formally approved arcadia's peti tion for houseparty as required by faculty action and received reports of several other investigating com mittees appointed last fall if arcadia approves the elections system approved by the council last night a two-year struggle to devise a method of selecting can didates for class offices will be ended the proposed plan follows the present system of secret nom ination by the combined student faculty committee but permits men who are not nominated by that committee to petition for places on the ballots the system used in the past two elections provided for nominations only by the student-faculty com mittee with announcement of can didates on the morning of election day approval of the combined plan oi elections followed a report of a committee which has been work ing for several months on the prob lem the report listed three possible systems which might be adopted these were 1 a free election under which nomination for office would be solely by secretary of the organization six lehigh faculty members are performing government defense work services one of these has been drafted another called to active duty and the other four are serving the various branches of the eov ernment in research work charles j moravec assistant university news editor was the first faculty member to be drafted he was inducted in july 1941 moravec served in the 40th training battalion at camp croft editing the first newspaper there he was later transferred to the military intelligence ' training company of the 26th spe cialist headquarters company bat talion where he organized another newspaper he was recently as signed to intelligence work in the puget sound area dr cledo brunetti assistant professor of electrical engineering was granted a leave of absence for the 1941-42 term to take a post with the national bureau of standards he is working as a radio physicist and en engaged in problems for the national defense research board dr brunetti was appointed research associate in the radio section of the bureau of standards in 1939 3 working for navy three faculty members prof cyril d jensen prof adelbert ford and prof benjamin l snav ely have been granted leaves of absence to work for the navy continued on page four see editorial on page two establishment of a student elections system embodying both the committee and petition plans for nominations of candidates was prac tically assured last night as the combined councils approved the pro posed system and passed it along to arcadia for final action fifty six members of the three living group governing bodies and arcadia assembled in drown hall for the combined group's second meeting of the college year in ad dition to approving the new elec tions system plan the councils formally approved arcadia's peti tion for houseparty as required by faculty action and received reports of several other investigating com mittees appointed last fall if arcadia approves the elections system approved by the council last night a two-year struggle to devise a method of selecting can didates for class offices will be ended the proposed plan follows the present system of secret nom ination by the combined student faculty committee but permits men who are not nominated by that committee to petition for places on the ballots the system used in the past two elections provided for nominations only by the student-faculty com mittee with announcement of can didates on the morning of election day approval of the combined plan oi elections followed a report of a committee which has been work ing for several months on the prob lem the report listed three possible systems which might be adopted these were 1 a free election under which nomination for office would be solely by petition 2 a party system which would oper ate similarly to the regular politi cal party plan 3 the combina tion committee and petition nomin ations the committee stated in the re port that it believed no plan would be perfect nor could eliminate the combines which the present system was supposed to eliminate the plans presented were the re sult of a poll of 15 colleges cam pus opinion and approved ar cadia's petition for spring house party approval by the combined councils was requested by dean congdon as a final measure of stu dent opinion on the houseparty question it was reported that the student committee investigating the six houseparty problems dealing with chaperonage housing of dates and general conduct set up by the dean for consideration last winter will meet with a rec commended that the present sys tem of rushing be continued his report stated that deferred rushing would not be possible because of lack of dormitory space to pro vide rooms for the freshmen who
