the brown and white bethlehem pennsylvania lehigh university v 01.98 n0.46 friday april 24 1987 215)758-4181 prosecution rests defense for henry begins the prosecution conditionally rested its case wednesday morning after failing to produce its final witness in the trial of josoph henry 21 of newark n.j henry pleads not guilty by reason of insanity to the rape murder and robbery of lehigh freshman jeanne clery in her stoughton house dormitory room more than a year ago marvin brunson a former cellmate of henry's at northampton county prison was expected to testify that henry admitted manually strangling the 19-year-old coed however the witness failed for the second time to appear in court according to brunson's pre-trial testimony marks on clery's neck were made with a piece of broken glass and not by a slinky toy as the coroner originally suspected brunson added that henry kept a scrapbook of newspaper accounts of the clery murder while the two were cellmates shortly after henry's april 7 arrest the prosecution will re-open its case to hear brunson's testimony if he is located defense attorney j michael farrell called his first witness after nor thampton county judge michael franciosa denied his request for a mistrial based on the prosecution's delay in producing brunson in court dr john o'brien a psychiatrist from jefferson hospital in philadelphia testified under cross-examination that henry tested normal in two brainwave scans the second of the two exams was conducted while henry was sleep deprived and intoxicated while o'brien testified that henry tested normal in this exam he added that henry's inability to remember the test itself fits a pattern of amnesia for periods of intoxication henry's father his high school guidance counselor and two of his high school teachers were included among several other defense witnesses called farrell called the witnesses to illustrate henry's unstable background the major events of the trial from its start on april 15 are as follows april 15 — in his opening remarks assistant district attorney richard pepper who represents the prosecution with district attorney donald corriere described the details of clery's slaying including the beatings and slashings rape and sodomizing that preceded her death according to pepper clery fought her attacker but was inhibited from screaming by the strangulation henry stole valuables belonging to clery and her roommate storing the items in the stoughton house laundry room before returning to check for his wallet pepper said later that day he played a game of basketball and at tended a reception for minority students at the home of lehigh president peter likins as well as cocktails at another dormitory and a dance at the university center during this time henry told several friends he had killed clery to keep her from identifying him pepper said henry was arrested early the morning of april 7 while in possession of the items taken from clery's room he was trial may end next week mssnry is being tried for the rmifger rape and robbery of freshman hb9brk '* ! llil call for divestment postponed by rich rosier brown and while news writer resolutions dealing with south africa and off-campus problems were passed at forum xvii s last meeting of the year april 13 the ad hoc south african education committee presented three proposals to the forum all of which were passed the first was to continue the charge of the committee as a subcommittee next year under the ad ministration and planning standing committee to further consider and in vestigate the topic the rationale is it should be realized that the situation in south africa cannot be solved only by divestment forum will continue in vestigation next year by considering such items as ongoing university education about apartheid and south africa and university programs and scholarship investigation the second proposal passed provides for a committee to be created during the summer by the development office financial aid office and forum summer overview committee to study the feasibility of money and support for undergraduate black south africans at lehigh or at south african universities the proposal calls for all-cost scholarships for undergraduates covering travel as well as other ex penses finally the proposal calls for the administration to look for an independent agency to aid in the recruit ment of both qualified un dergraduate and graduate students the rationale behind this proposal was that in addition to providing scholarship opportunities for black south africans which the university already does undergraduate scholarships should also be offered the committee said providing these scholarships would also be beneficial to the university in general par ticularly if it could establish a community of eight students the third proposal calls for the subcommittee in con junction with the treasurer's office to review the university's holdings in south africa to determine whether lehigh should direct its money managers to gradually withdraw investments from companies with businesses in south africa and to reinvest in companies with no businesses in this country regarding the investment proposal president peter likins said divestment alone would be an example of students ducking the issue and that they should consider other ways of dealing with the situation likins also ex plained lehigh's holdings were small and the companies involved have limited in volvement in south africa making divestment by lehigh ineffective likins said what b&w photo by jim kolberg wednesday's sunshine brought much to light as fresh man benjamin wilson displays his juggling skills credit-hours for mba lessened bykimberlybond brown and while news writer to make lehigh's master's of business administration program more competitive and affordable compared to other mba programs in the lehigh valley the university has lowered the number of credits required for the degree which in turn has lowered the cost however this will not affect the quality of the program the only one in the lehigh valley recognized by the american assembly of the collegiate schools of business aacb management professor james hobbs mba program director said the university is strengthening each course required for the mba degree by making it less theoretical and more real-world oriented all of the courses are going to be given a more managerial decision-making perspective he said lehigh's ultimate goal is not only to offer the mba at a lower tuition rate but to provide each candidate with a better education in a program already highly respected in the business and academic worlds beginning aug 26 an mba candidate without a business undergraduate degree can receive his mba degree from lehigh after completing a total of 48 credit hours rather than 60 as was required in the past the cost for each credit is 475 bringing the total cost of an mba down from 28,500 to about 22,800 the mba candidate with an undergraduate degree in business may be able to earn an mba in 30 credit hours at a cost of 14,250 if he or she has a b in specified courses for which a few see mba page 6 see henry page 4 see forum page 5
