lehigh university brown and white vol s3 !*•. 3 bethlehem pa friday september 17 i 97 i 866-0331 marching band refuses females this year's marching band has decided that although the university has become coeducational it will remain an all-male institution response to this decision has been quick to come bill jesse 72 a student member of the forum plans to present a proposal to the committee on student affairs asking them to take some action on the band's decision should their present policy be considered a sufficient affront to the rights of women on campus possible action to be taken might include a cut-off of funds to the band band members seem ready to stand on their decision the major reason behind the decision as seen by tom voistock the drum major involves the preservation of the band's famous esprit de corps band members do not want women to march with them and they maintain that the rights of the majority should not be sacrificed to those of the minority as the present finances of the band now stand a cut-off of funds would hurt female members as well as male members women in the band are presently permitted to participate in every activity of the band including playing in the stands and riding along with the band to away games but they are prohibited from actually marching on the field uniforms constituting the only band expenditure in which women are not allowed to take advantage are provided by the alumni when the alumni presented the uniforms to the band two years ago it was with the stipulation that they we're to be used by the 97 marching men of lehigh for the next 10-years since the alumni association is considered to back the band in their decision this contract might play an important role in the ability of the committee on student affairs to make any decision b&w photo by smar although the university has accepted coeds this fall - - the marching band has decided to retain its masculine image on the football field according to the alumni the uniforms were made for only men opinions on wage price freeze given by economics department among the professors in the department of economics at lehigh the opinions over the nixon-economic-football-game range from complete approval through neutral resignation and finally adamant disapproval this is not unusual it exists ' even among nixon's top advisors one member of the economics department jay aronson described the wage-price freeze as an attempt to wish away the economic problems behind inflation nixon's decision to float the dollar he says is about the same as nixon deciding that we all shall be one year older upon our next birthday the wage-price freeze has the same effects as a cease-fire in a war it allows things to cool off while everyone stops and thinks about what is going wrong dr nicholas balabkins explained that a price-wage freeze such as president nixon has instituted cannot possibly have any effect upon inflation he noted that it may not even be able to operate as an effective stop-gap measure without full rationing labor conscriptiom and floor space conscription the only way that he sees to make any good come out of this policy is to institute a tripod bargaining system in phase 11 there ne government sits at the bargaining table with labor and management more or-less dictating the terms of the settle ment in many cases both economists agree to some extent on the contribution of organized labor's monopolistic power to the difficulty of the present situation aronson said that meany's complaints about the unfairness of the wage-price freeze in favor of business were made from a purely political stance with little real basis in fact labor and business were equally caught short by nixon's sudden move balabkins agreed with this when he said that national economic interests were completely irrel evant to meany at lehigh the effects of the freeze were few the tuition increase being out long before aug 15 and the teaching salary raises allowed because of the special decision of the price control board con cerning teachers salaries upon initial announcement of the program dr finn jensen head of the economics department called the move absolutely essential in an interview with the bethlehem globe times he went so far as to indicate that an earlier inception of the plan would have been even more effective all three professors were opposed to the import surcharge claiming that it could lead to reciprocal action by other nations and ultimately a serious slacken ing of international trade aronson suggested however the purpose of the surcharge was not to restrain trade but to indicate that nixon was serious in his proposal to float the dollar u appoints chaplain after one-year search after a year of research
