the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania 215)758-4181 v 01.98 n0.23 friday december 5 1986 ifc reinstates closed parties by david esposito brtiwn anil white lix ( lurtxftondrnt the interfraternity council ifc passed three amendments to the social policy at tuesday's meeting at phi gamma delta fraternity the amendments make it mandatory to check lehigh ids at all unlocked party entrances to designate three weekends of each semester as house party weekends and to require all new pledges social chairmen and house presidents to attend a bartending training program administered by the dean of students staff the amendments drafted by the executive board came not only as a result of increasing pressure by the lehigh administration which was discussed m the forum subcommittee's critical review of the social policy but also from remarks made by president peter likins at the last ifc meeting at the meeting likins expressed concern about the adequacy of the current social policy and suggested that forum's review of the social policy may strengthen it all three amendments are aimed at reducing a fraternity's legal liability insurance premiums are skyrocketing and some fraternities can no longer get coverage rob ripp ifc president said m a cover letter to the amendments an even more compelling reason for these amendments is the issue of criminal negligence ripp said the pennsylvania legislature is considering a bill allowing charges of criminal negligence to be brought against a person if he has knowledge of un derage drinking occurring m his house and does not stop it this law will make house presidents m particular liable for underage drinking at parties ripp said two of the amendments deal with outsiders non-lehigh students or people who are not invited guests of a more than 100 lehigh students joined the family of jeanne clery at a memorial service to dedicate a pavilion m her honor monday two lu students assaulted by glenn dolan hrown and while copy editor assailants still at large two female students were attacked on lehigh's campus by an unidentified assailant m separate incidents during the last two weeks acccording to lehigh university police chief eugene dax the assailant was described by both victims as a white male m his early 20s approximately 6 feet tall and of average weight and somewhat muscular build he was wearing a dark ski mask a sweat shirt and blue jeans at the time of the attacks dax said the first attack took place at 2 a.m nov 21 as a student was walking alone on grant street near grace hall the attacker forced his victim to the ground warning her to keep quiet the victim struggled scratching the attacker with her keys and forced the assailant to run off the second attack took place 11:30 p.m sunday and followed a similar scenario a female student walking alone m the upper centennial complex was knocked down and told to remain quiet by her assailant she struggled scratching him with her finger nails and he fled neither of the student victims were sexually assaulted dax said at 11 p.m on sunday a third lehigh student was accosted by a man matching the description of the masked attacker in this incident the man called to the student who was walking m the region of alpha epsilon pi fraternity and exposed himself however she entered the packer avenue fraternity house before he could approach her according to wednesday's morning call seven additional attacks were reported m bethlehem and one m allentown during november in each case the description of the attacker matched that of the man or men described m the campus incidents in two of the attacks the assailant threatened his victims with a knife and at least one incident involved a case of attempted rape dax commented that students should be aware of the problem i don't think they should panic but they should be con cerned he said more than 100 family friends remember clery by brian cooke browit and whilr aim nrw lilllot the jeanne clery memorial pavilion m the lower cen tennials residential complex was dedicated monday af ternoon c 1 c r y ' | parents and brothers president peter likins and about 100 lehigh students gathered m the lower centennials courtyard for the 20-minutc ceremony remembering the lehigh student found murdered m her stoughton house room last april this is a place for each of us to come alone — to con template m serenity this is also a place for all of us to come together — to congregate m peace likins said about the memorial a square open gazebo-structure with a pointed red roof the structure located between stoughton house and stevens house will be surrounded by flowers to be planted m the spring likins said other speakers were senior marc falato student chair man of forum xvii sophomore sarah bean clery's freshman roommate and sophomore susan kwon a freshman hallmate opening and closing prayers were said by university chaplain hubert flesher and the rev richard schware respectively and music was provided by the whole-tones a four-member group of the lehigh university choir falato and likins dedicated the memorial on behalf of pros and cons of finals schedule discussed by elizabeth varga brown and while news editor students who say lehigh's finals schedule is perfectly fair are m the minority the majority either qualify that statement naming changes they would like to see m the structure of the finals schedule or allege that the schedule is outright unfair for example it seems that the university schedules the engineering exams first so they get to go to vacation the earliest while arts just seems to be fitted m says jeff boujoukos a sophomore government major there are several reasons for that according to associate registrar fred ressler in constructing the exam schedule the registrar's office starts with what it knows and that means what is prescribed m the university catalog as required for each college program students m the college of arts and science may be enrolled m any number of courses says ressler and with such a great variety offered each semester to the entire college required classes tend to be relatively small compared to say economics 1 which is required for all freshmen m the college of business and economics another request students make is that the exam schedule be posted earlier it should be posted at least no later than the second week of classes because it helps you schedule things beforehand and helps you pick courses claims helina dlugon a graduate student m education and a lehigh residence-hall director there are disadvantages to that system ressler says students would be able to take only courses which have finals that do not conflict that's not a good reason not to take a course in the past we waited until the ninth or 10th week of instruction before scheduling finals to allow for students dropping courses however we decided that it was not worth that long a wait as a result now we do it soon after the 10th day of classes ressler explains this also allows students and faculty to plan ahead a sophomore electrical engineering major suggested that as much time be provided before fall semester finals start as there is before spring finals the review-consultation-study period rcs this fall is wednesday and thursday next spring rcs lasts from saturday may 2 until tuesday may 5 first of all the forum determines the number of days m the final exam period when and how long — usually 10 days says ressler therefore when students complain there are too many finals on consecutive days or say that space between exams would be nice as well as having no sunday finals and none at 7 p.m it must be pointed out that there are constraints set by ironically the student-faculty government — on how much the registrar can improve the situation it's a big decision to place these courses m so that you hope you can see attacks page 7 see memorial page 4 see finals page 6 see
