hubert humphrey said when he met with students from ten area colleges last thursday to tape a showing of college speak-in i do believe that the penalties are wrong he added " legalization no decri initialization yes the program will be aired on wlvt tv channel 39 at 10 p.m on tuesday may 2 the show was aired last sunday at 10 p.m humphrey arrived an hour late and was quite at home in the question-and answer format of the program he cover ed a number of issues during the session asked about the effect of philadelphia mayor frank rizzo's endorsement of president nixon on the election humphrey stated it is obvious that rizzo will not have much of an effect on the primary in the general election if he gave active support it could have an adverse effect i hope that by that time i can convince him that his early flirtation should be reversed as for governor milton shapp*s en dorsement of senator edmund muskie humphrey said that the people of this state are independent i regret that the governor has seen fit to make this a personal campaign i think it's going to backfire become political backlash humphrey stated later that thenation al primary is better than what we have going now it bugs me that i'm away from my job he also felt that politicians get boring by the time we get to run against nixon what is there to say humphrey skirted the bussing issue nicely bussiflg is one of the answers where children have poor schools bussing serves a role in bringing about integrated schooling there are better answers but i don't see any way out of using bussing he added that " massive bussing for a quota system is wrong we ought to learn together to live together race problems are deeper than the bus humphrey expressed surprise at nixon's china visit saying he was the b&w give a public talk here on monday may 1 at 8 p.m in sinclair laboratory auditorium he will discuss managing corporate enterprise the chief executive's point of view this special public lecture is presented by lehigh s department of management and finance and is coor dinated by dr benjamin litt associate professor in the department before joining mack trucks in 1965 hansen occupied executive positions with diamond t motor car and truck companies white motor co automotive equipment company and international harvester and export companies locally hansen is a member of the lehigh country club and an honorary member and paul harris fellow of the allentown rotary club he is president of the national council and chairman of the pennsylvania council of invest-in-america he is a life associate member national trustee and chairman of the committee of one thousand for the freedoms foundation in valley forge in addition he is a member of the national advisory board of the macarthur memorial found ation zenon c.r hansen nixon's chopstick diplomacy lauded by research director by paul mitchell president nixon's chopstickdiplomacy is a valuable first step towards realistic relations with communist china accord ing to dr gerald stiebel director of foreign relations at the research insti tute of america this evaluation was made by dr stiebel in a speech titled communist china peace in asia which he delivered tuesday night in whitaker lab auditorium the lecture was the fifth of six talks on the present world political situation co sponsored by the lehigh university departments of military science and aerospace studies and the lehigh valley international relations club dr stiebel analyzed president nixon's recent trip to china the focal point of the chopstick diplomacy with a descrip tion of the effect of the trip on the major world powers china japan the soviet union and the united states with regard to the reaction of com munist china itself dr stiebel stated the chinese wanted the trip as much as we did he indicated that although there are presently several schools of isolationist thought in china they are balanced by significant factions who favor relaxation of international tensions stiebel went on to indicate further evidence of schisms in china by illustrating the split between the chinese communist party and the chinese people's liberation army the army today is not the sole power in china as it was during the cultural revolution stiebel explained yet even with the rising power of the party it is clear that the army still plays an import ant role in china's affairs stiebel cited the fact that of the 29 provincial party chiefs local governors 20 are military men in addition 15-20 per cent of the budget is devoted to the military indicating a military-industrial complex bigger than that of the united states he indicated that presently the leaders of the army are basically anti-united states however the civilian leaders of the pelitlburo presently are in control also present said stiebel is the spilt between the technocrats and the agricul turalists presently there is strong anti technology sentiment prevalent in all areas except for weapons systems stiebel explained that the motivation for this feeling is the desire for the chinese to remain independent of the world's techno logical giants whom they would be forced newport folk festival features pete seeger the newport folk festival to be held at lehigh this weekend has added a new performer to its list pete seeger this man is perhaps the foremost folk performer in the united states he has recorded well over 100 albums and is the guiding force behind the sloop clearwater which cruises the hudson each summer the sloop is organized in the interest of the environment it exposes industrial pollution and brings old-time music festivals to towns along the river pete seeger is known for his political activity as well as his music during the mccarthy era seeger was one of the first men to be called before the now defunct house un-american activities committee and he has been an anti-war spokesman for quite some time besides the traditional music and performers which he has brought to the cities pete has written many well-known songs his adaptation of the book of eccleslastes into the song " turn turn turn probably best exemplifies the inseperablllty of ideal and music which is pete seeger other performers slated to appear include michael cooney who plays guitar banjo concertina and dobro and elizabeth cotton a 78-year-old woman who plays left-handed guitar with great skill john jackson the soft-spoken grave-digger from virginia will appear as will grant rogers joe hickerson john cohen and the putnam string county band all of the performers will be on hand for the concerts on both friday and saturday at 8 p.m in grace hall and on saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m at the flagpole for free workshops tickets are available at the u.c desk and in the
