the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol 97 — no 5 friday september 20 ims 215 861-4181 black activist blames white attitude for racism by mar la brecher the basic cause of racism in society is the attitude of the white man civil rights activist charles king said tuesday night in packard lab auditorium what white people have never understood and what black people have never forgotten is that white institutions created the black ghetto white institutions maintain the black ghetto and white society condones it king said king began by questioning the 40 member audience about prejudiced views are you prejudiced he asked and most black and white admitted they were he then proposed which prejudice black or white has the most adverse effect on the other race he stressed that white prejudice affects blacks in areas such as housing jobs and education when king asked how black prejudice affects whites the audience was unable to come up with examples - king predicted different reasons black and white members of the audience would give for their prejudices as king guessed the white answer was i was brought up that way the black answer was the way i and my people have been treated student rejected la demonstration to further demonstrate his belief that white attitudes are the basic cause of racism king called six people from the audience up to the stage three white males two white females and one black male he asked a seventh person a white male john to step out of the room for a moment he then asked the group to hold hands and instructed them not to let john into the circle hurt him if necessary 1 make him feel rejected make him feel oppressed do what you have to do not let him in when john came hack in he was told by king to enter the circle the group of six tightened their hold and would not let him in king then asked a white female to try to get in the circle the group would not let her in either the same occured when a black female tried to break in king then said he would try to break in he walked around the auditorium stopped halfway and began to laugh the group dropped hands confused what king had attempted to prove was that institutions do cause racism haying formed a model institution out of the six people he had instructed them only to prevent john from - entering but being caught up in the game they didn't let anyone else in either they lost their original purpose and proceeded to hurt anyone in their way institutional behavior will destroy you king said it takes away your sense of right and wrong whites most influential pointing out that there are a few exceptions king said that he saw the white male protestant as the most dominant and influential person in society the white male sets patterns and traditions that everyone else must adjust to at one point a teacher in the audience commented about once having broken up a fight between a black and a white student king asked the teacher if he knew why they were fighting and the teacher did not know king said that if he had asked the black student the cause of the fight the probable answer would have been he called me a nigger blacks do not go around striking whites without a cause nine times out of ten this type of fight is due to white causation he said think who you are and what role you play a former baptist minister king also served on president lyndon johnson's commission on civil disorder l _________-_-_-_■b&w phoio by susan hiest anoi charles king suspended mw pfwto ty john thtichler a fribbee float bah n irwmbtn of spastic ptaottee left igh . frtebm dub m tim opponent o for poemteton on the front lawn of maglnnes ham — sammys cited for mischief by pete trumbore editor in chief two sigma alpha mu fraternity pledges were arrested early wednesday morning by lower saucon township police and cited for disor derly conduct and criminal mischief according to a township police report according to police sophomores matthew russo and scott switzer were blindfolded and transported to hellertown where they were left on riverside drive the pair then allegedly pushed a car into the road blocking both lanes of traffic the two were arrested after fleeing on foot to bethlehem the dean of students office is investigating the incident greek affairs coordinator mike boyd said a decision on what disciplinary action to take may be made within a week . boyd said the dean of students office has not made a decision whether to treat the case as a hazing incident you can draw your own conclusions about that we're investigating let's leave it at that to his knowledge he said sammy does not have a history of hazing violations i haven't looked at their file but 1 don't know of any pattern of this with sammy sammy president brian okun declined to comment on the incident in general hazing incidents of this nature are common in colleges across the country boyd said people don't see the danger in this " committee to debate common curriculum by rich simon associate editor the faculty educational policy committee unanimously agreed wed nesday to form a committee of four to eight faculty members to investigate the feasibility of a core curriculum at lehigh although no specific definition of a core curriculum was agreed upon at the meeting if eventually ac cepted a core system would involve major changes in current distribution and required courses in all three colleges its goal would be to give lehigh students in all disciplines a more well rounded undergraduate ex perience by having them take courses in science humanities and business edpol chair man physics professor sheldon radin said one of the issue's major stumbling blocks is the necessary and as yet un documented acceptance of the concept of a core curriculum by the faculty edpol member mechanical engineering professor forbes brown proposed a commission be formed which would deliver recommendations on the issue at the year's final edpol meeting in the spring dean of the college of arts and science john hunt suggested however that the imposition of this motion on the faculty cold turkey without con sulting with the departments or the different colleges would give it little chance for passage dean of the college of engineering and physical science don bollc suggested that the committee obtain the opinion of a group of faculty emeriti because he said they would be more open-minded on the matter radin said he felt the common core is a good idea and that it does have support among the faculty he said it would produce a more broadly educated lehigh graduate 1 don't expect to set up this committee and forget about it edpol will be involved in the decision i will see to that see common page 4
