mcgovern mcgovern s visit to the lehigh valley comes 10 days after a bethlehem campaign appearance by his running mate r sargent shriver the bethlehem appearance is part of a campaign swing through eastern pennsylvania mcgovern state campaign leaders have released figures they compiled showing democratic voter registration in the state leading republican registration by more than 3000,000 voters following an hour-long stop in bethle hem the mcgovern entourage will visit the scranton-wilkes-barre area george mcgovern the junior senator from south dakota made a campaign appearance in the lehigh valley last april while campaigning for the pennsylvania primary born july 19 1922 the son of a wesleyan methodist minister in avon south dakota mcgovern attended dakota wesleyan university where he earned his bachelor's degree and where he later taught political science he continued his education at northwestern university where he earned his doctorate in history during world war 11 mcgovern was awarded the distinguished flying cross he flew 35 missions over europe from bases in italy and north africa at age 30 mcgovern became the first salaried organizer of the almost non existent democratic party in south dakota three years later he was elected to congress where he served two terms in 1960 president john f kennedy appointed him the director of the food for peace program from this post mcgovern initiated the modern american b&w photo by owl sen george mcgovern quay cautions on non-students drinking at u the problem of underage drinking by townspeople at lehigh living group parties has been aggravated recently by complaints to a state agency by parents of high school student being illegally served alcoholic beverages in a letter to the presidents of all living groups william quay dean of student life warned that the problem was a serious matter and can result in the prosecution of living group officers and members dean quay commented in an interview that if the state officials chose to come on campus they would not notify the administration before hand according to dean quay precautions trustees to bridge gap in relations with students a plan to sensitize the university trustees to student life was tested for the first time at the trustee meetings on campus last week the basic idea of student-trustee interaction began when the forum was formed one of the forum's main purposes was to bridge the gap between students and trustees the first events of the program instituted by the forum representatives to the board of trustees were a series of pub nights attended by trustees and students last thursday night trustees visited sigma chi theta xi and the town house a pub night was held friday at m&m with about five trustees attending the program was conducted by hal koplin 72 one of the forum representa tives koplin said the biggest problem remaining is the lack of a coordinating mechanism the forum is attempting to deal with this problem through its trustee representative plans are being made for the next trustee meeting in april living units are being contacted in an attempt to schedule events in advance to enable increased trustee participation another type of program is being planned in which a trustee can lecture to classes in his vocational field of expertise this activity is being coordinated by the b * w photo by jack purse hal koplin club of rome model is pessimistic by j michael clinch schiesser talks on future prof william e schiesser of the com puting center discussed the club of rome model a mathematical prediction of life in the future at the first meeting of the economics department symposium the model is a computer program used to predict factors such as population growth economic expansion pollution levels and depletion of natural resources as mathematical functions of each other a group of businessmen known as the club of rome originally financed a study done by prof jay w forrester of massachusetts institute of technology who published his findings in the book world dynamics subsequently his associate prof dennis l meadows who is now at dartmouth expanded the program and wrote a book is there a limit to growth both programs analyzed five factors population growth economic growth pollution quality of life and use of natural resources both derived complex functions for each variable and plotted the results schiesser called the results catastro phic forrester's graphs showed that popula tion economic growth and pollution will peak at several times their present rate in the early decades of the twenty-first century couples with disastrous de creases in the amounts of natural resources forrester predicted a sharp decline in the world population and the quality of life meadows graph showd that even if the use of natural resources is curtailed pollution would eventually reduce the population to about one-fifth the present level both researchers concluded that the underlying cause of this collapse will be industrialization rather than population they predicted a four pronged dilemma suppression of modern industrial society by a shortage of natural resources ; decline of world population from changes wrought by pollution population limitation by food shortages or population collapse from war disease and social stress caused by physical and psychological crowding forrester and meadows predicted that population control alone will not solve problems but only postpone them they reported that the only way to halt a massive social catastrophe or at least to minimize its effect is to control popula tion and economic growth as well as to halt pollution within the next 20 years however they predicted massive social problems when under developed nations realize that they cannot approach the standard of living of the industrial nations in general they concluded that the earth is finite and cannot support unlimited unionization of u faculty undesirable says conard by andrea siegel the effort to unionize college faculty members may be a nationwide epidemic but is has not reached this university yet according to george conard 11 chairman of metallurgy and materials science and president of lehigh's chapter of the american association of university professors aaup conard added that he does not want it to reach lehigh two major groups are seeking to unionize college faculty with collective bargaining in mind the national educational association nea represents faculties on 182 campuses the american federation of teachers aft which is part of afl-cio has unionized 73 campuses the aaup which is the group on this campus is not a union but an association whose major interests are academic rights for faculty members including graduate students until last spring the aaup was in no way a union said conard at a national meeting last may where 438 aaup chapters were represented the national aaup voted to encourage unionization in order to compete with the other groups for membership so far the aaup has been unionized at 13 colleges and one community college having become the collective bargaining agent for the faculty the lehigh
