military group to choose 10 electric eye extinguishes fire a weird looking robot device which utilizes on electric eye to find and put ont fire will be among the late scientific developments to be demonstrated thursday evening at 8 p m in packard auditorium by dr phillips thomas of the westinghouse research laboratories the head of the device moves slowly back and forth and up and down pointing the device at various parts of the screen when the eye comes to fire it stops and an automatic stream of water squirts out to extinguish it thomas lecture is free to all interested students and townspeople and is popularly designed to appeal to both technical and non-technical men it is sponsored by the student branch aiee we're in the army now cry more than 29 lehigh men who have joined the u s armed forces during the present emergency a recent telephone poll disclosed the fact that at least that number have left school in the last three months for military service many more men who enlisted before december or are unaccount able for since they lived in town are doing their share toward the country's defense however each of these 29 men representing al most 2 per cent of the school was sitting in class rooms only two or three months ago now they are working for uncle sam the army men represent 14 fra ternities and seven dormitory sec tions alpha chi rho is the only fraternity to have three men de finitely on active duty several houses claim three and more men who are waiting for commissions or planning to enlist at the end of the semester four of the men have injured he was ruptured while on active duty in newport news va kelley a former heavyweight wrestler is still hospitalized the 29 men who are in active service are listed below by living group the held heretofore bower predicts that the junior banquet will be a financial success this is based on reports from dor mitories and fraternities indicating a large attendance of the class the seniors had 194 paid dinners to hear magoun and incurred an official loss of 70.75 while 116 sophomores gathered last week left an unofficial deficit of only 14.00 last year all four class gatherings were financially suc cessful thursday is deadline ticket sales will close thursday noon bower announced town students will be able to get tickets before the closing date at the sup ply bureau or at the arcadia office the guest speaker c brooks peters 34 is now in washington covering the far eastern theatre of war for the new york times while at lehigh peters was active in the lehigh review which at april 24 at the university of pittsburgh will take place at 4:30 p m thursday in room 303 christmas saucon hall j calvin callaghan assistant professor of english who is man aging the lehigh contest with cole s brembeck instructor in english announced that the contest is open to all lehigh students if there are any students who cannot register on thursday they will still be able to do so at noon on friday and saturday in room 316 christmas saucon hall but instructions will be given only on thursday callaghan said that he and brembeck will attempt to integrate the speech contest with the lehigh williams prize contest callaghan stated that the contest will be di vided into two parts with the williams competition as a prere quisite to the post war peace contest the first part of the speech con test will be connected to the wil liams contest in extempore speak ing and will be managed by cal laghan the general theme of the discussions will be how to main tain peace in our post-war world and a list of topics will be posted this week in christmas saucon hall the student will be assigned one of the posted topics at noon on the day of the contest wednesday march 18 and will speak at 7:30 p m on the same day there will be three distinct groups junior-senior with prizes of 75 50 25 sophomore with no prizes freshman with prizes of 50 and 25 from this preliminary elimina tion contest the final contestants will be selected in each group to compete in a contest on wednes day april 8 when a representa tive group from lehigh will be chosen to travel to pittsburgh to represent the university in the state contest the theme of the extempore speeches on april 8 will again be post-war peace and the student will select his own topic and write out his speech the contestant must however extemporize his speech from his manuscript and memorization will not be allowed the winner of this elimination will represent the uni versity at the pennsylvania inter collegiate post-war peace speech contest at the university of pitts burgh on april 24 the three man uscripts of the three winners will the position of business man ager of the freshman handbook is open for sophomore competition this job carries a 20 salary plus 75 percent of the handbook profits a 75 sale of advertisements will make the competitor a mem ber of the business staff and carry with it a 10 percent commission on his work only six men reported for the first meeting of the candidates and tomorrow's meeting will be the last chance for new men all can didates will start together as no advertisement kept well preserved in billy's re markably active mind from 1895 to the first world war billy acted as general train during the post war period le high this together with his job of being the sole campus patrol man on sundays made a man-sized jcb during this post war period le high had only a small grass plot for an athletic field with billy engineering the project a handful of men with harrows and persever ance constructed the track and baseball diamond which still ex ist today after a brief interval billy again returned to the rout ine work of campus activities when billy sheridan started to coach the wrestling teams which were destined to bring widespread fame for lehigh billy was on the spot ready to take over the trainer's position he acted as trainer for every sport on the cam arcadia approved the election system at 7:30 p.m last night in drown hall as voted on by the combined councils at its meeting last week technical questions of the system are to be arranged by the nominated by that committee to petition for places or the ballots previous system the system used in the last two elections provided for nominations by a student-faculty committee with announcement of societies lehigh's h-3 scabbard and blade company and h-7 from laf ayette were inspected by lt r.c b]asingame national society 3rd corps area inspector at a special joint meeting of the two societies last night captain pierce assistant pro fessor of military science and tac tics spoke to the group on what every young officer should know both scabbard and blade societies were commended by lt blasingame for the turnout to the special meeting lehigh officers were complimented on their fair and competitive method of select ing members to their honorary society continued on page four tone musical society recently approved a request by middlebury college in vermont to use its name in founding a similar musical or ganization at that institution , the new society at middlebury college will be modeled directly after the lehigh society a loose but mutual benefiting affiliation be tween the two groups will exist exchange of interesting lectures concert suggestions evaluation of club projects and original com positions will prove valuable par ticularly on the long-time basis the relationship will require no restrictions on club activities nor will it incur any financial obliga tions it will be essentially on hon orary union of two clubs with fun damentally the same ideals state society aims the purpose and aims of tone are two first to furnish interested students with an projects and original com positions will prove valuable par ticularly on the long-time basis the relationship will require no restrictions on club activities nor will it incur any financial obliga
