lehigh department of defense dod funded research is certainly nothing new to lehigh where in fiscal 1984 approximately 1.9 million dollars was spent on defense-related research the star wars program is expected to spend 600 million in university research nationwide over the next five years representing the largest increase in dod sponsored university lesearch in more than 20 years more than 1 emphasize optical solid state devices more specifically kirn explained among the star wars project's objectives is to develop a system to track an intercontinental ballistic missile as it approaches a target that means a lot of research is going to be done in many different areas the project also involves tracking devices kirn explained which is essentially fast computers you want to track a moving object which is hundreds of miles away and analyze the orbit through com puters in order for the star wars system to function lehigh social policy subjected to scrutiny see social page 5 by car a tl i rkowsky one year since the new social policy went into effect isn't enough time to tell whether it will succeed according to howard goldstein president of the intrafraternity council there is not a marked change in the atmosphere goldstein commented if there is any change it's in the awareness one you can't see he said he is confident that changes will occur if the student body is given more time to adjust to the new policy the question is goldstein added whether the change will be in favor of the social policy as it stands or a change to stricter regulations we have made progress but theie are still problems with it goldstein said the main problem with the policy is that most people don't understand what the social policy is goldstein pointed out that the students are not
