will be tried this february authorities in the northampton county government center said monday prosecuters will seek the death penalty should a jury convict henry of first-degree murder he has been charged with first-degree murder rape and other crimes in connection with the death of freshman jeanne ann clery april 5 in a hearing monday northampton county judge michael franciosa permitted the trial to be delayed until february in order to avoid conflicts with the examination schedules of the many lehigh students who will be called to testify franciosa responding to concerns voiced by the attorneys representing henry noted several motions still pending in his decision to delay the trial both sides agreed during monday's hearing to the sequestration of jurors for the duration of the trial and to allow attorneys representing both sides to question jurors during the selection process individually and in a location isolated from other potential jurors franciosa cleared the way for the jury to consider handing down the death penalty in this case by denying a request by the defense to bar it defense attorney j michael farrell ex plained that he will introduce evidence to show that in pennsylvania the death penalty has been disproportionately applied against blacks in cases where the victim was white the district attorney's office countered farrelfs contention stating that there is no state law which blocks the use of the death penalty in cases because of alleged racial bias on the part of properly selected juries district attorney donald corriere has indicated that the commonwealth will seek the death penalty if henry is convicted of first-degree murder franciosa ruled that counsel may use unlimited challenges to remove from the list of prospective jurors all those kissiah said one major goal of lafayette security is to see that the field is in fact available for playing he said and that the game is not interrupted lafayette police will contract 25 or 30 easton police of ficers to provide security for before during and after the game according to lafayette chief of police hugh harris we anticipate that students from both schools will disprespect the security he said our desire is to keep people off the field until the end of the game the easton police department will also supply large guard dogs to help keep students off the field as in previous years when the game is over harris said they will allow people on the field to get the goalposts but again he stressed the lu plans activities for parents by teresa kent and nancy scherer brown and while news writers more than 2,500 people are expected to participate in activities during upperclass parents weekend tonight through sunday affairs planned include a chamber music concert sports events the lehigh university choir's annual concert and other activities specifically designed to acquaint parents with life at lehigh weekend events commence tonight with a special chamber music concert presented by professional musicians at 8 p.m in lamberton hall tomorrow academic life on campus will be presented with the meet the faculty coffee hour 9:30-ll a.m in the uc asa packer room on the murray h goodman campus the varsity soccer game between lehigh and lafayette will begin at 11 a.m a buffet-style luncheon will be held at grace hall 1 1:30 a.m to 12:45 p.m tickets can be obtained at the door following the luncheon the varsity football game between lehigh and west chester university will begin at 1 p.m in taylor stadium guest tickets cost 8 saturday evening the lehigh university choir will perform its annual fall concert with the brass ensemble at 8:15 p.m in packer memorial chapel according to david heist choir publicity manager the concert will feature a medley of songs from the 1890s arranged by steven sametz choir director the medley will be accompanied fraternities offer pre-bids by david esposito brown and while news writer lehigh fraternities are currently extending pre-bids to students voted in by house members this is part of the process referred to as rush which is now in full swing according to mike boyd coordinator of greek affairs most houses still have plenty of bids to give out according to paul troy in terfraternity council ifc rush chairman in general rush has been as good this year as last year in fact pre-bids are being accepted earlier this year on the hill boyd said numbers are not revealed until the actual housing contracts are signed by the rushees on bid day however rush is going as well as last year as far as we can tell hal blackman alpha epsilon pi fraternity rush chairman said alpha chi rho fraternity rush spokesman marc farina noted it rush seems pretty good we're doing okay there has been a wave of acceptances going around the hill it's the kind of thing where one guy accepts his bid and all his friends see that and start accepting their bids dave conca delta phi fraternity rush chairman said each house seems to have similar qualities that they look for in a rushee we look for someone who represents our principals and of whom we would be proud to have wearing our letters and representing us on campus delta tau delta fraternity rush chairman andy conway said brad mcgowan delta upsilon fraternity co-rush chairman looks for a good overall personality and whether he the rushee can be an asset to the house he said we have seen a greater variety of freshmen this year comparing this year's freshman class to last year's the quality is there but they seem more laid back and tend to party a lot less alpha tau omega rush chairman jeff bosland said in conway's opinion rush is a selling job because fraternities have to appeal to rushees the physical features of the house the unity of the brotherhood the pledge program and the reputation of the house are all important factors he said joe long rush chairman at lamda chi alpha fraternity said the rushees should feel wanted by the house and knowing that the house will appeal to them bill silverton a freshman living in mcclintic and marshall house who has been rushing five houses this semester said he looks for brothers he likes and would feel comfortable living with silverton said that some freshmen rush many houses for the prestige associated with receiving several bids jacob greene a freshman living in beardslee house commented that some guys rush houses just to get at tention and popularity each fraternity determines the amount of pre-bids they will distribute based on the number of departing seniors we would never give out more pre-bids than what would fit in alpha chi rho farina said although there is no set number of pre-bids offered most houses give between 14 and 20 farina said according to the rush handbook pre-bids are binding on the part of the fraternity in that the rushee is assured a formal offer of membership on ifc bid day the second saturday after winter break see henry page 4 see dogs
