15 entertainment to feature mexico travel slides student-faculty relations extra-class activities sports to be studied the problem of bettering student morale was selected as the topic for the years discussion by omi cron delta kappa senior honorary leadership society at the initiation meeting wednesday night in the arcadia room in drown hall the report submitted by the top ic committee which selected the morale problem from a list of top ics suggested at the previous meet ing separated the main topic into three major sub-divisions these were 1 extra-curricular activi ties and their gradual absorption into the curriculum 2 sports ac tivities and 3 student-faculty relations discussion at the meeting brought about a realization of the major factors to be investigated these were a determination that a lack of student morale exists me thods of measuring student morale and ways of securing a better morale in addition to presenting the major topic the committee suggest ed alternate topics and listed top ics for progress reports during the year these latter were the health service playing fields for intra mural athletics and a review per iod before final examinations before the business meeting ini tiation ceremonies were held in drown hall at that time the four seniors pledged on nov 10 were initiated into the society after the initiation a dinner was held in lamberton hall the meeting was attended by eight faculty men one alumnus and 13 undergraduates the annual lehigh-lafayette peace pact will be signed at the delta tau delta fraternity nov 7 at 8:30 a m by representatives from both schools started in 26 this pact states that both schools will do all in their power to continue this tra dition on a friendly and sports manlike basis the pact was fusing of arcadia and the three living group councils into a single organization with arcadia as the cabinet of the group will be a top ic of consideration at the next meeting ol arcadia wilkes mc clave 11 bus 42 president of ar adia and leader of last night's meeting promised mcclave's action followed a query by dean wray h congdon who attended the meeting in drown hall last night in which the dean of undergraduates ques tioed the apparent dual authority of the current combined councils and arcadia present chief student governing body dean congdon stated that he now is not certain of the status of these two govern ing bodies arcadia is legally the chief gov erning organization although the combined councils formed at the suggestion of arcadia itself last year has assumed discussion of important student issues among other actions taken at the combined councils meeting last night were 1 discussion of conduct dur ing houseparty weekend 2 combined councils ac ceptance of arcadia's recom mendation to gain greater stu dent representation on stu dent-faculty governing bodies as the problem of the year 3 definite system for allo cation of fall houseparty football game tickets was agreed upon 4 the decision to follow up last year's attempt to install pre-examination preparation periods in his discussion of houseparty conduct at lehigh dean congdon brought up the following list of points which have been issued to the three councils for study 1 what are the responsibili ties of chaperons at house parties 2 what are the responsibili ties of students towards chap erons 3 what justification is there for dates not being in their dormitory quarters within 30 minutes after the official clos ing time of the dance 4 what justification is there for dates being housed at a hotel 5 how can we eliminate even such amount of student drinking as now occurs dur ing house party weekends 6 what suggestions do you offer for improving each of the difficulties or unsatisfactory conditions recognized by you in the above questions to appoint 4 groups four committees will be ap pointed to carry on the years pro gram for strengthening student representation on administrative committees a committee compos ed of interfraternity council mem bers will study the housing prob lem in hopes of bringing deferred rushing to lehigh the inter-dor mitory council will appoint a group to study means of increasing student representation on the building and grounds committee the present shortage of rooms in town will be studied by the town council a presidential committee to investigate strength gligence that cannot be tolerated at the present time all but seven of the fraternities have complied with the state fire regulations al though some of the houses are in the process of getting fire escapes or fire walls those which have not complied at all are kappa alpha pi lambda phi pi kappa alpha alpha kappa pi and sigma chi because so much private prop erty was lost at the chi psi fire reveral of the houses are consider ing personal property insurance for their members four houses al ready have such insurance these are alpha kappa pi beta kappa delta upsilon and pi lambda phi the fact that some fraternity houses have not yet observed state fire laws concerning fire escape and fire walls is a serious threat to their members safety according to wray h congdon dean of under graduates in a letter to the var ious fraternities the results of the fire on mon day would have been much graver had it occurred during the night or during houseparty weekend dean congdon said stated that no action would be taken if they were returned within a reasonable time william a siegele 41 was burned around the eyes face arms and chest as a result of an explosition yesterday afternoon in the tnt 1 course which is being given to employees of the trojan powder company as part of the defense measure siegele who was making an acid analysis built up too much pressure in the apparatus the ex ploding acid sprayed him produc ing the bad burns he was taken to the dispensary where he was treated by dr carl o keck who reported that the wounds were more painful than serious senior banquet arcadia will investigate councils proposal arcadia will discuss organiza tional plans for the student coun cil at its meeting at 7:30 p m monday night in drown hall arcadia will also consider spe cial appeals for emergency grants from the unbudgeted funds of the student activities fees the plan to combine arcadia and the combined councils was sug gested at the latter body's meeting last night and the details of organ ization will be taken up at the ar cadia meeting the agenda for the meeting in cludes a discussion on a topical file for the combined councils so that there will be a suitable means of filing and keeping records of the work of the combined councils the questions posed by dean wray h congdon at the combined councils meeting in reference to houseparty conduct problems will be brought up for discussion plans to incorporate dad's day arrangements into arcadia's con stitution will be made cyril d jensen associate pro fessor of civil engineering will teach a selected group of bethle hem boy scouts to become troop instructors in mapping he will hold his first meeting nov 8 the students will map an area around center street and elizabeth ave nue at their first class the object of the course is to qualify scouts as mapping experts siegele is badly burned in chem lab yesterday failure to meet current fire laws is serious threat to fraternities continued on page four by j h brindle further combination of lehigh's student governing bodies into an omnipotent student council was suggested last night at the first meeting of the combined councils fusing of arcadia and the three living group councils into a single organization with arcadia as the cabinet of the group will be a top ic of consideration at the next meeting ol arcadia wilkes mc clave 11 bus 42 president of ar adia and leader of last night's meeting promised mcclave's action followed a query by dean wray h congdon who attended the meeting in drown hall last night in which the dean of undergraduates ques tioed the apparent dual authority of the current combined councils and arcadia present chief student governing body dean congdon stated that he now is not certain of the status of these two govern ing bodies arcadia is legally the chief gov erning organization although the combined councils formed at the suggestion of arcadia itself last year has assumed discussion of important student issues among other actions taken at the combined councils meeting last night were 1 discussion of conduct dur ing houseparty weekend 2 combined councils ac ceptance of arcadia's recom mendation to gain greater stu dent representation on stu dent-faculty governing bodies as the problem of the year 3 definite system for allo cation of fall houseparty football game tickets was agreed upon 4 the decision to follow up last year's attempt to install pre-examination preparation periods in his discussion of houseparty conduct at lehigh dean congdon brought up the following list of points which have been issued to the three councils for study 1 what are the responsibili ties of chaperons at house parties 2 what are the responsibili ties of students towards chap erons 3 what justification is there for dates not being in their dormitory quarters within 30 minutes after the official clos ing time of the dance 4 what justification is there for dates being housed at a hotel 5 how can we eliminate even such amount of student drinking as now occurs dur ing house party weekends 6 what suggestions do you offer for improving each of the difficulties or unsatisfactory conditions recognized by you in the above questions to appoint 4 groups four committees will be ap pointed to carry on the years pro gram for strengthening student representation on administrative committees a committee compos ed of interfraternity council mem bers will study the housing prob lem in hopes of bringing deferred rushing to lehigh the inter-dor mitory council will appoint a group to study means of increasing student representation on the building and grounds committee the present shortage of rooms in town will be studied by the town council a presidential committee to investigate strength gligence that cannot be tolerated at the present time all but seven of the fraternities have complied with the state fire regulations al though some of the houses are in the process of getting fire escapes or fire walls those which have not complied at all are kappa alpha pi lambda phi pi kappa alpha alpha kappa pi and sigma chi because so much private prop erty was lost at the chi psi fire reveral of the houses are consider ing personal property insurance for their members four houses al ready have such insurance these are alpha kappa pi beta kappa delta upsilon and pi lambda phi the fact that some fraternity houses have not yet observed state fire laws concerning fire escape and fire walls is a serious threat to their members safety according to wray h congdon dean of under graduates in a letter to the var ious fraternities the results of the fire on mon day would have been much graver had it occurred during the night or during houseparty weekend dean congdon said contempla tion of the catastrophe so narrow ly averted last monday makes clear that any further delay to provide adequate fire prevention for your residence housing frater nity men is a matter of gross ne the senior class will hold its first general meeting at the annual class banquet it was announced today by archie d w tifft bus ! class president plans for the affair i are now being made by a banquet ! committee composed of james donahue bus chairman albert tromer bus john dudley m e and edward bodine m e tifft said that main topics of dis cussion at the meeting would be the general state of class finances and the annual class gift the ban quet committee will meet early next week to discuss time and place for holding the banquet and possible main speakers according to donahue an effort may be made to secure f alex ander magoun sociologist from m i t who addressed the class last year on problems of marriage at the junior banquet over three hundred and twenty dollars in equipment is still miss ing today from the bethlehem fire department as a result of student actions at the chi psi fire monday the equipment consisting of 21 rubber coats nine pairs of rubber boots eight helmets and one as sistant fire chief shield was an nounced as missing yesterday by george j ruyak bethlehem coun cilman who stated that a search was being conducted for the lost articles he expressed the belief that all the equipment would be returned within a few days the combined councils which met last night in drown hall re quests all students possessing these articles to return them as soon as possible to the office of andrew w litenberger director of build ings and grounds they will then be handed over to the city this action was supported by a letter of similar nature from dean wray h congdon to the editor of the brown and white both dean congdon and ruyak recognized that the articles were taken unknowingly in the heat of the event by students acting as volunteer firemen and stated that no action would be taken if they were returned within a reasonable time william a siegele 41 was burned around the eyes face arms and chest as a result of an explosition yesterday afternoon in the tnt 1 course which is being given to employees of the trojan powder company as part of the defense measure siegele who was making an acid analysis built up too much pressure in the apparatus the ex ploding acid sprayed him produc ing the bad burns he was taken to the dispensary where he was treated by dr carl o keck who reported that the wounds were more painful than serious
