states does not show up nearly on a year-to-year basis as does the lehigh university forum claimed university president w deming lewis last monday night at the forum hi spring convocation he went on to say you are the shining embodiment of the principle that reasonable people do not have to agree upon everything to solve their differences provided they can agree upon a reasonable method for solving those differences so please don't assume that when differ ences are occasionally expressed by the administration that we are doubting the value of the forum's existence professor curtis w clump chairman of the forum began the ceremony with a brief speech in which he cited some of the achievements of forum i and 11 he spoke of the present work being done by the academic affairs committee studying the possible extension of the pass-fail option to the foreign language requirement and the elimination of 4:00 quizes dr lewis also pointed out one short coming of the forum during his speech this is in the understanding of what is policy and what is administration and what is the proper boundary between the role of the forum and the adminis tration in those areas where the forum has the right to legislate or advise or be consulted the line between these two roles is not clearly defined dr lewis then discussed plans for the future these included the eventual increase of the undergraduate enrollment to 4,000 and an increase in full-time graduate students he also indicated that the university will be more involved in advanced graduate study in research levels he also mentioned that the board of trustees had set up a criteria for any new schools that are to be established at lehigh these criteria include financial stability a pressing need for the school national character and maintenance of lehigh's high academic tradition in a report by professor robert h mills chairman of the elections com mittee on the recent election of forum ik members the professor said i really personally think that some very serious thought be given to the size of the forum i anticipate a problem next spring unless this problem is resolved mills reported that only 16 candidates signed up to run for 17 student positions in the college of engineering he said that a similar problem also existed in the faculty and graduate student elections the last address was given by outgoing forum vice chairman john fields who spoke on the importance of a bona fide interest in forum affairs after a brief discussion on miscellan eous subjects the 82 new members of forum in were installed at the con vocation they will join the 43 holdovers at the may 8 meeting of the forum kathleen kennedy daughter of the late sen robert f kennedy of fers her support for sen george mcgovern during his coming from behind it you may be right the room that was the book store before it moved to maginnes hall is now the neville room according to dean of student life william quay it is a room that will stress cultural things ideas for what to do with the room when it became vacant came from a student advisory committee three years ago proposals for a casino room offices or a " 24-hour crash-pad type room were turned down said quay in favor of a room that would lend itself to various uses the room is named for harvey a neville president emeritus of the univer sity dr neville was president pro ceeding w deming lewis as of now there is a piano in the neville room in addition to couches chairs and two stages for student use an organ there belongs to bill alexander 72 more chairs have yet to arrive quay estimated that the completed room will cost 10,000 although it is late in the semester to plan events for the neville room quay said that program planning is underway for next year some of the tentative plans include a weekly faculty-student discussion live music and guest speakers it will not be used for business meetings he added as there are many other places to hold such meetings i think it is going to get heavy use by the students said quay since the room was opened a short time ago students have been making good use of it whether for relaxing or studying he added any student the lehigh valley in his primary campaign sweep through southeastern pennsylvania on monday he arrived at 6 p.m to greet 1,600 cheering backers at the allentown-bethlehem-easton air port with the promise that his first move as president will be to end the war and briag the boys home mcgovern made a short speech citing the areas of his major concern unemploy ment conversion to a peacetime economy and ecology senator edmund muskie also brought his campaign to bethlehem speaking at catholic sokol hall on bethlehem's south side on sunday april 23 he arrived there at 2:30 p.m an hour behind schedule the senator from maine spoke for 20 minutes to a crowd of about 600 attacking president nixon's price and wage control policies he said nixon deserves to be the first incumbent president since hoover to be unemployed muskie stated that present wage and price controls hurt the little man but not the big corporations he said if elected he will freeze food prices he pointed out that while property taxes are soaring eight large companies that netted a total of 650 million paid no income taxes he said americans are protesting these things and i say they have every right pass-fail language proposal debated three year b.a program considered a motion allowing arts students to take their language requirement pass-fail was tabled until next semester at the final meeting of the academic affairs committee tuesday the committee met to wrap up this semester's work and prepare for next semester advanced placement and 4 o'clock quizzes were discussed ed dzenis 74 detailed a report he is making on advanced placement and the foreign language department students are required to have two years of a foreign language to be admitted dzenis explained advanced placement is the perogative of the department and foreign language departments give placement but nocredit he said this year all departments determined placement with a standardized test but next year the german and spanish departments plan to use the number of years spent studying a language in high school to decide placement dzenis said it was felt that students were purposely doing poorly on the tests to have an easy freshman year dr eric ottervik vice-provost said princeton was starting a 3-year b.a program because so many students were entering with advanced placement he suggested that a program using advanced placement as a means of financial aid be investigated it was decided that a resolution on advanced placement be made when the ' report is completed next semester ways of replacing 4 o'clock
