today by tau beta pi vol xlix — no 42 albert w foster 42 and don ald r diggs 45 are the two first prize winners in the williams ex tempore speaking contest foster won the senior junior contest and diggs was best among the fresh man competitors lehigh will select a miss vic tory to reign over spring house party festivities and will award her a 25 defense bond from dates attending the jun ior prom friday april 10 one will be chosen who idealizes the spirit of the weekend during the first half of the dance the five members of the prom committee will circulate among the dancers each one will select four girls to compete in the final judging which will be held during intermission at present it has not been decided whether the queen will be chosen by applause or by a group of judges corsages not in favor wearing of corsages is definitely frowned upon by the prom com mittee and it is asked that flow ers not be worn this measure has been taken in an attempt to lower the cost of the dance jimmie gorham and his band have been picked to play on the gym floor of grace hall while bob chester and his featured name band will entertain on the drill floor above gorham is not new to lehigh students since he played at the mannerchor tea dance during fall houseparty he also performed at the delta upsilon dance saturday night of that weekend art works shown at lamberton hall continued on page four twenty-two fraternities have decided to remain open during the summer semesters a survey made last night revealed no fraternity has definitely decided against staying open while seven have not yet made any definite plans approximately 10 or 15 men in each house will take the summer course the survey showed in order to cut down on expenses many of the houses will provide sleeping and studying quarters but not meals in some cases two fratern ities have decided to join forces alpha tau omega will have 12 men living in their house while about 18 men will stay at the beta theta pi house the chi phi house will be open for 7 or 8 of their men and about 15 phi gam ma delta men will use that house during the summer two groups which will combine are chi psi and delta upsilon whose members will live at the delta upsilon house the delta phi house will stay open for sleep ing and studying but it is not certain whether the delta phi's will eat at the house or not about 8 men will stay for the summer delta sigrs to stay home the delta sigma phi fraternity will stay at its house but will not eat meals there since about half 3f the delta tau delta men will participate in the speed up the house will be open however the dtds might have to combine with another house to lower expenses kappa alpha will stay open with about 14 men attending the sum mer 1938 presented with out costumes or scenery this ven ture proved successful and the fac ulty group accordingly organized a chorus and split from the facul ty dramatic club in 1939 ruddigore by gilbert and sullivan was presented com plete with scenery costumes and other accessories gilbert and sullivan are ap parently well liked by the chorus because patience another of their operettas was chosen for 1940 the sorcerer was presented in 1941 it is less known than other musical dramas by gilbert and sullivan but was well received this year for the first time there will be two performances of the operetta so that more money can be made for united states china relief abandon mikado the mikado by gilbert and sullivan was to be presented this year but the idea was abandoned in december because of years both here and in europe a book on chaucer's clerke's tale has been published by j burke severs professor of english seeking the original manuscripts of the patient griselda tale pro fessor severs visited the major libraries of western europe in prep aration for this scholarly work entitled the literary relationships of chaucer's clerke's tale the work was published jointly bj the yale university press and the modern language association professor severs first became in terested in the subject while tak ing a post-graduate course in chaucer under the guidance oj professor young of 1938 presented with out costumes or scenery this ven ture proved successful and the fac ulty group accordingly organized a chorus and split from the facul ty dramatic club in 1939 ruddigore by gilbert and sullivan was presented com plete with scenery costumes and other accessories gilbert and sullivan are ap parently well liked by the chorus because patience another of their operettas was chosen for 1940 the sorcerer was presented in 1941 it is less known than other musical dramas by gilbert and sullivan but was well received this year for the first time there will be two performances of the years both here and in europe a book on chaucer's clerke's tale has been published by j burke severs professor of english seeking the original manuscripts of the patient griselda tale pro fessor severs visited the major libraries of western europe in prep aration for this scholarly work entitled the literary relationships of chaucer's clerke's tale the work was published jointly bj the yale university press and the modern language association professor severs first became in terested in the subject while tak ing a post-graduate course in chaucer under the guidance oj professor young of yale to whom the book is dedicated professoi severs wrote a thesis on chaucer's sources for the clerke's tale and submitted it in candidacy foi a doctor's degree the story of patient griselda waj
