lehigh students first dined at the mess in oid christmas hall on the lower cam pus rapid growth of the univer sity in both students and faculty during robert a lamberton's years as president forced the mess to stop operations in 1887 lehigh then had 20 years of grow ing pains and students found rough strong and fraternal sub stitutes for a common dining hall in the town eating clubs which rose to a boisterous heydey the lehigh university dining hall was constructed in 1907 stu dents called it the commons and the first monthly meal ticket was sold to parke b frain of the class of 1909 and present assistant professor of physics at brooklyn polytechnic institute the growing university again became short of breath and funds in 1924 and because the dining hall was losing money meal service ceased fraternities which then numbered 24 were employing their own cooks and had long ceased patronizing the commons the building was turned over to the military department and became the armory dining service was renewed again in 1928 in the basement of drown memorial hall when stu dents pleas forced the administra tion to provide some sort of cam pus eating facilities this site serv ed
