consulting and working with government and industry his firm works directly with federal state and local politicians industry and regional planning groups to solve urban as well as rural problems thus udall continues to campaign for the conservation and development of natural resources a highlight of his first term as secretary of the interior came in 1962 when he represented the u.s on a tour of russian hydro-power installations during which he and poet robert frost talked with nlkita khrushchev originally scheduled to talk was walter hickle former secretary of interior hickle cancelled because he is currently publishing a book udall was chosen because he is active in conservation stewart udall projection 76 plans to aid housing crises by peggy kittek on the basis of projection 76 it is anticipated that women will be housed in mcclintic-marshall and richards next year said clarence b campbell dean of residence no de/inite plans will be made until the number of women admitted next year is known projection 76 plans for 75 women to be housed in richards and 130 women in m&m a main consideration behind the housing outline was the placing of fresh men women in the same general area as freshmen men richards and m&m were chosen mainly because of security and clarence b campbell exams to conclude before xmas under new calendar provisions by scott penniman the advantages of the new calendar were cited by dr leonard wenzel wenzel chairman of the department of chemical engineering headed the sub-commitee of the forum which proposed the 1972-1973 calendar last june registration next year is on august 30 the first term ends december 21 and the next semester begins january 15 the year will end may 17 the major advantage of the new calendar cited by wenzel is that the first semester ends before christmas vacation students he said complained that they could not study during the holidays in the new calendar finals begin the 13th and end december 21 he added that the period after vacation is not an academically productive one anyway teachers he said often have to waste time reviewing after vacation is over some students have complained that the christmas break is a good time to finish research papers wenzel said the point is well taken but he would like to know how papers get done in the spring semes ter another controversial point in the new calendar is the provision that finals be limited to two hours the physics depart ment in particular has complained that two hours is insufficient time to cover the course wenzel said that the committee considered both students and faculty in this proposal and decided that two hours is sufficient to cover the courses and puts less strain on the students than a three hour final wenzel commented that the most advanced of our technicians are also the most conservative the new calendar replaced the present experimental calendar wenzel explained that the experimental term of the old calendar had expired and the committee decided to look into a better idea the 1972-1973 year is a one year experiment wenzel said that he does not consider the new calendar as a permanent solution but he feels it is worth looking at research into the calendar examined other universities methods the one most discussed was a 4-1-4 calendar the 4-1-4 consists of two four month semesters with a one month semester in between devoted to independent programs dr jonathan elkus director of bands was in favor of this program because of the independent study program whichcould be used effectively in band wenzel said the subcommittee did not accept this pro posal because research showed that in universities with this program only half of the students participated in independent study the new calendar has 151 school days while the old one had 158 the reason for he decrease is due to the modification and adding of vacations and breaks elect ion day is a new two day break on novem ber 6 and 7 two days in february are another addition christmas vacation be cause it is also the end of a semester has been lengthened to 24 days easter is included in a mid-semester break from march 17 to march 26 potential liability threat delays in touch program by pat fekula since my return to lehigh this fall i've had to go out on numerous calls to talk students down after they've had a bad experience with drugs commented in touch director wally hilton he con tinued the university is in dire need of this program yet we are still encount ering a delay from as far backasseptem ber third the delay in initiating the program in all phases is caused by an investigating of the type and cost of insurance to cover liability suits that might possibly arise the most part of the program is the dispatch service or flying squad the flying squad is considered to be an integral part of in touch as there is no other such service in the bethlehem area mem bers of the flying squad would go directly to the drug user thus lessening the liability of a so-called crash pad where users sometimes congregate when they need help coming down . " our operation is not to preach to the individual hilton went on but to help the drug user who has an immediate need the personnel of the flying squad would either call an ambulance if hospitaliza tion is warranted or engage in the process of talking down the drug user if we go out on a call with a physician and the drug is unknown the treatment is usually talking down rather than risking reaction to antidotes stated hilton since the flying squad is located at the in touch center which is a student manned facility it should be viewed as less threatening by drug users and thus better able to direct the individuals to b&w photo by smaio it's that way fellas prof john steckbeck directs the turkeys in this year's trot around south mountain more than 600 students including co-eds attempt ed the annual test of endurance which took them overmore than two andahalf miles of senic campus road see page 8 see renovated page 4 see forum page 4
