editor's note this is the third of a four part series on tbe college of arts and science in september 1984 president peter likins hand-picked a 12-member faculty committee and charged them to investigate new strategies to enrich and advance the college of arts and science eight months later the committee on arts humanities and social sciences submitted its final report delineating seven general proposals and eight specific program proposals i think the report is impressive it's a good start said government professor donald barry committee chairman t while the committee recognized the importance of an arts center they emphasized the appointment of a program development officer as the most important immediate need of the college the development officer will be responsible for fun draising for new and creative programs and research m the arts humanities and social sciences we need somebody m the administration who could be specifically devoted to helping us develop funding proposals barry said additionally barry said the committee emphasized interdisciplinary programs maintaining that existing departmental structures are already well established since the university does not have plans to increase enrollment or faculty substantially he continued the committee recommended that the focus should be to enhance the existing richness within the arts college accordingly the committee concentrated on in terdisciplinary programs which cross departmental and studds speaks to local press on gay rights by dhiren shah by 1990 more young men will have died from aids than died m vietnam according to congressman gerry studds of massachusetts studds the only openly gay legislator serving m the united states congress addressed a group of reporters at a press conference m the university center friday evening following the press con ference studds was the keynote speaker at the third annual fall fundraiser for the allentown-based lambda center the lehigh valley's lesbian and gay community center the speech which was held at the hotel bethlehem was entitled being gay m a conservative america " studds told reporters at the press conference that sexual in sync trumpet player joe long mows his horn during ■concert given in th snackbar thursday night by sync last year's sac talent show winner band member include clockwise from upper toft tad box on keyboard long on trumpet leonard laa on bass brian dorsay on piano and rich mlstratta on drum social policy scrutinized by brad bell the forum social policy subcommittee met thursday to discuss the possibility of replacing the current social policy with social regulations we're not going to crack down and make this a dry campus but we are going to be liable for anything that happens under the current policy dean of students john smeaton said ' the consensus at the meeting was that those present didn't want to see new stricter social regulations but that regulations might be necessary m light of some of the problems that the current policy has had smeaton along with other members of the subcommittee discussed the problems thai have occurred under the present policy the need for more feedback on the present policy the need to educate students on the policy and the possibility of changes within the present policy the meeting centered on alcohol consumption especially at fraternity parties smeaton remarked that upon the installation of the new policy for most people the common interpretation is that the rules are gone problems mentioned included the lack of id checking during parties the problems of local townspeople and students going to lehigh parties and the inability to educate freshmen or anyone else about their inherent responsibility m the social policy if people don't have a vested interest m the social policy we may have to end up going back to social regulations subcommittee co chairman jay troutman said on the topic of fights at parties troutman felt that there should be no problem with keeping someone out of a house the police want you to call them smeaton reminded everyone at the meeting that the social policy was set up to be a dynamic not a static policy solutions for the various problems with the social policy included a written hand-out that summarizes the policy's goals and ways m which the goals can be accomplished all dorm presidents are to be given a copy of the guidelines and the possibility of giving a copy to each fraternity and other students was discussed greek affairs coordinator mike boyd said he would ask the party patrol who is checking ids at parties on the subject of alternative beverages to alcohol smeaton said a number of houses still have the idea that the water fountain is the alternative drinking beverage and he pointed out that there is no penalty for any such violation of the social policy trout-nan remarked that i've talked to the campus police and they think that the serving of chips will help the alcohol problem another topic of discussion at the meeting was the need to educate the freshmen on the goals of the social policy smeaton remarked that there were 22 alcohol related incidents witlv freshman during orientation smeaton said he felt fraternities were hurting the work done to educate incoming freshmen on the terms and goals of the social policy he also stressed that it is important that everyone takes the policy seriously according to smeaton if it has to be the wrath of the dean that solves the social policy problems we'll do it but i don't want to go m that direction see arts page
