lehigh university brown and white vol 83 no 36 bethlehem pa tuesday february 29 1972 86 033 i 3 from lehigh study drugs at workshop three members of the lehich community recently returned from a two week workshop over semester break at the yale university drug dependence institute representing lehigh were dr robert r panos assistant director of counseling and testing service barbara e solt coordinator of volunteer com munity services and walter e hilton 111 74 director of a student community drug help program the program was sponsored by the yale department of psychiatry and the national institute of mental health the object of the workshop was to provide a good background into the drug problem—not only in regard to college campuses but to communities in general the program consisted of lectures field trips and group experiences the group visited new york city and saw three drug rehabilitation centers in harlem midtown manhattan and brooklyn the lectures were concerned with phar macology what effects the use of various drugs have the kinds of treatments and programs available and how effective they were and how drugs affect certain bodily processes the lecturers were psychiatrists medical personnel and pharmacologists from the university of connecticut and yale the question that most people concern themselves with according to dr panos is what leads to drug usage in the community especially in the ghetto but also with college students the answer lewis withholds article submitted for lu news by steve glickstein university president w deming lewis refused permission to print a story in the lehigh university news last november the story written by director of publica tions john w murphy concerned the debate over the 10-year plan and the controver sial all university complex reactions to dr lewis action varied ranging from unqualified approval to accusa tions of censorship the proposed article was a sequel to the news october reporting of the forum debate in which the legislative body rejected the all university complex by a 43-39 margin the october article presented both viewpoints concerning the 10-year plan although briefly and with little detail there was no objection raised to the publication of the october story the november issue was to have included the continuation of the still hot debate focusing primarily upon the forum trustee representatives open hearings on the mostly unfa vor i^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^h able to the administration backed all i^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^h complex was quoted verbatim mcfadden outlines his most significant personal observations first mcfadden found unprecedented student demand for legal education and need for at least four possibly more law schools in pennsylvania alone u.s bureau of labor statistics bulletin 1701 projects a 22.7 percent growth in require ments for lawyers 1968-1980 mcfadden underscored this point by stating that both the lehigh and the north ampton counties bar associations en thusiastically support the establishment of a law school at lehigh data compiled by the subcommittee also point to a law school as being a tremendous asset to a university par ticularly regarding joint programs joint appointments and multi-purpose use of facilities mcfadden also proposed that the uni versity explore the possibility of receiving financial aid from the state and federal governments the subcommittee neglected to study the effect of a law school on under graduate enrollment or the precise capital costs of the facilities both myers and leads to im-j6 weapons defects inquiry by edwin mier a twenty-one page report compiled by the connecticut citizen action group ccag and prepared by ralph nader's public interest research group pirg charged the colt firearms group of hartford conn with knowingly sabot aging the quality control program in the production of the all military services m-16 rifle an investigation into the accusations pending in the defense department and the house arms services committee stems from the report by the connecticut group which was initiated researched and co-authored by william sklar a june 1970 graduate of lehigh university according to the report based on affi davits from former and present colt employees many weapons barrels were hand-bent in an attempt to remedy in accuracy—parts which were supposedly interchangeable but did not fit were still used weapons which failed accuracy and rapid-fire tests were passed and efforts were made to deliberately pass otherwise defective weapons by official government quality control inspectors the final report by sklar and ccag director toby moffett was forwarded to the headquarters of ralph nader in wash ington d.c who organized and keeps
