groups have taken further steps to reach an equitable solution to rush ing difficulties encountered this year during tuesday's rushing commission meeting representatives of the residence halls council interfraternity council the gryphons and arcadia presented specific proposals for a ru.shlng system harvey york 67 arcadia president said he was very impressed with the co operation among the groups more contact with the freshmen during the fall semester and increased informal rush ing were the major points ln the proposals the commission will take the ideas pre sented at the meeting to its respective groups for consideration before the next session on march 22 ifc representative james d young 66 said wednesday that ifc's rushing plan was to have three days of contacting in the fall and the present two-week contacting period in the spring concerning the addition of rhc and gryphon opinions to rushing policy he said that at the preliminary stage ifc's plan allowed a few days of joint contacting open house periods for rhc and the gry phona would be limited to the seven hours used by ifc he said hut otherwise they would be free in rushing under the plan rhc wants to allow more open houses during the first semester and allow fresh man to attend upperclass parties upon in vitation said hhc president james tlefen brunn 66 he said he wanted to limit contacting to the two-week period as another new-comer to rushing pro cedure the gryphons proposed to increase the amount of rushing in the fall and to have four to six open houses rather than the present two russell feroe jr 67 said feroe said he wanted more days of silence and restricted contacting in the two-week contacing period to allow fresh man more time tocatchuplnthelr studies he also wanted rushing dinners for gryphons and parties at which freshman would be allowed with such a move he said there would be no such thing as dirty rushing concern for freshman problems is arcadia's main concern according to york he said that he first proposed to limit contacting to the two-week eriod hut after all parties advocated fall rushing he said he was agreeable top trio to perform the ramsey lewis trio will highlight ifc weekend with a two-hour concert at 8:30 p.m on saturday march 19 a queen will reign over sat urday's activities which feature a t>ed race and beard contest a dance which was to have followed the members may be on the verge of expanding according to secre tary james r oyler 67 oyler in a proposal scheduled for discussion at wednesday's arcadia meeting noted the wide disparity which presently exists between the increasingly heavy work load and the number of men available to do lt the fact that 11 members now exist to act as chairmen of 13 committees was cited by oyler as an example of arcadia's fail ure to grow in numbers commen surate with its new responsibil ities in the past year alone four new ad hoc committees have been set up to supplement the original eight standing com mittees arcadia originally consisted of fifteen members which were elected at large the system was changed in the early fifties to include seven members elected at large and eight appointed by various activities groups two years ago arcadia increased to include 16 members with nine elected at large and seven appointed under the current system two appointees come from the fresh man class cabinet and one each from the sophomore class cab inet the junior class cabinet ifc rhc and the town council oyler's proposals if adopted would permit a second represent ative from ifc and rhc fresh man and town council repre sentation would not be altered to preserve fair proportioning this system would leave arcadia with nine elected and nine ap pointed members oyler did not rule out the possibility of expanded at-large elections but emphasized the difficulty that already exists in voting for the most competent man when voters have - only minimal knowledge of a cand idate's qualifications a field of 30-35 candidates would be re quired if more members were to be elected the arcadia secretary doubted the merit of making further ap pointments from the sophomore and junior class cabinets as has been proposed rhc and ifc members generally handle problems of more recent nature and oyler saw them as more widely representative than the cabinets once passed by arcadia the oyler proposals would be put on a student referendum freshmen freshman car permits for ifc weekend will be distributed from 5 to 7 p.m monday through thursday in room 203 of the university center id cards and automobile license numbers will be necessary
