lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday october 26 1971 vol 83 - no 14 866-q33 1 apartments considered for palmer house site by gary s hauk the future of undergraduate housing brightened last week when preston parr dean and vice president for student affairs submitted to the forum subcommittee on residence what the administration believes to be an imaginative and flexible housing program after more than a year of research and study of housing at other schools dean parr dean of residence clarence campbell dean of student life william quay and jerry barney of planning and development committee have made several assumptions about the future directions of undergraduate living at the university although a recent residence subcommittee study of the freshmen class indicated that most freshmen find their residence situation at lehigh acceptable to very good parr's report noted that an attempt at diversity should be made at the university this is necessitated by the changing building trends across the nation changing desires of students and a criticism of the somewhat obsolete typical dormitories with double rooms and gang bathrooms students today want more and more privacy and want to be able to change their living environments to suit their individual personalities and reflect a little of them selves some students also would prefer to get away from a living group situation and opt for a smaller grouping which would provide both independence and inter-relation with the academic community the parr report explained architectural and economic considerations make it unfeasible for the university to provide private apartments for each student who might want one so any attempt b&w photo by mccormick shown above is the centennial ii housing complex lehigh is faced with a severe undergraduate housing shortage it has been predicted that the univer sity will need 200 new undergraduate living units by 1973 thus plans for new housing concepts will begin immediately white trash slated for lafayette weekend edgar winter's white trash and king crimson have been scheduled by the concert committee of student activities council to perform on lafayette weekend the concert will take place at 9 p.m on friday no . 19 in grace hall tickets will be 4.00 estimated costs for the performance are 3,000 for king crimson 3,500 for white trash and 3,650 miscellaneous totaling 9,650 about 2,500 people must attend for the committee to break even the concert committee's budget for this year has heen set at 75,000 for music and 25,000 for miscellaneous expenses scott hopkins chairman of the committee said that there is a backstop fund of approximately 3,000 to subsidize losses any loss over this amount would be taken from next year's budget and probably eliminate the concert committee last year the only loss totaling 3,500 occured at the delaney and bonney and friends concert the lafayette weekend concert is the only concert planned this semester due to the full schedule of actitivies in grace hall next semester the scheduling of grace hall allows three concerts although no definite plans have been made the possibility of having the beech boys and johnny winter perform is being considered 1.03 million in scholarships offered 1971-72 by john klucsik editor's note this is the second in a series of three articles dealing with finanical aid.i in trying to meet the needs of students the university must consider not only financial need and scholarship but also how the aid will be granted and the effects of this distribution on the character of the student body director of under graduate financial aid william e stan ford says we are trying to meet financial aid requirements and also keep in mind the socio-economic mix on campus most financial aid at the university is granted in the form of scholarships free gifts from the university to the students this year scholarship aid to undergraduates will total 1.03 million an increase of 120,000 over last year according to stanford grants are based on need and academic performance we have a reward system based on need says stanford another type of aid is through university loans as well as national defense loans and loans from private sources up 48 000 from last year the university is providing joint deportment head sought by scott penniman yates department übben will not accept the position of the new head if it is offered to him he has nominated dr anne herst of the russian department übben said that the new head should not dictate policy he even though dr herst is not a department head she is qualified because she has a full professorship the other logical choice for the new head is dr john van eerde chairman of the romance languages department van eerde believes the change is a sensitive one and is hesitant to talk about it asked if he was against the change van eerde commented that of universities comparable to lehigh the great majority keep the departments separate when a shown above is a portion of the 2500 guests of lehigh upperclassmen were on campus this weekend saturday's events began with a meet die faculty coffee
