clear and concise a picture as possible to the american aud ience not generally known but actually a fact was the lack of censorship of all material sent out of germany to the american press of course traveling research engineer of the westinghouse electric and manufacturing company as part of his lecture on recent developments in scientific research to a capacity crowd of 700 students and townspeople last night in packard auditorium dr thomas who gave the first lecture of this type at lehigh several years ago also demonstrated and lectured on sea drome markers sodium and mercury vapor lamps and invisible rings of air shot from a metal drum which was tapped by a hammer miniature whirlwinds were shot from guns which dr thomas claims may be the fore-runners of powerful devices to eliminate in dustrial smoke the invisible rings of air blew out candles and rang gongs ten feet away as the back of the gun or metal drum was tapped by a hammer the speaker mentioned that scientists are al ready considering the possibility of using more powerful vortex rings to blow giant puffs of fac tory smoke high into the atmos phere thus providing clean air in industrial cities extinguishes fires the robot device which utilizes an electric eye was used by the speaker to extinguish several gas oline fires ignited on a metal screen the head of the device moved slowly back and forth and up and down in front of the screen when the eye came to the fire it stopped and suddenly an automatic stream of water squirted out to extinguish it turning to things which research has already made practical for peacetime living dr thomas showed a floating light that has greatly modernized night-time landing on harbors known as sea drome markers the new lights are placed in rows on the water to indicate safe landing lanes these markers which can be controlled by radio are run on dry batteries and supported on doughnut-shap ed rubber floats blue light shows red illustrating how scientific re search is finding new lights from metals dr thomas turned on a lamp which shone with a pale blue light but made his face a bright orange-red color the light which came from a glowing vapor of cadmium inside the tube sent out a strong concealed red ray which showed up by reflection on the face of the speaker according to dr thomas no practical use has yet been found for this lamp but very useful lights have been produced from other metals the sodium lamp is widely used to illuminate bridges and highways with soft yellow light this lamp produces more light than ordinary incandescent continued
