the brown and white lehigh university . bethlehem pennsylvania vol 96 no 1 friday september 6 1985 ■' " '■' ms bfl-41gl by pete trumbore editor iii chief delta sigma phi fraternity has been officially dissolved for four years as the result of a march hazing incident dean of students john smeaton decided in may to dissolve the house following a recommendation for dissolution by the interfraternity judiciary committee delta sig's appeal of the ijc recommendation before the in terfraternity council appeals board was turned down in april when the ifc upheld the original sanction smeaton said delta sig will be allowed to re-colonize during the 1988 89 academic year if the fraternity's national organization and local alumni submit an acceptable plan for re colonization he said a target date of fall 1989 has been set for re-occupying the packer avenue fraternity house . the house dubbed ' packer house by residence operations is now occupied by 33 upperclass men and women res ops director barbara kreppelsaid in a separate occurrence two^former delta sig pledgctgjggre arrested by campus police ajs j when they allegedly attempted to break into packer house according to a campus police report charles calkins 88 was cited for criminal mischief and disorderly conduct and joseph nolan 87 was cited for disorderly conduct the report stated the pair allegedly banged on doors and windows in an effort to get inside according to smeaton the university is investigating delta sig dissolution ruling approved the case and will bring disciplinary charges against the pair in april the ijc recommended delta sig be dissolved after one of their pledges was arrested by bethlehem township police and charged with public drunkenness and underaged drinking according to information released by smeaton the pledge adam hartwell was kidnapped by house members and driven several miles from campus where he was left in an in toxicated state he was found by police near the intersection of willow park road and freemansburg avenue in making it's recommendation for dissolution the ijc cited delta sig's past disciplinary history and its total disregard for previous sanctions although smeaton said he did not investigate delta sig's disdpfinarj history in depth prior to making hi decision to dissolve the house the fact that the house was already or disciplinary probation at the time ol the incident was the deciding factor smeaton said if the members of the house decide to live together off campus they would still be responsible as a group for any violations of university disciplinary policy they are no longer a corporate entity he said but they are still lehigh students smeaton also stated that if a pattern of violations by former brothers develops we will talk with the alumni and make it clear that they are jeopardizing the return of delta sig " see packer page t unknown by martine costello the disciplinary process on campus should not be soley punitive in nature but should provide educational benefits to the community according to new associate dean of students terry curran curran replaced robert cohen who resigned from the university in june he will handle all of cohen's responsibilities including the post of university case officer as case officer he will investigate rule infractions and present the university's case before disciplinary hearing panels i feel i must present the facts as clearly and as objectively as possible not a case which is one-sided to crucify a student curran said the disciplinary process should not be filled with legaleze but should be fair and open to allow all the facts to be heard after reviewing judicial and academic files since his arrival in july curran said in past proceedings there was a tendency for case officers to recommend m * raii % a certain action or to sway the bearing board to what they felt should be done but the hearing panel .„.- , v ,.. jh should make the decision on guilt or innocence he „*~-"""^ said jt k curran mentioned that his predecessor all in all / k had a hard time of it by a lot of different / vb r r people but his colleagues all respected him very a m „. highly he was trying to adapt his philosophy to a i mesh with the new adminstration m these new administrators include vice president l^fchj of student affairs marsha duncan and dean of students jottn smeaton who in their first year at | tl . - jf lehigh initiated policies which are less regulatory and more educational unlike the good old boy syn drome common in the past trends on college campuses nation-wide are moving towards the tightening of regulations but the new administrators are trying to avoid extensive rule rsss^r^w^ra making curran said you make people more associate dean terry curran see legaleze page 4 i computer work progresses sunny daze mtmdvtß of ifiv i#ibm of ov mugkjit through pltoa of paperwork in front of m&m in preparation for academic on slought to com by dan ryan desk editor installation of lehigh's new on-campus telecommunications and computer data net work is expected to continue through the summer of 1986 according to eric otter vik vice president for academic services ottervik said that while the majority of what he called internal construction such as wiring and phone jacks in campus buildings has been finished much of the external construction including the installation of u n derground cables in trembley park has yet to be completed although current work on the network is progressing as planned it is not certain whether it will be completed on schedule ** right now some parts are behind and some are ahead of schedule ottervik said in general it depends upon the outside cable plan being completed before winter when it is cold outside the cable dosen't like to come off the reels he continued when the network is complete and activated by fall 1986 every student living in the dor mitories fraternities and sororities will be able to use telephones to talk with faculty members while sending or receiving data on their per sonal computers without the use of a modem a device normally used to trasmit data over conventional phone lines using a modem prohibits users from talking and transmitting data concurrently unless two phone lines are in use students who uses zenith or other ibm compatible computers will be able to hook directly into the lehigh network from any campus residence using special software according to computing center director gary see computer page 5
