bethlehem steel corporation to buy homer research laboratories the south mountain home of the steel company's research facilities if lehigh buys the property the main campus and the murray h goodman campus in saucon valley will be directly connected the size of the campus will double providing the university with space for future expansion the eight-building 539,000 square foot facility and the surrounding 1,000 acres are assessed for tax purposes by northampton county at 31.5 million john woltjen university vice president and treasurer who is negotiating the purchase for lehigh would . not disclose the steel com pany's asking price if funding for the purchase can be secured woltjen said the university wants to buy the property by the middle of this year woltjen said the final decision to purchase the research facility would be dependent on action by the board of trustees we have not made any recom mendation to the trustees woltjen said but they know we are interested in the property president peter likins notified the faculty of the university's desire to purchase the research facility in a dec 19 memorandum vice president of research joseph goldstein said the memo has caused anxious concern among the faculty who are wondering if the laboratory facilities will be adequate for their needs faculty are also concerned about transporting students to classes at the mountain-top research center if it is used for academic purposes at this stage however the university is unsure of what programs if any will be see homer page 4 edpol subcommittee supports need-only aid by dan ryan managing editor the faculty committee on educational , policy unanimously passed a resolution wednesday supporting a report by its adhoc subcommittee on intercollegiate athletics recommending the university continue to offer athletic scholarships and grants on a need-only basis the subcommittee's report dated jan 13 1986 recommended the university continue offering scholar ships and grants to lehigh athletes only if their ability to attend the university depends on receiving financial aid in reaching this conclusion the report recognized that intercollegiate athletics play a role in the lehigh com munity that goes far beyond the nearly 600 students on our teams the success of teams often generates pride in and identification with lehigh the report stated however the report also said successes cannot be measured in mere victories indicating that much of the pride in lehigh athletics comes from the fact that the athletes are students first because of this commitment to academics the report concluded there is little to be gained and much to be lost if the university alters its traditional practice of need-based scholarships the subcommittee chaired by soda relations chairman james mclntosh is one of seven charged by vice trcslußhl lu sluuent attsm mwnns^otfkuf^hmf investigating lehigh's athletic scholarship policy in delivering the report before edpol mclntosh ex plained some of the logic behind the subcommittee's recommendation he stated the subcommittee realized the problems of athletics were problems of dollars but that recommending increased expenditures including non-need based aid was not considered because not all of us on the committee know enough about what is going on at lehigh and such a recommendation could keep vital funds from other departments on campus in addition to approving the recommendation on athletic scholarships edpol also unanimously passed a resolution supporting the subcommittee's recom mendation calling for an upgrading of the women's athletic program and for improvements to women's athletic facilities sharon brown plans include organizing the cfs summer enrichment program while working closely with students now in the program to assist them in having a successful semester besides coordinating cfs brown's duties as assistant • dean include advising the black students union and minority program committees meeting with the cfs advisory board planning the annual minority recognition dinner held in april and assisting associate dean terrence curran i enjoy very much being the board of trustees at their meeting friday according to vice president and treasurer john woltjen tuition will rise from 9,550 to 10,500 room and board prices will also be increased thus making the total cost of attending lehigh for a freshman anywhere from 13,930 to 14,330 during 1986-87 a significant part of the increase is due to net working woltjen said he explained that students will be able to plug their personal computers into an outlet in their room beginning this fall students will then have access to the university computer system as well as a school-wide telephone system as a result woltjen said one-third of the tuition in crease and one-half of the room increase is due to net working the cost of living in a dormitory is scheduled to increase from 210 to 250 brown chosen assistant dean by elizabeth varg a news editor sharon brown former chairman of the minority faculty and staff council at trenton state college has been named assistant dean of students and challenge for success program coordinator at lehigh cfs formerly headed by vicky sanders was established last year as a support mechanism for black and hispanic students it offers a variety of services aimed at
