unfortunate victim of the causing hazardous driving this hapless vw on icy roads and low visibility resulting from the storm grad school dean submits resignation by elizabeth varq a news editor dr jerry king announced his decision last tuesday to step down from the position of dean of the graduate school as of june of 1987 according to assistant professor of education francis harvey chairman of the graduate committee the announcement came at a meeting of the graduate committee i don't think anyone expected it he didn't specify any reasons harvey said according to harvey king told the committee that he had met with president peter likins and vice president and provost arthur humphrey regarding his desire to resign from university administration and return to teaching „ dr king will be a difficult person to replace he has done an excellent job as dean and i have enjoyed and will enjoy working with him for the rest of his time as dean harvey commented president likins described king's post as a difficult administrative assignment the responsibilities of deans are substantial and throughout all this time since 1981 king has continued to be a serious and devoted professor likins said he can understand how those in administration cherish the faculty experience and desire to return to it adding that king was gracious in letting the entire academic environment know of his decision so far in advance king also a professor of mathematics was appointed to the lehigh faculty in 1962 and named dean in 1981 in 1976 he was honored with the stabler award for teaching which is given to the best university professor as chosen by students king received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and both his master's and doctorate in mathematics from the university of kentucky purchase of homer a natural move by lehigh says likins by claire slutter president peter likins warned that bethlehem steel will sell homer research laboratories to someone else if lehigh does not purchase it and the possibility exists that the new owner may act against lehigh's interests the compelling reason for us to own the land is bluntly to keep other people from owning the land likins said in an interview thursday lehigh's original intention when negotiations began last summer was to purchase the land needed to join the two campuses but bethlehem steel informed lehigh feb 3 of its intention to seek buyers interested in both the land and homer labs i have to understand their position likins said commenting on the problems this stipulation has caused for lehigh if they seu off part of the land to us that might eliminate a potential buyer for the composite he also added that bethlehem steel is giving lehigh every opportunity to buy the property both lebigh and bethlehem steel representatives are stressing the ten tative nature of the negotiations likins predicted that it will be another six months before the negotiations yield any concrete results he stressed that financing for the acquisition will be supplied entirely by outside funds the purchase will not be supported with an increase in tuition tuition rates may even decrease in the future if the income-generating potential of the larger campus is realized likins said from the perspective of the year 000 this looks like a wonderful and natural thing for lehigh to do life brings opportunities in waves and see homer page 5 preciate the fact that they stabler's managers have to raise revenue to cover costs the only way you're going to do that is with outside activities one aspect of stabler leder is particularly critical of is the nature of the building itself he said stabler has tried to be too much of a multipurpose facility and because of this it performs no one function perfectly it's attempted to meet a variety of needs he said and it can't fit itself perfectly to all of them conversely richard fritz director of stabler arena praised the multipurpose aspect of the facility because of the design fritz said stabler can accommodate basketball wrestling large university dances and dinners in addition to professional rock concerts and ice shows the gift here he said is somebody came up with a design for an arena that works so well unlike leder fritz said the design of the building allows an intimate feeling to be achieved see stabler page 4 views curtis clump associate dean of the college of engineering and physical sciences has seen the arena evolve from the planning stages in 1971 through completion in 1979 and up to the present i've seen the results of it be said and i don't see it serving the purposes that were originally in tended clump sees stabkr's original purpose as serving the university but he said that he doesn't see that happening instead he sees a trend toward more community events such as ice shows and rock concerts in stabler he acknowledged that stabler's role as a community facility was a selling point and i don't have a problem with that but he said it's becoming more of a community arena than it is a university arena history professor lawrence leder also sees stabler as increasingly serving outside interests he said it is arena has been operating for seven years and during that time events ranging from wrestling and basketball to commencement and perfomances by the harlem globetrotters holiday on ice bob hope and sting have been held there but in the final analysis the worth of a building like stabler must be measured in terms of how well it has per formed the tasks it was initially designed to do originally the arena complex was seen as a facility that could serve both the lebigh community and the lehigh valley university interests were to come first in terms of using stabler for sports commencement and lectures to serve the lehigh valley stabler was to be used for rock concerts family shows and ex positions not surprisingly this question of fulfillment of purpose has produced a variety of
