ouiicll fbi charges t.a with fraud bydhirenshah a lehigh civil engineering teaching assistant has been charged with bank and mail fraud according to david kolde case officer for the federal bureau of investigation in auentown antoine eldik is being held without bail in new york awaiting grand jury hearing kolde said a complaint and warrant were issued in southern new york on oct 1 for eldik . he was arrested on campus oct 22 ac cording to university officials according to kolde eldik allegedly at tempted to defraud banks of large sums of money this summer in new york he added that others were arrested as a result of the investigation but he would riot give any further details eldik was given a hearing before the federal magistrate in philadelphia according to kolde eldik will now be placed before a new york grand jury kolde said if eldik is indited and sub sequently found guilty of the charges he could face up to five years imprisonment and a 10,000 fine * information program on rape coordinated by karen schoono ver a recently coordinated program to inform students about the consequences and the prevention of rape has been deemed a success according to assistant dean of students janet walbert . walbert conducted the first coeducational session tuesday evening between delta tau delta fraternity and alpha gamma delta sorority a majority of the discussion revolved around the issue of consent according to the legal definition rape is sexual intercourse without consent the first question raised was what is consent many of the students both male and female felt that a girl wearing promiscuous clothing or dancing in a suggestive manner relays a message of consent however the common feeling was no one deserves to be raped another question raised concerned when the woman has the right to say no she can say yes at midnight she can v say yes at 12 15 and at 12:30 she can say no and the court will support her walbert said many students said that a woman should not be naked in bed with him if she plans to say no believing that she put herself in that position knowing the consequences greek affairs coordinator mike boyd who also at tended the session told the group to reverse the situation and asked is the girl though obligated to say yes " aaflfflg to this one of the women said that although she agreed that teasing a man is definitely wrong it should never be assumed that a girl wants to have sex in the first place one of the men agreed but added that girls need to be aware that it is harder for a man to stop " a large percentage of the men expressed great concern over a woman consenting to sex at night and then deciding the next morning that she really did not want it one of the men asked if it would help to have a girl sign a consent form before they coast to coast the dod has made more than 600 million available to universities for sdi or star wars research in an effort to gain scientific prestige and support for the project john kogut a physics professor at the university of illinois and one of the initial leaders of sdi opposition has stated since the reagan administration has implied that scientists are supporting it we straight over the summer petitions began circulating at illinois cornell and several other major research in stitutions since then the formal petition drive has reached the lehigh campus where it has been hesitantly embraced according to ferdinand beer professor emeritus of mechanical engineering and a leader of star wars opposition among lehigh faculty this movement is strictly a pledge not to participate in research for sdi and reflects individuals not the university as a whole ' i did find a few people to take hold of this movement but many were afraid of the administration or that their other contracts from the federal government would be placed in jeopardy by signing the petition since early october nearly 10 scientific and engineering faculty have signed the petition compared to other universities circulating similar documents this number is small at lafayette college for example nearly half the scientific faculty has pledged not to solicit sdi funds the per centage of signers at many other schools including princeton and other ivy league colleges is signifigantly higher some of my colleagues i think feel that signing the petition will adversly affect their careers com mented metallurgy professor john wood who along with beers is cir culating the lehigh petition the lehigh petition which is nearly identical to the one being circulated at cornell and other universities states anti-ballistic missile defense of sufficient reliability to defend the population of the united states against a soviet attack is not technically feasible sdl is a step toward the type of weapons and strategy likely to trigger a nuclear holocaust several scientists involved in initial sdi research have since left the project after making similar charges see faculty page t
