lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa friday october «. 1t72 tuo-omi vol 84 — no 11 12 state students seek injunction against drinking age enforcement it's inconsistent for 18 to 20-year-olds to be given many of the privileges of an adult and not be truly treated as an adult said charles koslosky 20 a junior at muhlenberg college koslosky and 11 other pennsylvania students have filed suit in u.s district court for southeastern pennsylvania seeking an injunction against the enforce ment of the legal drinking age defendants named in the class action are edwin winner chairman of the state liquor control board and joseph o,neil philadelphia police commissioner koslosky explained that although penn sylvania has passed a law allowing 18-20 year-olds to be teachers and firemen to sign contracts and get married without parental permission it does not allow these same people to consume alcoholic beverages koslosky said that this violates the 14th amendment to the constitution the idea to initiate a class action arose last july at the republican college council convention the convention primarily a leadership training seminar chose the 12 plaintiffs on the basis of their contacts within the legal profession and also for their public appearance and speaking ability the plaintiffs were also chosen from different backgrounds because the convention wanted the group to show diversity since it was a class action suit which represents all 18 to 20-year-olds koslosky said the suit is not in the name of the council or the convention koslosky explained funding for carrying out the suit must be raised by the plaintiffs a meeting is being held today between the group's lawyer joseph a prim jr of philadelphia and u.s district court judge edward becker to set a court date koslosky said that the meeting will also serve to demonstrate the seriousness oi the plaintiff's case to show that it is not just a prank koslosky said that new york west virginia and as of next jan 1 new jersey allow 18 to 20-year-olds to consume liquor koslosky mentioned the dangers which arise when 18 to 20-year-olds must drive a distance to consume alcohol legally driving across the border is much more dangerous than drinking in your own town he said the republican college council is also circulating a petition around muhlenberg soon to be around other colleges urging the legislature to recognize the liquor law problems and to rectify them koslosky said that response to the petitions has been very good when asked why he thought the state legislature had failed to include drinking rights as part of the age-lowering bill koslosky said i think it was too controversial for them at this time and remodelling is proposed dining areas considered renovation of the university center student dining rooms as proposed by the forum residence subcommittee in april is under the consideration of chandler-cudlipp interior decorators according to elmer w glick university of rathbone hall is not the reason we are requesting renovation in the uc although it has provided the most recent stimulus it has made what has been for some time an unpleasant but unavoidable situation more unpleasant the subcommittee passed the motion urging renovation on the basis that it conflicts with the residence guidelines which were passed for it clearly is not providing an equal standard of living throughout the residence system stated koplin the cort room was found by the committee to be noisy unattractive and hot in addition problems resulted at rathbone because students
