lehigh university brown and white vol 83-no 21 friday november 19 1971 866-0331 dr here to head new language dept by donald suss following six weeks of consultation the administration announced monday that the departments of romance languages and literatures and of german and russian will be combined into a single department of modern foreign languages the chairman of the new department will be dr anna p herz professor of russian the change will become effective with the beginning of the spring semester feb 1 1972 the decision to combine the two departments was reached following consultation with the fulltlme faculties of the departments the appointment of dr herz as chairman of the new department marks the first time in 106 years at lehigh that there has been a female head of an academic division in connection with the decision dean yates of the college of arts and science stated with the advent of coeducation we anticipate a growing interest in education in modern foreign languages including an increase in the number of majors and a demand for a greater variety of the languages to be taught the new department will provide a more suitable administrative framework for growth along these lines than is possible under the present arrangements the scope of the new department yates continued is potentially greater than that of the two older departments the latter two were confined to several european languages the department of modern foreign languages can serve as a home for non european languages such as klswahill which has up to now been attached for administrative purposes to the department of romance languages and literatures yates emphasized that the new depart ment will support the special integrity of the languages taught under the direction of the new chairman he said the respective faculties in french spanish german russian and kiswahili the banner across dravo house shows the spirit of freshmen in past years this year students will be able to show their enthusiasm at a bonfire in sau con valley the pile of wood will be set on fire at bp.m that is if leopard rooters don't get to it first see cnb's on page 4 for bus schedule dr anna p herz udall stresses environment by pat fekula about 500 people turned out tuesday night to hear steward udall speak at grace hall udall was the secretary of the interior under the kennedy and johnson ad mini strati ons . udall who stated he was no artist but liked poetry opened the lecture by reading from an article he had written about robert frost john kennedy and nikita krushchev entitled a memory of poetry and power reading for almost in minutes his rhetoric showed his great respect for both kennedy and krushchev and his fondness for the late poet frost continuing with his lecture limits the environmental imperative of the 1970'5 udall stated it is trying at this time in history with all the power we have at our disposal and the great demands to harmonize these forces on this spaceship earth however there are limits built into this planet and we must recognize these limits earlier in the day at a pre-arranged news conference udall commented during my eight years in government my attitudes and judgements went through a metamorphosis some of my beliefs and views changed 180 degrees in the early days of the kennedy administration udall stated i voted for the expansion of the space program and the race to get to the moon if just half of the money that went into the space program would have been spent on our cities we would not have many of the problems we have today the american people are an adventuresome lot and this program did fit into the american pattern — to conquer space however man found the solar system a dead system man found the earth is indeed a spaceship and he must learn how to manage and love it with care and to keep it a place where humans can live udall asserted that in the past growth and progress was the american way but b&w photo by richardson steward udall trash & crimson possibly last concert by vernon bournique this concert is do or die if we are to have anything at all next semester said stan cohen 73 a member of the student activities council cohen however remains optimistic about the success of friday night's scheduled performance of edgar winter's white trash and king crimson according to cohen only 600 tickets had been sold by wednesday but an acceleration in sales is anticipated by concert time tickets will also be available at the door cohen emphasized that any concert in the future will hinge upon the success of this concert if the concert is not successful then future performances sponsored by the university will be doubtful outside promoters will not be allowed another committee member observed that lehigh has never come through with a concert that was sellable most concerts at lehigh have rarely made money and since the concerts have been small budget we have never been able to get out of the hole he added the committee was given 7,000 to backstop concerts for the entire year and if this concert fails that money will not be available the committee has hopes of scheduling the beach boys and sha-na-na for the spring semester therefore the back-up money is needed for future use tickets to the show to be held as a concert-dance are 4 busses from friday night's bonfire will return in time for the 8 p.m performance white trash see herz page 5 see udall page 4
