concerning lehigh students awareness of the risk of aids flesher explained that programs or materials provided by lehigh to upgrade student awareness of aids can spook out certain kinds of myths however if students do not take advantage of such information efforts to inform them are meaningless he said the bottom line assistant dean of students janet walbert said is that there is nothing we can force on students junior neil smith agreed saying it's probably the students responsibility however he said the burden of being responsible for their own awareness is placed on students because to stop worrying about what it is safe to say when asked why lehigh conducts fewer alds awareness programs than other schools such as columbia university dean of students john smeaton said more could always be done with everything concerning in formational programs on campus in general the i have a fear that lehigh students would not act on the level of information but would act on the measure of schools revealed lehigh has the worst security personnel/student ratio of all six colleges in the study the report conducted by a committee on residential environment under the direction of lehigh board of trustees member kirk pen dleton was submitted to lehigh president peter likins last june there's nothing in that report that's new in formation said dean of students john smeaton who declined to reveal the contents of the report or specifically discuss its results he described the report as an initial assessment adding the report's message was simply that students need to take moderate precautions lafayette moravian and muhlenberg colleges princeton university and rensselaer polytechnic in stitute r.p.1 were surveyed for the report both resident and off-campus students were included in the statistics the report revealed that while lafayette and moravian have roughly the same size security force as lehigh lafayette has about one third as many students as lehigh and moravian has about one fifth as many princeton with 200 fewer students than lehigh has 17 these figures were taken from lehigh s committee on residential environment report completed last june full-time police officers and 1 8 full-time security officers — a total of 23 more full-time security personnel than lehigh princeton's security force conducts foot patrols at all times patrols dormitories inside and out and has an average of eight more security personnel on a typical shift lehigh police enter buildings only on complaint or in hot pursuit according to the report and foot patrols are conducted a few nights a week by the single part-time security officer smeaton who took over responsibility of campus police in march downplayed comparison of lehigh's security to that at other schools he said varying characteristics of each school result in security programs which are highly specialized smeaton said nothing has been done about the results of the report aside from hiring one part-time security officer at the beginning of the school year the campus police system for the main campus has undergone no changes since freshman jeanne cleary was found murdered a year masked attacker strikes again by brian cooke brown and while news editor a man wearing a ski mask exposed himself to two female moravian college students and attacked one of them at about 12:15 a.m thursday according to debbie hoff associate dean for residential life at moravian hoff said the students ages 18 and 19 were leaving the campus library and walking near 2600 gordon st a residential street adjacent to the campus when they noticed a suspicious guy in a nearby yard he jumped out of the bushes and exposed himself to the students who fled one student tripped and fell on her face the second student stopped to help her tripped and fell and was grabbed by the masked man who began to carry her away when she screamed he put her down and fled hoff said allentown police who have taken charge of the matter took the students to allentown hospital where one was treated for a broken nose and the other for scrapes and bruises this is the latest in over a dozen area in cidents involving a ski-masked attacker similar attacks and exposures have also occurred since november in bethlehem allentown macungie lafayette college and lehigh university in all the incidents police said the suspect was described as a roughly 6-foot tall white male in his early 20s who weighed about 190 pounds — a description which according to lethlehem detective phillip richardson fits half the male population ' ' in thursday's attack the suspect wore a dark ski mask with yellow red and green markings blue sweat pants and a hooded sweat shirt baw photo by kathleen gorman peter bedrossian right and curt hillegas
