lafayette in front of mom than 17,000 fans at taylor stadium saturday blum lad the engineer rushers with 78 yards and scored a first quarter touch down 215 mmui early scores hold up m 24-1 9 win byrichkleban sports editor the lehigh football team grabbed a 24-7 half time lead and then held off a late leopard rally to defeat lafayette 24-19 saturday m the 121 st meeting of college football's most played rivalry senior quarterback marty horn completed 19 of 24 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns m the first half alone and was voted most valuable player of the game for the second time m three years with the victory the engineers concluded their season with a 5-6 record for the second consecutive year lafayette ended the 1985 campaign at 6-5 the leopards now lead the overall series 66-50-5 on the opening drive of the game the lehigh defense appeared as if it had something to prove to the 17,000 fans at taylor stadium tailback bruce mclntyre the leading lafayette runner was stopped before the first down marker and the engineers then gained good field position after a punt of only 29 yards starting from his own 49 yardline horn led lehigh towards paydirt by completing three straight passes and lu students well-behaved by cara turkowsky and liz beezer this lehigh-lafayette weekend was spirited and enthusiastic yet well behaved according to dean of students john smeaton i was absolutely pleased and delighted for the most part with the students behavior at the game smeaton said according to smeaton and campus police chief eugene dax there were several factors that contributed to the improved atmosphere during the weekend one major change which smeaton mentioned was the restriction of people from leaving and re entering the stadium once the game had begun and the concentrated attempt to prevent students from bringing alcohol to the game dax added that blocking off the streets near the stadium from traffic and assigning every officer a designated area to patrol on saturday also helped to prevent potential problems there were a couple of isolated problems which isn't bad with a crowd of 17,000 i thought it went well dax commented the problems included 1 1 lafayette students and two lehigh students who were arrested at the game for either public drunkeness or disorderly conduct the police did a tremendous job of maintaining behavior without being interfering and obnoxious smeaton commented the officers main concern was safety of the people according to dax b&w pholo by bill wiisom new network compresses parking area by tony coppola computer networking has caused many parking problems on campus this semester according to christopher christian manager of transportation services networking has eliminated parking spaces altogether christian said he cited the work currently being done m the area of whitaker lab as a prime example christian added that m all networking has knocked out between 30 to 35 parking spaces throughout the campus other effects of networking are more temporary ac cording to christian trailers transportation of materials and detours have been less of a burden to the situation most often resulting m students having to park farther away this has resulted m students parking off-campus m many instances and neighbors are not pleased by this he commented faculty and students debate athletic aid bymarygreczyn wrestling has been a rallying point for the alumni according to keith rust a member of lehigh s board of trustees lehigh needs representative athletic teams alumni don't follow losers and they don't give to losers according to rust the alumni force at lehigh university is one to be reckoned with rust discussed athletic policy with administration faculty and students thursday afternoon at taylor residential college what role do you want athletics to play at lehigh university is the question that should be considered concerning non-need-based athletic scholarships he said stacy swider 89 mediated the taylor topical juice discussion outlining a hypothetical scenario to initiate it she described a situation m which a high school senior who is both an excellent student and wrestler wants to study engineering and participate m wrestling at lehigh other colleges are actively recruiting him and have offered him full athletic scholarships lehigh however only offers need-based scholarships and his family's income does not meet the qualifications for financial aid she said mathematics professor albert wilansky said the mathematics department recently voted unanimously to oppose the awarding of non-need-based athletic scholarships these scholarships unlike those which are need-based are granted without regard to financial need this first step toward having a professional team is a very bad one he said in orddfl^fee a university of distinction lehigh should not restr^t itself to athletics industrial engineering department chairman george kane said this distinction should be year-round rather than just during particular sports seasons i favor no-need scholarships but i don't want them restored to athletics he said however economics professor
