first in a series of three articles on the abor tion law movement in the lehigh valley a male baby believed to be about one hour old was discovered yester day in a trash can in a woman's rest room at easton hospital the infant was taken to the maternity ward and is listed in good condition today a plastic bag found nearby was be lieved to have been used to carry the baby into the hospital bethlehem globe-times oct 27 1969 * unwanted children and illicit abortions have been an ill-concealed fact of life in the lehigh valley for years between feb 29 1969 and dec 20 1971 six fetuses were found discarded in the beth lehem sewage plant at shi mersville road all showed evidence that they resulted from back-room abortions four other fetuses found in 1968 led dist atty charles spaziani into a search for an abortion ring which was eventually uncovered but illegal abortions con tinued in addition to the six confirmed abortion-products found at the sewage plant other fetuses have been found in the same area all suspected products of 3000 pounds of paper gathered for recycling freshmen cliff la vine and john horsting have started a recycling project in richards and dravo houses about 3,000 pounds of news pa per sand magazines are being collected each month after former governor william scranton spoke on ecology earlier this semester cliff lavine contacted chuck loher 73 who is head of the recycling project at theta chi fraternity soon afterwards lavine started publicizing a recycling project in richards with the aid of the gryphons and posters lavine soon was collecting about 300-pounds of magazines and newspapers each week john horsting a b&w photographer was coverings volunteers council meeting and heard loher talk about the recycling drive he volunteered to help and found himself recycling coordinator for dravo these two freshmen each night collect newspapers and stack them next to the garbage cans in their dorms they then tie up the papers and put them in their rooms each week loher comes down and collects the accumulated paper and takes lt up to theta chi when enough has been collected it la brought to a repulplng plant where it is sold at the rate of 60-cents per 100-lbs the money received all goes to the volunteers council to help pay for their different projects if this project succeeds in the freshman dorms as well as at theta chi a more comprehensive recycling project is planned for next year all trash except plastics could be recycled at lehigh since lehigh consumes a large volume of paper and glass this would not only aid the ecology but would bring in money and save on garbage collection fees studenf bill of rights gets hearing thursday a proposed student bill of rights and responsibilities will be the subject of an open hearing thursday at 7:30 p.m in the osbourne room uc the complete text of the declaration which outlines basic freedoms and obligations of students in the areas of admissions academics expression and discipline may be found on page seven the document was prepared byafo.um subcommittee chaired by carl zvanut 73 after more than a year and a half of investigation and revision already approved by the forum student affairs committee and the dean's council the declaration subject to changes arising from the open hearings will be presented to the forum for final approval at its april meeting the idea for formulating a student bill of rights was first advanced by dean and vice president for student affairs preston parr tn october 1970 parr brought to the attention of the student affairs committee of a joint aaup american association of university professors)-naspa national association of student personnel administrators statement entitled the rights and free doms of students although there were separate written and unwritten guarantees for students in various faculty and admini strative procedures there was no single formalized document stating the principles of student freedom at lehigh consequently a subcommittee was established to draft a bill of student rights along the aaup-naspa model it was emphasized however that the forum document should deal not only with rights but student's correlative responsibilities to the university according to zvanut the original aaup naspa statement was judged to be too iffy and ambiguous the subcommittee spent months interviewing various students faculty and administrators once all information was gathered the subcommittee felt confident in changing the shoulds to wills b&w photo by kendi new centennial school building in saucon valley has been completed at a cost of 675,000 the sprawling one-story structure will house both the ele mentary and secondary school operations of the school of education harrisburg 7 couple to lecture sunday anthony and mary scoblick members of the harrisburg seven will speak on " faith and politics at the 11 a.m protestant service in packer memorial chapel sun day they will als'j speak on the trial of tnr^tarrlswfff^^ven and its social significance at 7 p.m in packard lab auditorium the programs which are co sponsored by the office of the university chaplain and the forum for visiting lecturers committee are free and open to the public as members of the harrisburg seven mr and mrs scoblick former roman catholic priest and nun are being tried for allegedly conspiring to kidnap pres idential advisor henry kissinger blow up the heating system of federal buildings in washington d.c and remove and destroy draft records the scob licks have been actively involved ln work in urban rhettos as well as the peace movement anthony scoblick was ordained a priest in the society of st joseph an order dedicated to work among black americans he served for two years in black parishes in louisiana and baltimore where he began questioning the vietnam war par ticularly its effects on blacks shortly thereafter he met father phillip berrigan and became active in the peace movement mary cain scoblick 44 undergraduate forum slots open for wednesday elections members of the lehigh community will get an opportunity to exercise their franchise next wednesday and thursday in the all university forum elections the election will be held to fill the 44 slots open for undergraduate represent atives there are ten at-large positions available which are elected by all under graduates the 11 arts representatives will be elected by arts college under graduates 17 engineering representatives will be elected by the engineering college undergraduates and the 16 business representatives will be elected by the business college there are 18 at-large candidates 16 arts candidates 16 engineering and 11 business candidates in the election there will be a total of 61 candidates on the ballots there will also be space for write-in candidates these votes will be treated the same as votes for the listed candidates the voting areas will be on the second floor lobby of
