brown and white vol 84 — no 8 bethlehem pa tuesday september 26 1972 866-0 i dance marathon closes after grueling 46 hours by david newman they shoot horses don't they the dance marathon was not like the movie nor was it as big an event as originally planned yet it served to help restore books from the wilkes and kings cojlege libraries that were lost during the floods last june pete jones a graduate student from lehigh and barbara keusch from cedar crest danced their way to victory and 100 gift certificates after 46 hours of dancing they were declared the winners when they heard the judges announcement they began to dance again the marathon was sponsored by h.b sigal the owner of a local clothing store the contest was similar to dance marathons in the 1930's and 40's each couple had a sponsor who would pay a certain amount of money an hour as long as the couple remained dancing there were not as many couples or sponsors as expected starting friday night the marathon was a 46-hour test of endurance which ended sunday night except for the two-hour sleep break and the various other stops the dancers had to remain moving food was provided but contestants had to eat while dancing at 8 o'clock the lehigh marching 97 began the marathon with a medley of modern tunes and old-time marathon songs the honored guests mayor and mrs payrow mr and mrs mario andretti and mr and mrs h.b jsigal then started to dance the dancers came onto the floor and the contest began the mayor thought that the idea of a marathon was great he remarked that the marathon had more spirit than those of the 40's b&w photo by owl the dance marathon winners pete jones and barb keusch laugh it up after their victory once they were declared winners they started dancing again ifc seeks more contact with other living groups by frank weinperl jr the inter fraternity council ifc this year plans to strive for better relations with the residence hall living groups and to increase the number of its sponsored social events according to ifc president robert moe moe said that as an example of better relations the council is considering inviting coeds to the houses for dinner this is to eliminate some of the selectivity the fraternities exhibit in their house invitations he said the council is also planning some type of social event open to everyone that may coincide with a campus concert this fall moe said greek week was the only ifc-sponsored social event last year the ifc will sponsor a tea in the osbourne room for freshman parents weekend in coordination with the residence halls moe mentioned that the rushing program is going very well and that the ifc is happy with the current program of open rush from october to november he said that all the fraternity houses are almost filled and that there has been a record number of pledges moe cautioned that this year we ifc will enforce the regulations as far as we have to mentioning that dirty rushing will not be allowed other ifc projects include the creation of a model pledge program in which pledging rules would be altered a tutoring program among fraternity brothers and students needing help in a particular subject and coordination between fraternities and the concert committee since the fraternities make up a large part of the lehigh population moe said the ifc is working for the betterment of lehigh as well as the fraternities gym facelift is going well reports quay lehigh's athletic and convocation center the renovation of taylor gym and athletic scholarships were discussed at the first meeting of the student affairs committee's subcommittee on athletics william quay dean of student life reported to the subcommittee about the planning of the saucon valley complex he said there would be two buildings rather than one so that athletic activities could coincide with other activities that might be taking place he also explained that there was not enough money to provide a swimming pool in the new structures the question of a second swimming pool was also discussed when the subcom mittee turned to the taylor gym renovations the university expects to begin using the second pool in taylor gym which has not been in use in recent years other renovations including an improve ment of the heating and ventilation system were reported going well completion of these improvements are expected by next summer athletic scholarships were also discuss ed it was suggested that lehigh might have to provide athletes with scholarships greater than they need this would attract a high calibre athlete and could make anti-war activist jane fonda to lecture at lehigh thursday jane fonda will speak at lehigh on thursday sept 28 in packard lab auditorium she will present a lecture at 4:45 here after meeting steelworkers at bethlehem steel earlier thursday she will give a private press conference at cedar crest college for women in communications field after the 11:30 conference she will attend a luncheon sponsored by the cedar crest political club and the youth committed to peace club miss fonda will hold a press conference for college reporters at 1 : 30 when she will also tape speak out jane fonda meets the college press at channel 39 at 8 p.m she will appear with folksinger holly near at muhlenburg college ms fonda actress and anti-war activist spent two weeks last july interviewing prisoners of war and viewing sites of alleged dike bombings by u.s planes in north vietnam her christmas was spent on a tour outside u.s military installations presenting alternative entertainment upon her return from the north vietnam tour she held a news conference in new york in which she presented a 20-minute film of her visit the film purports to show several bomb craters in dikes near nam sach 40 miles southeast of hanoi and also damage near the provincial capitol of nam dinh i believe in my heart profoundly that the dikes are being bombed on purpose she said not only the dikes are being bombed but hydraulic systems sluice gates pumping stations and dams as well most of the christmas season miss fonda traveled with a troupe which called itself fta the show played for five weeks it started outside fort dix n.j and played near but never on bases in hawaii the philippines okinawa and finally japan * fta which has been reported to stand for anything from free the army n.y times to even f-k the army time was in co-star donald sutherland's words " — a political vaudeville created out of materials found in gi newspapers skits included miss fonda singing a few lines and cavorting as pat nixon sutherland doing a battle sportscast from the front lines of vietnam sutherland also played a television adviser who hard-sells nixon played by comedian michael alaimo on how to brighten up his press conferences with vaudeville bits toot a horn slap a rubber chicken on your head mel gussow ended his review of the show for the new york times saying the next stop for fta will be southeast asia where unquestionably it will offer the troops alternative christmas enter tainment gussow referred to entertainment provided by groups like veteran troop entertainer bob hope's annual christmas show in fact the two troupes crisscrossed each other's routes occasionally there were plenty of contrasts between hope's show and the fonda-sutherland revue while hope had glossy production numbers les brown's band and a succession of sexy starlets fta offered makeshift props a small combo and physical charms e.g miss fonda's 36-21-35 hidden under jeans and baggy sweaters hope
