research at the new jersey zinc company last night at the year's first meeting of the chemistry society dr stutz whose topic was re search in the zinc industry went on to say that since both produc tion and sales are swamped with orders industry is not particularly interested in bettering the product or interesting more customers and consequently leaves the researcher up to his own devices a movie giving a brief review of zinc research was shown by dr stutz including glimpses of re search on the place of zinc and its compounds in paints rubber and alloys it showed typical research scenes and processes one of the features of the talk was a demonstration of the diff erence between phosphorescnt and fluorescent lighting and an exhibi tion of the various properties of these two types of illumination zinc almost pure according to dr stutz zinc is now being commercially produced which is better than 99.99 per cent pure furthermore the small amount of impurities remaining is carefully regulated he further said that in producing zinc and other metallic sulfides for use in luminous paint less than one ten thousandth of one per cent of cer tain materials will cause the sul fide to condition in which some sections are filled with members of a single class would be abolish ed this according to john i kirk patrick assistant to the president and secretary of the housing com mittee tensile tortion beam and fatigue tests cyril d jensen associate pro fessor of civil engineering faculty adviser explained the aims and the benefits that students receive irom membership in a course soci ety he also stressed the necessity of civil engineering students to meet and associate with the men of their profession mr william fisher an employe of the structural steel division of the pathologist at st lukes hospital illustrated dr biro's talk the next meeting of the society will be held thursday nov 20 dr robert w hall professor of biol ogy has offered the use of movies on tuberculosis taken by the tu berculosis association for this meeting a tentative date for the christmas banquet with alpha epsilon delta has been set for dec 11 forty nurses from st lukes hospital have registered for the demolay date bureau it was an nounced by howard hoch presi dent of the demolay club this brings the total number of regis trants from lehigh moravian col lege for women st lukes hospital and allentown hospital to 100 all lehigh students who wish to use the date bureau for next weekend are asked to contact any of the men mentioned in the last issue of the brown and white the club held the first series of luncheons on wednesday at lam berton hall all work and no play makes jack a dull boy goes the old saw and jack lehigh can certainly demonstrate its truthfulness in
