the nation the national science foundation selected lehigh last may to establish the center which will test structural systems such as skyscraper and off shore oil-rig components according to civil engineering professor john fisher the center's director fisher said renovations of building h and construction of a multidirec by brian cooke brown and while news editor the sale of a major portion of bethlehem steel corp.'s homer research laboratories property to lehigh was finalized dec 22 establishing what has been termed lehigh's hilltop campus according to john woltjen lehigh's treasurer and vice president for administration we now have the facility to bring together the talented people at lehigh who are working with industry and government to help american manufacturing and construction companies become more competitive internationally ' ' lehigh president peter likins said the purchase included 742 acres increasing the size of the campus from 860 to 1,602 acres and connecting the main campus with the murray h goodman campus the total price of the property was 18.75 million five of the eight buildings on the 72-acre research center were purchased providing lehigh with about 370,000 square feet of new floor space likins said the purchase will increase educational opportunities and enable the university to meet its long-term goal of doubling research activities the observation tower is part of the five buildings lehigh purchased in the homer labs acquisition the complex has been dubbed the hilltop campus this new era at lehigh means educational and research growth for the university and economic growth for the lehigh valley he said likins said the facility will enhance the ben franklin north east tier advanced technology center a state technological and business develop ment program centered regionally at lehigh according to woltjen the college of education will move into the facilities which will also be used for expansion of different lehigh research projects primary uses of the facilities will begin in the 1987-88 academic year he added lehigh purchased the homer labs administration building which features the center's observation tower overlooking the lehigh valley a raw material chemical engineering and refractories pilot plant will continue to house ben frankin center-supported companies lehigh will also continue to use a photographic services plant and warehouse and heating plant buildings the refractories pilot plant located in building h of the center will house the engineering research center for advanced scholar ships will continue for one more recruiting term the proposed 5-million 12,4(x)-seat stadium would be constructed in the soccer bowl on the murray h goodman campus by the fall of 19hk according to published reports the board has not yet authorized construction proceedings once the new stadium is constructed then demolition of taylor stadium at a cost of 1-1.5 million can proceed replacing it would be a business college building to open in 1 wo there are no definite plans for a performing arts center on the taylor lite we do not have sufficient funds to assure construction oi any of these projects but we have a good starl on the business college lehigh president peter i-ikins reportedly said he said the school has raised far less than half for the total needed for all three projects estimated at 30 million the board determined that alter the next wrestling season wrestlers will compete with other students for special grants winch will be awarded annually to undergraduates demonstrating ex cellence in academics and extra-curricular activities the grants will be awarded regardless of financial need football would not be one of the activities considered because teliigh is a member of the colonial league which follows a policy of need-based aid only currently with the exception of wrestling all financial aid awarded to lehigh student-athletes is based upon need i wo years ago an experimental program was instituted that offered limited scholarships for the wrestling program many alumni believe the only way lehigh can maintain its 7 c , year-old wrestling tradition is by granting athletic scholarships the program approved by the board triday is similar to one followed by lehigh in the 1970s and early 80s under the previous system as many as 10 entering freshmen received grants of 1,000 for excellence in academics and extra-curricular ac tivities the grants were renewed annually if the student main tained a 3.0 grade-point average see wrestling page 4 byericrothenberg brown anil while v.v editor the trial of former lehigh student josoph henry charged with the rape robbery and murder of freshman jeanne clery in her stoughton house dormitory room last april has been postponed until april originally scheduled to begin in october the trial was moved to february to avoid conflict with the final exams of students called to testify jury selection is now scheduled to begin in early april henry's attorney j farrell requested to have the trial date changed again indicating that defense experts will not be available for the february date and the defense needs more time to complete evaluations other developments regarding the henry case include the decision to use a jury from outside northampton county for the trial the issuance of a gag order a confession to the murder by henry to a cellmate and a motion by the prosecution to block an insanity plea by the defense northampton county judge michael franciosa ordered last month that a jury from outside the county sit in the trial at the easton courthouse franciosa however rejected a request by the defense to hold the trial outside of the county the judge declared that a jury selected from outside the area will protect henry from a panel saturated with prejudgement of the merits a panel of possible jurors from lancaster county will be selected beginning april 6
