student affairs marsha duncan will now decide the fate of non-need based scholarships in january of 198s president likins announced that partial wrestling scholarships would be given by lehigh university for an 18-month trial period during this time duncan was to coordinate a study of intercollegiate athletic programs and associated financial policy • „ she said lehigh was really just buying time by awarding scholarships so the university can debate what to late last spring seven individual subcommittees were briefed by the vice president and explained what needed to be discussed among themselves their reports were due with duncan april 1 four weeks ago today on july 1 of this year a report describing the results of the sub committee's findings and recom mendations from duncan concerning lehigh's athletic policy is due on likins desk the board of trustees should act on - likins recommendation in october depending on their agenda at this time the lehigh community should know among other things whether wrestling scholarships on a non-need basis will be continued duncan explained that the outcome of this very controversial issue now in her hands will not be an easy decision to make there are valid arguments to be made for doing it both ways she said " the financial aid committee the faculty committee and the student life visiting committee all would say scholarships should be based on need while the intercollegiate athletic committee the alumni committee and the forum committee came down 180 degrees the other way duncan said the athletic visiting committee has not yet sent a written report to dun can but she said they verbally have tentatively decided that lehigh ought to allow for aid above need the subcommittees all have provided rationale and good thought duncan said adding that she is a little concerned about the sections of the study besides the scholarship issue the campus gets caught up on what we are going to do on that singular issue regardless of how that is decided the kinds of recom officers may announce senior speaker tomorrow by dave leiqht editorial page editor a commencement speaker may be announced tomorrow night at the senior sendoff senior class president beth mora said yesterday at press time an offer was still outstanding and mora said she hoped the person would be in contact with her or president peter likins yesterday afternoon by 7 p.m there was still no word if the person declines mora said she and the president's office are as yet undecided about what their course will be there are still a few names on the list of candidates they are considering asking she continued in that case seniors will probably be notified of the speaker choice through a letter lehigh's 118th commencement ceremonies are scheduled for sunday june 1 . last year's commencement speaker john irving was an nounced by likins sept 5 1984 at the time likins called irving author of the world according to garp and other novels a presidential favorite the selection of editor and publisher malcolm forbes chairman of forbes magazine inc to speak at ceremonies the previous year was announced by likins and class of 84 president kevin clayton in mid january clayton said the selection process had begun in mid-april of the year before and in recent years graduation speakers had been chosen as early as ' september and as late as note this is the last of a two-part series on career planning and placement services whether students are successful in job hunting depends more on factors other than the number of job opportunities according to many experts in touch with the current job market director of recruiting at princeton university ann long said princeton gets the more desirable com panies on campus because of its alumni she ex plained that princeton sends out hundreds of letters every year asking alumni to get their companies to recruit on campus in one case princeton tried a more unusual ap proach long said the placement center surveyed students and found advertising was one of the most sought-after fields she said they then targeted the advertising industry and made a concerted effort to attract the big names to princeton this involved taking students for an advertising career day in new york city and setting up an internship program long said however that princeton was in an en viable position compared with colleges across the nation mary jones recruiting coordinator at syracuse university agreed that princeton's case was special jones said that despite the fact that syracuse has a prestigious school of communications it has trouble getting the media to recruit on campus according to jones syracuse does not recruit employers to in terview on campus but tries to keep in contact with alumni and track down where liberal arts students have gone in the past syracuse puts advertisements in its alumni bulletin and recently established an mo number for alumni to call with job leads charles doherty director of placement at moravian college agreed that most of the com panies that employ liberal arts majors don't come to campus there are whole industries like health care and the media that just don't recruit and it's like that at colleges across the board doherty said he urges liberal arts students to use the resources at the career center but not to depend on them for everything it's important for liberal arts students to try and tap the hidden job market he said according to director of the career planning and placement servive eugene seeloff a number of companies write him requesting that students send resumes then anouncements of these opportunities are posted with the regular interview notices eighty nt of all jobs are not advertised seeloff said the path to employment is never clear ask a nd graduates and you'll hear a thousand different stories he said dors at several schools agreed that the key to finding a job now seems to be networking making informal contacts according to seeloff students can make contacts with alumni and potential em ployers by doing some job research luck seeloff said is where opportunity and preparation meet see
