part of the educational process at the university was the theme of a statement presented to the university forum monday during a meeting which dealt primarily with committee reports including academic affairs community relations and student affairs the printed statement presented to he forum by william b leckonby director of athletics included the topics of scheduling and recruiting leckonby s statement said that the university tries to provide opportunities for students to participate in intercollegiate and intramural athletics according to the level of competition available within the university ln a particular sport in the section dealing with recruitment his statement noted that athletically inclined applicants are treated the same as any other student entering the university with regard to admission and financial aid the report also stated we the division of athletics favor the retention of the present number of varsity sports in addition to varsity sports the statement editor's note this is the first of two articles concerning the in touch program at the university in touch individuals near to offer understanding concern and help is a student-initiated and developed idea that grew from concern for the growing problem of drug abuse in touch has five major goals in mind the first is a drug information center on the physical psychological social and legal aspects of drug usage second is a program of speakers on the different aspects of drugs the speakers would also be available to outside groups and especially schools a telephone crises counselling center for students having a bad experience with drugs and needing immediate help and a referal service that would refer those requesting help to professional advisors and doctors and possible treatment are also planned aims the fifth goal is a dispatcher service comprised of trained volunteers who would give immediate help to a drug user in trouble volunteers would be accompanied by a doctor whenever possible the in touch center located on the first floor of mccllntic-marshall house ls the hub from which the services of in touch will be administered from this center the in touch program will provide three distinct services to the surrounding community a drug library facility would serve as a drug i nformation referal service resource a crisis counseling service where 24-hour telephone counseling is available will be instituted this would also serve as a referal service matching the individual with the resources best capable of dealing with his particular problem a flying squad is the third service to eliminate liabilities asso ciated with crash pad operation this dispatch service will be available sending trained personnel to the scene the center will be staffed 24 hours a-day by a minimum of two trained lehigh student i volunteers according to in touch director wally hilton there are presently 22 student volunteers the volunteers are now under going intensive training on drug education the training which consists of about 12 hours on weekends has three main objectives . . drug education academically educating the volunteers on drugs and their effects social work or training on how to work in a counseling situation and personal awareness sensi tivity training student volunteers the student volunteers will act as a resource lor questions concerning resource and rehabilitation facilities and specifically on drug use or related topics these students will be expected to present only substantiated facts and refer inquiries to appropriate sources if they cannot truthfully answer a question student volunteers will try not to act as authorities on the drug scene they will lead group discussion sessions on drugs and drug related topics throughout the community in order that factual information may permeate the community in touch will be recruiting many pro fessionals to help in their training program dr geri hennesy of operation concern inc a drug rehabilitation center in south jersey will speak on her personal haynes notes importance of intellectual excellence we are going to save ourselves by our intellectual excellence and not in any other way stated thomas haynes professor of philosophy haynes spoke thursday at the forum trustee representative's hearing on the 10-year plan haynes commented that lehigh is not so far up that we can continue to get the students we want . . unless we concentrate on the intellectual life of the university he noted as an example that princeton university has a high-powered intellectual life that enables them to get alumni contributions presently haynes noted the development office is placing emphasis on gimmicks such as the all-university complex in order to induce alumni to make contributions these alumni who are among the largest contributors to the university probably would not be as willing to contribute as much money if most of the funds were earmarked for intellectual purposes haynes however stated that there is an untapped silent majority of alumni who don't fall for the gimmicks and would be willing to step forward and contribute money for intellectual needs he expressed the belief that the university should make an increased effort to attempt to reach these alumni speakng about his fears and faiths concerning the future of the university haynes noted two discouraging trends that have recently developed first he is concerned about recent cutbacks in staff size he noted that in many instances as men leave they aren't replaced because of economic hardships in addition he expressed his fear over the fact that the library budget is being cut back even as the need for an ever-growing library budget is becoming more important forum trustee representatives left to right richard greene prof george dins more prof charles vihon and paul maloney listened to testimony thursday concerning the proposed 10-year plan at the meeting prof thomas haynes spoke of the need for the university's committment in the future to its intel lectual life b4vv p hoto by smar volunfeers plan wednesday fast for pakistanis more than 560 students have agreed to give up their three meals on wednesday nov 10 to help raise money for the eight to 10 million starving pakistani refugees the lehigh university volunteers council who is sponsoring the fast will receive compensation of 1.33 from the dining service for each student who sur renders his meals the money raised will be sent to a national service agency either the world university service and the pakistan refugees or oxfan-america these two organizations ran a nation-wide fast on nov 3 for the east pakistanis but lehigh received the materials too late to initiate a fast last wednesday last year floods hit east pakistan destroying almost the entire crop west pakistan has since given little aid to the east and a civil war developed many pakistanis driven by starvation and per see lehigh
