three additional social regulations including closed house party weekends have been added to lehigh's social policy and became effective at the beginning of this semester according to the dean of students office in accordance with the social policy revision passed by the forum xvii and the interfraternity council ifc last semester house party weekends will be feb 6-7 march 20-21 and april 24-25 dean of students john smeaton said during these weekends social events will be limited to the hosts and their invited guests the method of invitation must be personal either written or verbal neither postering a hall or advertising in the brown and white is considered personal an ifc announcement said two additional social policy changes require fraternities to take more responsibility at social events each house is responsible for checking at the door that all party guests are members of the lehigh community or their guests the new policy also requires that a number of hosts of social events take part in a special training program provided by the dean of students staff designed to promote responsible drinking the new rule should be distinguished from the closed party weekends which were part of the social policy during the 1981-1984 period according to rob ripp ifc president those restrictions were placed on the ifc by the university the difference between the crow gets probation for rock throwing by brian cooke brown and while news editor alpha chi rho fraternity has been placed on social probation for the semester because of individuals throwing rocks at campus police officers after being evicted from a crow party the incident took place after an unregistered thursday pubnight party according to senior joe powell crow president at the time of the incident a fight involving aiientown college students took place at the party crow brothers then cleared the party and campus police arrived at the scene eight to 10 people described by powell as townies threw rocks at the police officers after leaving the party a police cruiser and detective mark diluzio were struck charges were listed as offenses against another person offenses against the peace offenses involving property and offenses against lehigh crow appealed on the grounds that the individuals who threw the rocks were not affiliated with the house they pleaded guilty to offenses against lehigh since the party was not officially registered powell said the interfraternity judiciary council declared crow innocent after a hearing nov 25 police officer tony casciano said the individuals were not guests but unwanted party-goers being cleared out by police and house brothers according to crow's appeal smeaton overruled the ijc's decision and the chapter was notified dec 15 powell said he was given one week in the middle of finals to submit an appeal we honestly believe that dean smeaton is more concerned with putting us on social probation than finding out the truth the appeal said house members were permitted to hold open parties while the appeal was processed the fraternity was notified tuesday that their appeal had been denied under the new handbook rules the ijc rulings are only recommendations to smeaton powell explained smeaton told powell in a letter whether the in dividuals were alpha chi rho brothers or guests of your house you are obliged to accept responsibility for their behavior smeaton also instructed powell to write an evaluation of the behavioral and academic dimensions of crow we need to find a way to end the problems that have been occurring i believe the white economy is high technology while the blacks have maintained the status of housemaids street cleaners and miners checole added most people fighting apartheid today are under the age of 20 and 40 percent of the 34,000 students in jail are under the age of 14 checole ex plained he said that the end of apartheid is near not because adults are looking for change but because the youth have said this is enough and they are not going to take it anymore wheri apartheid ends in south africa checole said there must be a rebuilding of society away from the present minority rule to a majority rule he said many in south africa believe the whites are meant to rule simply because they are christian since most of the world is neither christian nor western he asked why western christians should dictate life for others the impact of sanctions is beginning to affect american corporations in south africa checole said pressure from stockholders has forced many corporations to withdraw their holdings no matter how small many companies have seen the economic situation in south africa as unsteady and are withdrawing to save money he added according to checole some companies such as international business machines corp have withdrawn from south africa yet continue to trade through local agencies companies transfer their technology and resources to the whites so essentially they
