bethlehem-allentown area this week ln support of presidential candidate george mcgovern ms fonda who ls suffering from an acute case of laryngitis held a press conference yesterday for college report ers at 1:30 p.m at channel 39 because of her illness tom hayden one of the chicago seven defendants substituted for miss fonda hayden fielded questions from the re porters on miss fonda's behalf while she sat in the audience we feel mr mcgovern's position is correct to end the war and return the pow's he said hayden also stated the goals of their peace campaign which are to expose the false claim that the war is winding down to support the right to self determination of the people of indochina to increase resistance to the war to defeat the nixon strategy and to expand theanti-war move ment hayden emphasized the death and des truction that the american war machine has caused in vietnam and then defended that the charge of treason which had been leveled against miss fonda since her trip to hanoi at one point hayden said the people in the united states do not know the viet namese people why even american gl's have said the vietnamese are not our enemies as if in reply one member of the audience stood and identified himself as a vietnam veteran he said that he was a green beret and witnessed many inno cent civilians being murdered and many others tortured ms fonda's visit to the lehigh valley is part of the indochina peace campaign earlier in the day ms fonda visited cedar crest college mama cass elliot formerly of the mams and the papas addressed about 200 students at northampton county area community college wednesday in support of mcgovern she said that president nixon has given the american public only lies and deceit . he hasn't done any thing during his four years in office ms elliot also pointed out it is crim inal and un-american to fail to register and vote we owe it to our children not to have to apologize to them for the way the country is being run mcgovern rhc proposes new guidelines social dues in dorms assoiled by martin baron john b kitto president of the residence halls council suggested the university offer a variety of life styles before a residence subcommittee open hearing on social dues wednesday nearly 30 people attended the hearing which focused on the growing concern over the enforcement of social dues dean parr university vice-president in charge of student affairs had said that the uni versity will not enforce the payment of dues since they would violate the penn sylvania liquor and penal codes dues invariably go to the purchase of alcohol for students under 21 kitto read five points from an rhc proposal which would move the university toward a " new selection system and placement process 1 rhc will publish a brief summary characterizing each residence hall and would provide information on " which might better inform freshman and other students about the range of life styles and the life and obligations in the lehigh residence hall system 2 at the time residence hall preference forms are made available a questionnaire will be supplied asking a student's social preferences 3 students will indicate on residence halls contract forms whether they are will ing or not to pay social dues 4 residence halls offices will match both a student's interests and willingness to pay social dues in the placement of students for the next academic year 5 lehigh policy will be to offer a variety of residence life styles the proposal states that the problem which has emerged is how to develop a system which places the student where he wishes to go and also where he best fits into the particular life style it was pointed out that a pledge to pay social dues would be considered binding should an individual refuse to pay he would be transferred to another house of sim ilar quality the next year bob hoerner 73 non-forum subcom mittee member noted that since students would merely be transferred rather than being forced to pay dues the legal ques tion would be bypassed dave busaca a graduate student re called that the forum had previously decided that residents of a particular hall have priority on living there the following year he said this decision would conflict with the proposed transfer of students bill jesse liaison with the adminis tration agreed and said that this would call for a complete revision in our current priorities thomas joachin 75 expressed outrage that the university is ignoring the viola tion of the law on campus what the hell is wrong with enforcing the law he must be two buildings according to the administration programming committee new all-u complex undergoes review by andrea siegel in order to accomplish everything we want we need two buildings or one large one with two segments said dean of student life william quay regarding the athletic and convocation center to be built in saucon valley the decision quay said was reached over the summer by jerome barney member of the trustee planning and development committee william leckonby director of athletics kirk pendleton trustee university planner h jorris rosse and quay they comprise the programming committee which visited the athletic complexes of a dozen colleges and universities including princeton west chester state and the u.s air force academy we want a facility that will take care of public events intercollegiate sports and practice needs and intramural activities said quay we discovered that no single building could perform all three functions where they are being performed well the school had two buildings or one large building divided into two segments quay continued this way he explained several activities could take place simultaneously notre dame's facilities impressed us more than any quay said from an aerial view that school's complex can be seen as two circular domes with a rectangular block between them quay said that the programming committee would like the public events area to have 6,000 permanent seats it would take care of convocations major athletic spectator sports popular music concerts and the like it would be separate from the sports and recreation areas which would include an indoor track better wrestling facilities indoor tennis courts and indoor practice areas for outdoor sports such as football and baseball space for indoor intramural sports would be provided in the recreation area which would have a large floor space the new structure would not include a swimming pool or a skating rink because of lack of funds a semi enclosed outdoor link is being considered by the programming committee plans for bus service to the complex have not been worked out yet a detailed program will be submitted by the committee to president w deming lewis in mid-november if approved the program will be sent to the planning and u donates 500 to state fund after oil spill by jeff brindle a meeting between university and pennsylvania environmental protection officials last friday over the seepage of a large quantity of oil from the campus power plant has resulted in the uni versity agreeing to donate 500 to the state's clean water fund the university has also agreed to apply to the environmental protection agency for an effluent discharge permit and submit a timetable for the neutralization of thermal
