion del oro mexico in august 1896 he traveled to the mexican mining country to assume his new duties and for the rest of the year he was engaged in surveying mines in august 1898 eckfeldt re turned to the mines from a two month lobby of packard auditorium for sub-freshman day jessie p farley for 17 years a secretary in the director of ad missions office died saturday mor ning in st lukes hospital she was graduated from the bethlehem schools and was 30 years old at the time of her death she died of a complication of diseases and is survived by her husband and family at the present time a total of 186 seniors or about 52 of the class has accepted positions effective upon graduation in june e robins morgan director of placement announced this week this number compares with 177 on the same date last year 87 in 1940 41 in 1939 thus it is evident that seniors are being sought more eagerly this year by business and industry morgan said that the number of ' interviews to date has been very large and that representatives of 62 companies have been to le high the explanation of the rush for college seniors morgan says lies in the improved business con ditions now prevailing he further stated that all hiring is not due entirely to the larger defense in dustries since non-defense firms are getting the jump by selecting men in many instances before they are taken by first-line defense industries some companies do not bar sen iors subject to the draft declared the placement director many firms are willing to take a chance and offer guarantees of furloughs some do not even inquire about the students
