conversations i had with individuals throughout this process and the unbelievable number of letters from all kinds of folks i guess my decision is the basis now of what i think makes most sense for lehigh university in 1986 the vice president believes the outcome in this much-followed issue is the correct one i don't believe that it would have been a disastrous decision to say we will provide scholarships for wrestlers i think it's a better decision obviously not to do that i'm not sure that providing wrestling scholarships in and of itself is an issue that's going to keep us on the map in wrestling both likins and duncan searched see likins page 4 the faculty committee and the student life visiting committee all came out against scholarships above need the intercollegiate athletic committee the alumni committee and the forum committee voted the other way duncan then had the deciding vote before writing her recommendation to the president during the study the wrestling department was given the right to offer scholarships in excess of need to freshman recruits i do support the recommendation that we return to exclusive reliance on need-based financial aid likins said i've taken this position out of respect for the opinions of many colleagues the decision duncan said was partly based on all the hundreds of it is my recommendation that lehigh's choice should be to retain the tradition of financial aid based on need i make this recommendation with the full knowledge that our wrestling tradition as we have known it will change the report dated sept 2 1986 also neighboring lehigh university john strohmeyer crisis in bethlehem the relationship between lehigh university and bethlehem steel has been advantageous to both organizations since the steel company's inception while the university's technological atmosphere encouraged study in steel-related fields promoting the growth of what was to become the number-two steel producer in the nation the company reciprocated by developing a series of programs to aid university growth this mutually beneficial relationship has been altered by the decline of the steel industry bethlehem steel with yearly profits topping 100 million in its heyday during the 19505 spent the time between 1982 and 1985 miring in the red to the tune of 1 9 billion consequently the days are gone when a lehigh trustee who headed the buildings and grounds committee and was an employee of the steel company could hire three people on bethlehem steel's general services payroll to work primarily on the university programs maintained by the steel company to benefit higher education which constitute 40 to 50 percent of corporate beneficence have been cut back or suspended in the last few years however jim kostecky director of corporate support programs at bethlehem steel said that the company is continuing to fulfill obligations made in the past one program that has been affected by bethlehem steel's difficulties is the loop course a management program for new graduates hired by the company bethlehem steel would give participants alma mater 6,000 if a private institution and 2,750 if a public one if the employee remained with the company after two years more than 200 lehigh graduates have participated in the program since its inception in 1953 the loop program was suspended two years ago supplemental grants which are donations toward capital improvements have also been halted until business conditions improve according to kostecky bethlehem steel has contributed to every one of lehigh s major building campaigns through these grants the matching-gift program in which bethlehem steel contributed dollar-for-dollar what any employee gave the university independently between 25 and 5,000 has also been suspended see steelpage 3 lehigh university conferred baccalaureate and advanced degrees upon 100 lehigh valley residents at the 108th annual founder's day exercises oct 12 they were among the 223 students who completed degree requirements over the summer the traditional ceremonies were in packer memorial church dr roland schmitt senior vice president and chief scientist at general electric co delivered the principal address he received the honorary degree of doctor of laws these are unequivocally the best times for science and technology in out nation and the world schmitt said in speaking of the role of universities in american business and in ternational markets other honorary degrees were awarded to walter burke president of the sherman fairchild foundation who received the doctor of laws degree and herbert imbt a lehigh alumnus and chairman of the board of herbert r imbt inc of state college center county doctor of engineering the university's new provost dr david sanchez presented the candidates for honorary degrees president peter likins presided and awarded degrees to the candidates candidates for bachelor's degrees were presented by dr john hunt dean of the college of arts and science dr richard barsness dean of the college of business and economics and dr donald bolle dean of the college of engineering and physical sciences dr jerry king dean of the graduate school presented candidates for the advanced degrees the rev hubert flesher university chaplain gave the invocation and asked the benediction music was provided by guest organist greg funfgeld who is
