rivals first contest in 1884 ez bowen lehigh alumnus and lafayette professor to speak at pep-fest lehigh eleven awaits clash with determined spirit record of past lehigh lafayette games shows lehigh victor in 6 gut of 8 since 1912 opposing squads in pink of condition keady and sutherland to match wits in big fight lehigh eastonians have registered four victories and suffered three defeats thus far lehigh victors five times two ties one defeat lafayette although the lafayette football team has not won as many games as lehigh this year the sentiment around easton is that all the lafa yette team meed do is to beat the brown and white tomorrow and their season will be a success dur ing the season lafayette has played one less game than lehigh and has been unfortunate in losing three games they marked up four vic tories the three defeats suffered by lafayette were not all adminis tered by the hardest teams as penrusylvamia can not be considered as an extremely hard team an napolis defeated the maroon and white by a 12-7 score and the oth er defeat was handed out by the pittsburgh eleven the navy and pitt teams are very good ones and although lafayette put up a good fight against them they were forc ed to give away to the better team there was no shame in the defeats by these two teams and the penn sylvania game should really have been either a draw or a victory for the eastonians lafayette opened the season one week later than lehigh by engaging in a hard battle with muhlenberg the little eleven from allentown put up an excellent game and threatened the maroon and white on a number of occasions al though the score was 20-0 it does not indicate how little better lafa yette was than muhlenberg in the opening game fo the season muh lenberg played a strong game teams since football re flations were established between these rivals in 1884 in only one year 1896 was no game played previous to 1902 as many as three games were played in one year and in those earlier years lafayette was the most fortunate running up a big string of victories however lehigh is gradually closing the gap and while the count still favors lafayette the margin is very small in the fifty-three games played lafayette has won 27 and lehigh 24 two games ending in 6-6 ties lehigh's greatest run of victories has occurred since tom keady assumed the coaching role in 1912 lehigh winning six games and lafayette two lafayette has scored a total of 816 points against lehigh's 442 but the 1917 brown and white eleven scored the larg est number of points in one game when they crushed lafayette 78-0 the scores are listed as follows : rival bands will play tomorrow lime weighing an average of some ten pounds per man more than le high while in the backfield the brown and white will probably be outweighed close to 20 pounds per man brennan the lafayette quar terback is one of the heaviest men on the team ; seasholtz is also heavy while the halfbacks lehecka and gazella are fast fairly heavy men while gazella has quite a reputation as an open field runner lehigh will probably not have as much trouble watching him as they did way and haines against state the lafayette team should be in fairly good shape for the conflict as the varsity has not been in a game for two weeks the team which pfeyed against villanova last week was made up principally of substitutes while the regular players were scouting at lehigh as a matter of fact both teams have been thoroughly looked over by their opponents lehigh is considered by her sup porters as a favorite to win for although outweighed the team is expected to show a fighting spirit and punch that wfll be hard to stop the advance sale of tickets for the game indicates an interest in the event greater than ever before temporary wooden stands have raised the capacity of march field to 12,000 but at the beginning of the week practically all available tickets had been sold and a tre mendous demand for seats will have remaining five contests this is a very good record for any team and considering that lehigh is rat ed as a small college and that she has met a number of new and stronger opponents the lehigh followers can call it a successful season thus far o n lehigh's schedule this year are four new op ponents and it was to one of these opponents that she was forced to bow this opponent was the washington and jefferson team which carried off a victory by a 14 to 0 score although lehigh's play img was om a par with that of the presidents the other three team which are new on the schedule were lebanon valley rochester and west virginia lehigh had very little trouble with the first two of these enemies but there was quite a struggle at morgantown in the second game of the season when the brown and white warriors bat tled to a draw with the west vir ginia eleven 7-7 lehigh started the season on sep tember 25 by taking an easy victory from lebanon valley by the score of 28-0 coach keady refused to run up a high score ow the little team and after lehigh had taken a small lead started to insert substi tutes before the second half had gotten well under way the team was composed of second string men who performed against the annville team almost as well as the first team continued on page three the second team for the lehigh battlers to meet was west virginia after the long trip to this state the brown and white team fought their opponents to a standstill forc ing them to end the game in a dead lock 7-7 the work of the lehigh line mi this game was excellent the forwards holding the big virginia soccer note there will be mo soccer • game this saturday but the formidable pennsylvania team will invade bethlehem on saturday nov 27th this will be the second collegiate contest of the season and will fore tell in some degree the chances of becoming champion of the inter collegiate league as this game will probably be the hardest of the season the team is endeavoring to get in the best shape as possible by then owing to the weather conditions there was only one practice in the beginning of the week while the two teams clash in deadly combat on march field tomorrow there will be going on from opposite sides of the field a clash between the two college bands lafayette due to her suc cess in former years has been cred ited by some of the eastern news papers as having the best college band so while the team is put ting forth every effort to bring home the gridiron honors the band is also putting forth its best efforts to bring the musical honors dur ing the week they have been prac ticing hard with new music and they are determined that the news paper scribes shall give them the credit that they so much merit last week the last supply of new sweaters arrived there is a debt of 154.50 to be paid on the sweat ers , and from the student body 134 was collected this is a very small amount for a student body of 1000 so if you have not subscribed yet ycu still have an opportunity to do so in preparation for the lafayette game the lehigh management has succeeded in chartering a special train on the lehigh valley rail road every student should feel obliged to go by this train as it was secured on the assumption that the entire student body would use it this train will leave the union de pot at 12 : 50 p m upon reaching easton the stud enit body headed by the band will march to the field as there is some speculation as to where the lehigh cheerimg sec tion is at march field manager conell announces that it includes sections 1 2 and 3 extending from the 15 yard line to the 35 yard line tomorrow afternoon lehigh plays the most important game on the schedule the annual contest with lafayette the game this year will be played oni march field in easton and will be called promptly at 2 00 o'clock starting the season with material which appeared only medium good and was considerably below that of last year lehigh has been coming along steadily and the team at present stacks up as one of the best of recent years while light the team is very strong defensively and none of the powerful oppon ents which lehigh has met so far this year have been able to gain consistently on the browif and white the line although out weighed in all the important games has never been outplayed to any ex tent the offense in the earlier games was somewhat behind the defense but the coaches have been steadily at work on the attack and last sat urday's game proved the team's ability to gain against one of the strongest teams in the country much attention has been paid by the coaches to the forward passing game and the two perfect passes which scored ' lehigh's touchdown against state show the extent to which it has been developed it was noteworthy last week that although playimg against an un usually stromg opponent the team used little besides regulation foot ball a forward pass an end run were all that were tried altho one or two trick plays were attempted this can only mean that saturday's game should uncover an attack which will surprise our opponents down the river as lehigh's fast light backfield is one which excels in the open style of play the entire team came through saturday's game in excellent condi tion only a few minor injuries be ing received and coach keady will be able to draw on the full strength of the squad for the game the morale of the team has never been better and the men elated by their showing saturday are going at the practice this week with fine spirit the team will probably be taken out of town today and tomorrow in order to put in the final training away from any disturbing influ ence the men will not arrive in easton until shortly before the game lafayette this year is said to have a fairly strong team although it was perhaps a little overrated at the beginning of the year playing a schedule which cannot be rated any harder than lehigh's lafa yette has lost three games losing to
