lehigh has agreed to purchase a major portion of bethlehem steel corp.'s homer laboratories doubling the size of the campus and creating major new research space the agreement in principle was reached aug 21 after months of negotiations with the steel company lehigh's board of trustees approved the purchase of five of the eight buildings on the 72-acre tract comprising 62 percent of the nearly 600,000 square feet of space at the top of south mountain lehigh also will purchase 670 acres around the facility which will connect the main campus to the murray h goodman athletic fields in saucon valley the university will increase its 860 acres to 1,602 acres according to university president peter likins lehigh and bethlehem steel will an nounce a final agreement of sale by the end of this year until then neither organization will release the price of the facility although lehigh associate treasurer richard sanders said they have a working price in mind local newspapers have quoted vice president and treasurer john woltjen as saying it will cost the university more than 40 million to pur chase and operate the facility for five years lehigh has received 10 million from pennsylvania's 1986-87 capital fund but total payments may not be made until the middle of next year payment and terms of the sale have not been finalized likins said he added that lehigh currently does not have the cash for the purchase we are going to pay for this by raising money he said stressing that the university would not spend the endowment or increase tuition tax-exempt borrowing is one possibility he commented and gradually paying off the steel's bill is another either way the administration will look mainly to private individuals foundations and corporations for major donations toward the cost rather than make a blanket fundraising effort of all alumni conversations toward this end have already begun likins said although collections have not fundraising objectives are many however and pepper said the trial definitely will be postponed probably until october because nobody's ready to present their case pepper would not comment on the methods of the prosecution but he did say that the case was proceeding normally he also added that the death penalty will be sought * henry 21 was arrested for the april 5 murder of clery from bryn mawr pa in her stoughton house dormitory room located in the lower centennials he allegedly raped the coed and then strangled her with a slinky toy an autopsy conducted the next day revealed that clery had indeed died of strangulation as well as other external and internal wounds a preliminary hearing for henry was held on may 20 before northampton county district justice john gombosi following the hearing gombosi ruled that the commonwealth represented by pepper and district at torney donald corriere had presented sufficient evidence to hold henry for trial on charges of homicide rape robbery involuntary deviant sexual intercourse aggravated assault indecent assault burglary theft and receiving stolen property henry has pleaded not guilty he is currently being defended by philadelphia attorneys gregory sleet and j michael farrell they could not be reached for comment henry has been held without bail in the northampton county prison since his arrest on monday april 7 because there is no bail permitted in a capital case the university of wisconsin and brown university he also took a semester leave to the university college of wales aberystwyth and was a visiting professor at manchester university in england for a year sanchez has an extensive background in mathematical research specifically in existence theorems in calculus of variations and control theory ordinary differential equations and the existence of periodic solutions for nonlinear dif ferential equations he has written several books on see sanchez page 7 wanted to find which was a very fine small private university with an ex ceptional faculty a real concern for students and their training and a real drive for excellence b&w in your opinion is lehigh as technically advanced as you would expect a modern private institution to be for example as regards our new networking system sanchez lehigh is the leader in that area the networking is a new idea to me though i understand a number of other schools have it it's an exciting concept my responsibility with it will be to develop uses of it for the students and faculty in education and research such as developing software and adapting classrooms i don't expect it to be perfect for about two years with any new system you have to debug it and get people who've never used computers used to it b&w are there any other areas in which you would like to see change or improvement sanchez there is a whole series of proposals called the barry report saw photo bv lauren baraibky new provost david sanchez written by government professor donald barry two or three years ago it serves as a plan for developing the arts humanities and social sciences there are some proposals in that report that have a definite world flavor health and human development artist in residence management of technology i would like to weld them together into a cohesive plan involving these topics and has published articles in numerous publications in english and spanish both of which he speaks fluently without the trace of an accent sanchez describes himself as being spontaneous but that is the only mention this modest man made in reference to his own personality leaning back on his sofa pipe in hand he comes across as open and honest considering carefully before replying but occasionally giggling at his own remarks brown & white how does your mathematical expertise apply to your work as university provost sanchez it doesn't if you are an active dedicated researcher you un derstand how a similar faculty works in their teaching their research you have to know how they think and being from similar backgrounds you can understand their dedication and how important their work is to them b&w what impressions did you own of lehigh before being offered the position of provost and
