foundation will donate a total of 2.3 million to the university's 40 million capital campaign for mountaintop campus development lehigh alumnus and chrysler corp chairman lee lacocca announced the donation tuesday m new york the funds will support lehigh's acquisition renovation and operating costs for the recently acquired 742-acre mountaintop campus as well as start-up costs for the lacocca institute which will be located on the new campus lacocca the campaign's honorary chairman said the gifts existing money a recent 1 million grant from the kresge foundation and an 850,000 grant from the pew charitable trust have brought lehigh more than halfway to its 40-million goal all of you know that one of my highest priorities is to do everything 1 can to make america competitive again lacocca said my alma mater is seizing a wonderful opportunity to do just that and that's why i'm supporting them all the way lehigh president peter likins said it is clear that the educational community must play a greater role m ad vancing american enterprise with lee lacocca s help lehigh can lead the country lee can help us bring together melchert named as a&s dean by bill evans brown and white news writer vice president and provost david sanchez has recommended to lehigh's board of trustees that philosophy professor norman melchert be appointed acting dean of the college of arts and science john hunt the current dean of the college will retire june 30 and pending approval by the board melchert will begin his one-year ap pointment july 1 melchert has been a lehigh faculty member since 1962 and has served as philosophy department chairman associate dean of the college of arts and science and faculty associate for the provost it'll be a lot of work but this next year will be an exciting year because of the physics and chemistry departments joining the college so the college will be rather dramatically dif ferent melchert said sanchez wrote m a memorandum to lehigh faculty and administrators that melchert represents the quality and leadership needed for this demanding task i know that the goals of growth and greater excellence shared by president likins dean hunt the faculty of the college and myself will be furthered during professor melchert's appointment sanchez added the search for a permanent dean of the college will be be re-opened shortly and should be well under way by the fall semester the coming year will be a year of transition and change based on my con fidence m the faculty of the college and m professor melchert i am very pleased carl ruch ruch refused to release the student's name or whether the student had returned to lehigh i think the confidentiality issue has top priority ruch said dean of students john smeaton refused to comment on the situation ruch explained the student tested positively as carrying antibodies for the aids acquired immune deficiency syndrome virus although he stressed this was not a documented case of aids the person as a carrier could infect others with the disease through the exchange of bodily fluids such as semen or blood this particular individual was not feeling that well and left campus for a period of time he said ruch explained that a positive test result doesn't mean that he is going to get aids aids attacks certain im mune system cells to permit the initiation of op portunistic nil r news writer after several continuances and delays the trial of former lehigh student josoph henry is officially scheduled to begin april 6 when attorneys begin jury selection according to the office of northampton county judge michael franciosa henry is charged with the rape robbery and murder if freshman jeanne clery last april dean of students john smeaton and vice president for student affairs marsha duncan will attend on behalf of lehigh several friends of clery will also attend the hearing including sophomores sarah bean and susan kwon kwon said bean clery's roommate from last year will testify at the hearing kwon stated smeaton had said there will be academic considerations given to students going to the trial smeaton however said i know of no considerations that will be given to anyone smeaton said the jury will be selected from lancaster county so they will be less likely to have biased community opinions on the case another safeguard that has been provided henry is a restrictive or gag order to protect the defendant's sixth amendent right to a speedy and fair trial requested by assistant northampton county district attorney j michael farrell and issued by franciosa the impounded dec 22 1986 record says that attorneys police and all others investigating the case may not disseminate any information to the media the trial proceedings originally scheduled to begin m october were first postponed until feb 18 since henry's lawyers missed their deadline to present a psychiatric test to the court the postponement was also to avoid conflict with the final exam schedule of students who had to testify the second extension was set for march 18 so more substantial evidence could be found for henry's insanity plea but that was also postponed and scheduled for april 6 when the official trial will begin according to government professor donald barry the trial may be a very long one since a decision will be difficult considering the many complications of
