the brown and white bethlehem pennsylvania lehigh university sis ml-4181 vol 97 - no 4 tuesday september 17 ims lu review to cater to conservatives greeks bydaveleight news editor a new campus newspaper the lehigh review is being planned by former young americans for freedom officers according to john burgoyne former yaf president the first issue is targeted for late october burgoyne said they hope to get at least one more issue out this semester eventually becoming a weekly newspaper the newspaper is in response to what burgoyne and fellow conservatives believe is an anti-fraternity sen timent in the brown and white most of the time the brown and white does a good job he com mented but we think there's plenty of room for other people's ideas on campus although the interfraternity council has expressed interest lehigh review isn't going to be just a greek paper he stated but one where what the average lehigh student feels is ex pressed arlene falkowski last spring's yaf treasurer echoed burgoyne's concern that the brown and white editorial board is more liberal in proportion to the campus as a whole i felt that sometimes the views of the average lehigh student aren't expressed that accurately in the brown and white this is a very conservative cam pus burgoyne said and the brown and white is not a very conservative paper he said that although officers of the conservative yaf are running the lehigh review opportunities to present a variety of opinions will be , available the paper will also include sports cartoons and other features we're not just a political paper burgoyne stated he said it will be just a little more greek a little more conservative with all four yaf officers running the paper falkowski said editorials will be from a conservative viewpoint and we're not hiding that yaf a campus conservative political organization was started in the spring of last year and became very active before november's presidential election yaf itself will not be active this semester burgoyne said instead the lehigh group will join students for america a group with almost the same beliefs as yaf but with better national organization the lehigh group took the idea for a newspaper from a yaf seminar burgoyne and other officers attended last year although they didn't learn how to run a newspaper they obtained a manual on how to start one burgoyne said they have also enlisted the aid of karen schoonover a former b w news editor schoonover said she would be working on layouts and doing the editing for the paper she mentioned that at an early meeting of the review officers she got the impression they knew little about how to edit or put the paper together both burgoyne and falkowski admit they have no experience writing for a newspaper and co-officer karen mcmenamin wrote for the brown and white for only a short . time last semester dravo resident slashes dorm with chainsaw bylizcarr news editor a freshman male was led away from ' his residence hall in handcuffs by campus police friday after he damaged five doors with a chainsaw and spray painted the inside of his dravo b-5 dormitory room friday afternoon according to dean of students john smeaton no decision has been made on legal or disciplinary action against the student we are currently engaged in following things up and determining what actions should be taken smeaton said the incident occurred around 1 p.m after the student purchased a chainsaw at a local hardware store and returned with it to his dravo hall according to campus police several doors the ceiling and a window were damaged the student also cut a tree outside several of his hallmates claimed the word death was carved on the student's room door police said that pi lam's 84 greek week sanction over bysaramarder according to a pi lambda phi fraternity officer the no-alcohol sanction levied against the house last year didn't teach us anything we deserved punishment social chairman william neff said but the punishment itself did not teach us anything it was merely a rebuke pi lam's punishment for several violations of the university code of conduct during 1984's greek week included the unprecedented stipulation that no alcohol be served at the house or at any pi lam function for one academic year as far as changing the brothers views about alcohol consumption neff called the punishment ineffective we knew that we screwed up when we screwed up but going for a year without alcohol didn't teach us anything as a method of prevention however the punishment did serve interception in the third quarter of saturday's action at taylor stadium the engineer won their opening gam of the season 49-41 humphrey to seek employment in biotech field by liz v arc a desk editor it was the spring of 1981 and the lehigh community was plagued with a variety of serious incidents including gang rapes hill crawls student riots and blatant theft by fraternities when arthur humphrey accepted the post of university vice president and provost humphrey's first project for the university he explained in a recent interview was to compose a student code of conduct with the help of former dean of students william quay the code is now written into the student handbook and has since been modified only slightly by the forum humphrey came to lehigh from the university of pennsylvania where he was dean of biochemical engineering with his primary goal to strengthen both academic and research programs at lehigh the duties of a provost he said are very extensive he supervises and directs all educational programs and personnel approves all appointments to the instructional staff and controls all funds budgeted for instructional purposes reporting to him are the deans of the four colleges and the graduate school the vice president for research and the vice president for student affairs in general he said he has the broad responsibility to make sure the academic life of the university is in good shape and good order " humphrey has been a university administrator for 25 years and throughout the entire time he has maintained an active role in see
