failure industrial engineering has been listed by the faculty committee on deferment as preparing for an essential type of work in indus try the committee will include students preparing for professional careers in that curriculum in its recommendation for classification in class 2a in the deferment list dean wray h congdon who released the report of the commit tee said that the letter recently sent to students eligible for induc tion by the national selective ser vice act did not include students enrolled in the industrial engin eering curriculum the committee on deferment felt asked this re porter today the question was prompted by the recent discovery of the loss of two volumes from the university library reading room the two books which have been taken by some person are volume ii of the encyclopedia britannica and volume ii of the americana encyclopedia president williams pointed out the fact that lehigh is one of the few universities in the united states which permits every student to use the stacks in its library at will it is a distinctive privilege which every student should appre ciate williams said the fre quency of students working on re search papers who are unable to find needed books is becoming alarming two methods of forcing students to have their books checked by a 3 other army fliers also perish in collision frank b ralston i e 39 was one of four army fliers killed yes terday when two a-20 light bomb ers collided near rains s c many students on the campus remember an army plane that cir cled the university several times at 11:15 a m sunday march 16 and finally dropped a message for the phi gamma delta house the pilot of the plane was frank ral ston who announced that he would be down for houseparty a formation of six ships being transferred from savannah ga to langley field va were flying in formation when two bombers col lided the wing of one ship was torn off and the plane plummeted to the ground the second ship crashed about a mile away two of the other bombers flew on to langley field and the other two returned to savannah the men who were killed were second lieut ralston pittsburgh second lieut allen j moore reno nev sergeant david l boyd frost texas and corporal herbert o pruett collinsville miss lieut moore attempted to bail out but his parachute opened too late and he was fatally injured the other three fliers were mangl ed and burned in the wreckage of both planes ralston a member of phi gam ma delta graduated from peabody high school pittsburgh while at lehigh he won his numerals in track and his varsity letter for two successive years he was on the swimming team in his junior and senior years and was a member of scabbard and blade honorary military society twenty eight seniors have subscribed to the class gift plan of endowment insurance since last tuesday this brings the total number of policies sold to members of the class of 41 to 128 according to charles k zug 26 the goal set by the class gift committee of 150 subscribers can be reached if like interest is shown during the two weeks remaining until graduation any seniors who are not in contact with a member of the class committee may subscribe to the plan at the drown hall arcadia office or at the supply bureau librarian are available according to williams one is to eliminate the present privilege of freedom of the stacks we don't like to prohibit men from using the stacks the president of lehigh emphatically declared but some drastic measures must be taken williams has been considering erecting a fence-like structure in front of the main desk in the li brary which would force all users of the library to have their books checked and stamped before leav ing the building while illustrating how seriously other colleges feel about the steal ing of books the president noted that swarthmore imposes a fine of 50 for the first offense and for a repetition immediate dismissal from the college is the penalty any further suggestions by the lehigh student body with regard to a method for controlling the loss of books will be welcomed some thing has to be done to cure this vandalism williams concluded tom girdler 01 served between 12:30 and 2 p m at the armory and drown hall the parade of the classes will begin at 2:30 p m ending in class day exercises all classes whose years end in one or six are holding official reunions this year while all other classes are being invited to return for informal affairs es pecially honored will be the class of 91 which marks its 50th anni versary this year men who have passed this milestone will join the 50-year plus club in reunion by carl creidenberg what can be done about the unauthorized borrowing of books from the library president cle ment c williams asked this re porter today the question was prompted by the recent discovery of the loss of two volumes from the university library reading room the two books which have been taken by some person are volume ii of the encyclopedia britannica and volume ii of the americana encyclopedia president williams pointed out the fact that lehigh is one of the few universities in the united states which permits every student to use the stacks in its library at will it is a distinctive privilege which every student should appre ciate williams said the fre quency of students working on re search papers who are unable to find needed books is becoming alarming two methods of forcing students to have their books checked by a 3 other army fliers also perish in collision frank b ralston i e 39 was one of four army fliers killed yes terday when two a-20 light bomb ers collided near rains s c many students on the campus remember an army plane that cir cled the university several times at 11:15 a m sunday march 16 and finally dropped a message for the phi gamma delta house the pilot of the plane was frank ral ston who announced that he would be down for houseparty a formation of six ships being transferred from savannah ga to langley field va were flying in formation when two bombers col lided the wing of one ship was torn off and the plane plummeted to the ground the second ship crashed about a mile away two of the other bombers flew on to langley field and the other two returned to savannah the men who were killed were second lieut ralston pittsburgh second lieut allen j moore reno nev sergeant david l boyd frost texas and corporal herbert o pruett collinsville miss lieut moore attempted to bail out but his parachute opened too late and he was fatally injured the other three fliers were mangl ed and burned in the wreckage of both planes ralston a member of phi gam ma delta graduated from peabody high school pittsburgh while at lehigh he won his numerals in track and his varsity letter for two successive years he was on the swimming team in his junior and senior years and was a member of scabbard and blade honorary military society twenty eight seniors have subscribed to the class gift plan of endowment insurance since last tuesday this brings the total number of policies sold to members of the class of 41 to 128 according to charles k zug 26 the goal set by the class gift committee of 150 subscribers can be reached if like interest is shown during the two weeks remaining until graduation any seniors who are not in contact with a member of the class committee may subscribe to the plan at the drown hall arcadia office or at the supply bureau librarian are available according to williams one is to eliminate the present privilege of freedom of the stacks we don't like to prohibit men from using the stacks the president of lehigh emphatically declared but some drastic measures must be taken williams has been considering erecting a fence-like structure in front of the main desk in the li brary which would force all users of the library to have their books checked and stamped before leav ing the building while illustrating how seriously other colleges feel about the steal ing of books the president noted that swarthmore imposes a fine of 50 for the first offense and for a repetition immediate dismissal from the college is the penalty any further suggestions by the lehigh student body with regard to a method for controlling the loss of books will be welcomed some thing has to be done to cure this vandalism williams concluded tom girdler 01
