wednesday evening feb 11 at the hotel bethlehem announced james j donahue bus banquet committee chairman magoun who addressed the class of 42 last year on now what is love will hold a forum in drown hall following the ban quet as he did on the previous occassion plans for the affair are close to completion still lacking is a toast master president clement c williams dean wray h congdon dr claude g beardslee head of the department of moral and re ligious philosophy dr herbert m diamond head of the department of economics and sociology and e kenneth smiley director of admis sions have been invited as guests during the banquet the class will decide on the senior gift to be presented to the university the question of how the remain ing senior assessment for the epi tome will be paid will also be dis cussed the seniors have paid five of the eight dollar assessment and a decision must be reached as to whether the seniors want to pay the remaining three dollars or take it from the class treasury dr cledo brunetti assistant professor of electrical engineering and now on leave of absence for defense work has been named by eta kappa nu electrical engineer ing honor society as the outstand ing young electrical engineer for 1941 the presentation was made last month at a dinner held at the henry hudson hotel in new york in connection with the winter convention of the american in stitute of electrical engineers the eta kappa uu award is made annually to engineers not more than ten years out of col lege nor more than 35 years of age to recognize meritorious ser vice in the interests of their fel low men it is felt by the asso ciation that the careers of out standing men who are yet in their early thirties will act as valuable guides for undergraduates and in spire new graduates to take up their professional development without delay now bureau radio physicist dr brunetti winner of the award has been on the faculty of lehigh university since 1937 be coming assistant professor in 1939 in the same year he also was ap pointed research associate radio section of the national bureau of standards and at present is on a leave of absence from lehigh as a radio physicist with the bureau engaged on a problem for the na tional defense research board the career of dr brunetti has been quite colorful born in 1910 at virginia minn he worked in his father's grocery while attend ing the local schools entering the university of minnesota in 1929 damage inflicted by lehigh students on lafayette's gymnas ium will be paid for from the rov ing fund it was announced last night by wilkes mcclave 11 bus 42 president of arcadia follow ing the student governing body's february meeting the money amounting to 25.60 was appropriated after arcadia was assured that lehigh men who have not been appre hended did the damage pay ment for repairs for the defacing of the statue of lafayette has not been pressed since it is believed that this damage was done by men from another school arcadia passed a motion ap proving the report of the student houseparty committee and lend ing its support to the student de mand for a return of that function flag pole day has been set for april 30 the last thursday of the month and arrangements have been referred to robert p whip pie chem 43 chairman of the arcadia rally committee create book fund an appropriation was voted to establish an arcadia book fund for the purchase of books for patients in st luke's hospital subject to hospital approval will iam j meikle arts 42 and b william logechnik i e 42 were appointed a faculty emergency committee on educational policy the faculty in its regular monthly meeting yesterday moved to place final responsibility for the decision in the hands of the special policy committee the same group that originally insert ed the provision to abolish the students spring weekend in the emergency accelerated program mimeographed copies of the student report were placed in the in debating the problm in to morrow's meeting the emergency policy committee will consider a report prepared by a special stud ent group which was appointed last week to sound out student opinion and views on the house party problem the student com mittee was named by prof fred v larkin chairman of the policy cimmittee after the faculty moved to reconsider its abolishment of houseparty action situ ation by the governing body states that arcadia is actively and earnestly in favor of the student committee's report on houseparty and is positively in favor of houseparty's reinstate ment this as possible the students should as they have in the past govern their own affairs at this time and that the university administra tion should reduce to a mini mum its interference with stu dent service in an interview yesterday mr morgan stated that numer ous offers are being made to sen iors the majority of which can be regarded as attractive jobs some difficulty has existed in getting enough men for interviews with certain companies looking for men with superior grades said mr morgan many of the companies came earlier this year and secured some of the best men men with physical handicaps will not have the difficulty in se curing jobs this year that such men have had in the past mr morgan explained in fact some companies are looking for men with physical handicaps which will mindanao isle a policy for refunding part of the room rents paid by the dormi tory students will be part of the business discussed at the inter dormitory council meeting to be held at 7:30 tonight in the arcadia room at drown hall announced robert c mcmichael met e 42 interdormitory council president the new housing plan for the dormitories will also be discussed under this plan the section chiefs will be the first to choose what freshman he wants to live in his section he also will be responsible for seeing that the ratio between the men of the various classes is approximately equal under the present plan this is taken care of by the bursar the new plan is intended to eliminate the arbitrary assignment of men to various sections a plan for a partial refund of dormitory rent will be considered since dorm men under the accele rated program will occupy their rooms until the middle of may rather than the middle of june the refund plan is being discussed whereby a proportional part of the rent will be returned a discussion on the question of houseparty and the dormitory pic tures in the epitome will also be a part of the business meeting army officers to interview honor seniors tomorrow the number of hours required for graduation in the college of business administration was re duced for the junior sophomore and all succeeding classes by ac tion of the faculty at the meeting yesterday afternoon in the faculty room of the alumni memorial building one required business course has been dropped from the cur riculum for each semester of the junior and senior years this re duces the number of required credit hours for the class of 43 from 140 to 134 hours for the class of 44 128 hours are required for graduation there is no change in requirements for the class of 42 department of civil engineering was elected second vice president of the pennsylvania society of professional engineers bradley stoughton professor of metallurgy was chosen president oi the american society of metals nelson s hibshman associate professor of electrical engineering was elected vice president of the american institute of electrical engineers it was also announced that the faculty educational club will dis cuss income taxes at its meeting monday in the faculty room in the alumni memorial building the speaker will be a cumming assistant to the chief internal rev enue collector for this district b & w elects 9 to board no significant drop in registra tion due to the war has been noted according to registrar george b curtis so far this se mester 1630 men have registered and more are expected to register soon the total registration last semester was 1720 but there is always a decrease in the second semester said mr curtis only a small number of students were unable to return to lehigh be cause of the draft the effect of the war has been reflected in an increase in appli cations to the engineering college however according to e kenneth smiley director of admissions due to students intention to enlist in the armed forces when they leave high school and to the attractive jobs being offered to high school graduates for the first time in several years freshman engineers have been admitted for the second se mester said mr smiley this has been made possible by the accel erated program which will allow the new men to catch up during the summer session a total brigadier general j.p vachon commanding officer of the ameri can forces on the philippine island of mindanao one of the major theaters of the war in the orient brigadier general vachon was a member of a group of american officers with long experience in the philippine area sent to the far east two weeks before the out break of the war appointed to his present post by general mac arthur ross's father is now de fending the important port of 18 different schools nearly all of these have been in the philippines davao target of repeated japan ese assaults son hopes for commission born raised and educated in an army atmosphere ross hopes to someday fight under his father in the philippines unable to enter west point because of defective vision he hopes to gain his com cission in the army to interview honor seniors tomorrow the number of hours required for graduation in the college of business administration was re duced for the junior sophomore and all succeeding classes by ac tion of the faculty at the meeting yesterday afternoon in the faculty room of the alumni memorial building one required business course has been dropped from the cur riculum for each semester of the junior and senior years this re duces the number of required credit hours for the class of 43 from 140 to 134 hours for the class of 44 128 hours are required for graduation there is no change in electrical engineering society duncan stewart assistant pro fessor of geology was made a fel low of the geological society of america robert d butler assist ant professor of geology was named a fellow of the society of economic geologists jonathan b severs professor of english was granted a subsidy of 1,000 for the continuation of his work on chaucer by the american council of learned societies hale b sutherland head of the department of civil engineering was elected second vice president of the pennsylvania society of professional engineers bradley stoughton professor of metallurgy was chosen president oi the american society of metals nelson s hibshman associate professor of electrical engineering was elected vice president of the american institute of electrical engineers it was also announced that the faculty educational club will dis cuss income taxes at its meeting monday in the faculty room in the alumni memorial building the speaker will be a cumming assistant to the chief internal rev enue collector for this district b & w elects 9 to board no significant drop in registra tion due to the war has been noted according to registrar george b curtis so far this se mester 1630 men have registered and more are expected to register soon the total registration last semester was 1720 but there is always a decrease in the second semester said mr curtis only a small number of students were unable to return to lehigh be cause of the draft the effect of the war has been reflected in an increase in appli cations to the engineering college however according to e be interviewed tomor row afternoon by a board of army officers for regular army commis sions colonel joseph s leonard head of the department announc ed this week the five seniors to be interview ed are edwin h klein arts gren don k sebold e e john h dud ley m e albert clark jr chem frank e smith jr ch e the five students will also under go a physical examination in addi tion to their interviews colonel leonard announced that about seven out of every 100 students interviewed in this corps area re ceive commissions the following men have been elected to the board of the brown and white stephen bus 42 board members are students with two semesters service or more tions to the business college and the arts and science college the net result is a slight decrease in total applications mr smiley ex plained that this decrease is due to students intention to enlist in the armed forces when they leave high school and to the attractive jobs being offered to high school graduates for the first time in several years freshman engineers have been admitted for the second se mester said mr smiley this has been made possible by the accel erated program which will allow the new men to catch up during the summer session a total of 24 freshmen were admitted this term by j harold brindle the war against japan holds unusual interest for ross p vach on bus 43 this interest can be accounted for brigadier general vachon was a member of a group of american officers with long experience in the philippine area sent to the far east two weeks before the out break of the war appointed to his
