bydhirenshah america is on its way to becoming a second class nation economically according to lehigh alumnus lee lacocca president and chief operating officer of the chrysler corporation lacocca addressed 300 delegates from nationwide engineering colleges as the keynote speaker saturday for the centennial convention of the tau beta pi national engineering honor society in allentown tau beta pi was founded at lehigh in 1885 in his presentation lacocca denounced u.s trade policies our cockeyed policies in washington are making us a colony again he warned the audience to beware of the policy-makers in washington and stressed the im portance of restoring pride in the american people lacocca said that because of the government's trade policies we're letting our industrial base slip away without even a good fight he added that the american public should just get a little mad get mad enough to change things our trade doors are wide open and that's been the pattern for years he said the reagan administration has done nothing about it but call in the reporters and talk about it the free trade policy practiced by the united states and not by foreign competitors such as japan has led to unfair competition he claimed every other country in the world manages trade in their own self-interest lacocca said citing a production cost difference of 2,500 between american and japanese cars due to a combination of government tax breaks labor costs and fluctuation in currency we could work night and day for five years and have the whole thing wiped out with a single change in the tax laws or a jump in the dollar that is real frustration lacocca related the free trade policy and the federal budget deficits calling the past two federal budget deficits the twin scandals of all time america's top three exports to japan he noted are corn soybean and coal while the japanese flood the american market with cars computers and video recorders what does that sound like it sounds like a colony he commented referring to the trade deficit lacocca said it is starting to cost us our self-respect he also critized the results of a recent new york times poll which showed that americans believe japanese are better workers what ever happened to simple pride in this country lacocca asked how are we ever going to compete if . we start out by saying the other guy is better than me since graduating from lehigh in 1945 lacocca has held the position of president and chief operating officer at ford motor co and is currently chief operating officer at chrysler lacocca is a member of tau beta pi and was joined at the convention by president peter likins and u.s representative don ritter who graduated from lehigh in si both likins and ritter are members of the honorary society party patrol protects new social policy by stuart m silberman editor's note silbennan followed the party patrol on its rounds friday and filed this report the university party patrol still makes its rounds on weekends despite a lack of authority to enforce the social policy they act in an official capacity to see how the fraternities are conforming to the social policy according to greek affairs coordinator mike boyd brad whitaker graduate assistant to boyd explained that the patrol has a list of items they check for at all registered parties the patrol makes two rounds during the evening to see how the party is progressing or digressing he explained with the new social policy this year if a fraternity doesn't have food out they aren't breaking any rules he said the patrollers are observers and simply gather information for the dean of students office whitaker said some of the items on the checklist are whether an alternative beverage is available and attractive the type of atmosphere at the event whether food is available and if intoxicated people are being served boyd added that the food had better not be cold mashed potatoes and the alternative beverage the old a treat bottle covered with dust and spider webs other items on the list are the size of the crowd type of entertainment and whether the bar was being supervised whitaker said the results are used as a statistic rather than warranting any disciplinary action according to boyd each fraternity is supposed to turn in a self-assessment after each party this report is different from the party patrol's he explained the assessment sheet is handed out when the party is registered see party page 5 lehigh university vol 97 — no 10 bethlehem pennsylvania tuesday october 8 1985 215 861-4181 lacocca denounces us trade policy smooth sounds jbbbbmbababbbhhbabhbibai iww photo by steve switaj contemporary crooner jarne taylor strunm and sings away during hla concert thursday night although the show was not a sell-oul audience enthusiasm for his performance ran high the brown and white lee lacocca
