brown and white vol 83 - no--+s ejkyyeyoowcwonooooocococoooootc tuesday november 2 1971 866-0331 responsibilities rights in drug laws outlined by jonathan bick i put this question and answer session together because i think a knowledge of responsibilities and rights is the only way a fraternity can proect themselves from the narks said alan johnson » 7 2 student organizer of last thursday night's drugs the student and the law meeting johnson continued after the tau epsilon phi(tep raid i was upset i wanted to do something joe reynolds assistant to the dean of students barbara solt coordinator of lehigh volunteers council and charles vihon assistant professor of business law each offered ideas these ideas led to a question-and-answer type meeting followed by the distribution of a transcript of the meeting to all living groups on campus i hope to identify what the requirements of the law are said prof vihon in opening the meeting i will deal with the processes leading up to criminal procedures in the court room he added donald cohen an attorney from easton was to have been the main speaker cohen was unable to attend for personal reasons and so vihon took the floor and answered questions johnson offered the first question suppose drugs are found in a fraternity which is used by more than one person is the house responsible who can be arrested vihon answered "... drugs found in a common room is analogous to drugs found in a hotel lobby or any other public place . . a fraternity is a corporation neither ■may be brought into court on criminal charges . ." one freshman asked does the univer sity have the power to invite the police into a fraternity or a dormitory to look for drugs . . since the university owns the building % vihon answered " . . the student ts the tenant and only the tenant has the right to invite some one into the building when an owner rents a building or a room prof charles vihon and allan johnson 72 organizer of the drugs and the law seminar entertain questions in thursday night's meeting the session was de signed to make students aware of their responsibilities and rights under drug laws b&w photo by mccormick faculty pass calendar ask canine control by maria zumas whoever thinks that faculty meetings are dull affairs would have been most impressed with the faculty's look on the lighter side yesterday afternoon it stemmed from professor alan h stennlng*s resolution for the control of canine life on campus the resolution which was passed called for northampton county dog licenses proper medical shots and registration with the university for all dogs pro fessor ferdinand p beer's amendment for a dean of dog life was also whole-heartedly approved dr w.deming lewis president of the university added that any interested persons should not hesitate to apply for the job - stenning said that he did not mind dogs attending his classes but when they start yelping and carrying on it becomes quite aggravating he noted that he had made a proposal in the past for dog control and the dogs did thin out for a week but the next week they came back and there were more of them than ever more serious business was also handled at the meeting debate centered on the 72-'73 school year calendar while the faculty approved the calendar many were reluctant to approve the extension of the experiment into the 73 74 school year since various university offices need the calendar a year in advance it is important to know how the school year will be arranged the faculty passed provost albert c zettlemoyer's resolution which called for extending the experimental calendar into the 73-'74 school year professor shelden h radin's resolution concerning faculty control in certain areas was passed unanimously the resolution stated that the number of classes in a semester the length of time of each class and the length of exams should be determined by faculty professor paul b myers chairman of the committee on educational policy presented a resolution foijt.'the definition of a full-time student myers stated that the university does not define a full-time student but it is generally believed that 12-hours constitutes a full-time load according to university regulations a student can drop a course after 1 2-weeks registar james h wagner is shown in the center of the ipicture ad dressing the faculty on the topic of student classification wagner said that state law defines a full-time student as one who is enrolled for at least va of the normal load rotc enrollment increase motivated by new draft bill by 808 christian universities and colleges throughout the nation have been swept this year with a sharp increase in reserve officer training corps rotc enrollment the trend was motivated by the new draft bill eliminating student deferments retro active to the class of 1975 many incom ing freshmen with low draft lottery numbers are fearful of being drafted out of college decided to enroll in rotc in order to get a id deferment lehigh being the only university or college in the lehigh valley to offer rotc courses also felt the effects of this surge altogether there about 65 university students who decided to add rotc to their schedule following the passage of the draft bill late last septem ber out of the 65 45 students went into army rotc 15 went to the air force and the remaining five dropped out after a few weeks both departmental chairmen army colonel ben louis wechsler and air force lieutenant colonel glenn f stauf fer greet this opportunity to meet students who normally wouldn't have enrolled in rotc with open arms not looking upon the new cadets as draft dodgers the chairmen said they feel that the cadets are just trying to serve their country to the best of their capabilities by being an officer stauffer explained the rotc com missioned officer has a longer military obligation four-six years than the draf tee two years the cadet understands this obligation and therefore cannot be accused of dodging military service both col wechsler and col stauffer feel that the new draft law will not have lt col glenn f stauffer see rotc page 4 see vihon page 4 see undergraduate page 4 preregistration the schedule for preregistration i of freshmen engineering students is as follows 4:10 p.m mon nov 8 aadland to gustavson 4:10 p.m | tues nov 9 haddad to oye 4:10 p.m wed nov 10 pace to ziegler all meetings are in packard lab | i auditorium if you have a confllict on the 1 date noted above please attend one | of the other sessions if you cannot attend any of the sessions please see dean gallagher associate dean of the college of engineering in § room 308 packard lab before nov 8 a late preregistration fee will be assessed for all who either miss the assigned dates or fall to make other arrangements
